Bridge repair on Nall, I-435 in Johnson County to begin Monday
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Drivers will have to use a detour in Johnson County on I-435 starting on Monday, June 2. A Kansas Department of Transportation bridge repair project on the Nall Avenue over the eastbound I-435 bridge is set to begin tomorrow. During construction, the following routes will be altered: Eastbound I-435, Metcalf Avenue to Antioch Road, double lane closure. Eastbound I-435 to Nall Avenue exit ramp fully closed. Eastbound I-435 to Roe Avenue exit ramp fully closed. Metcalf Avenue to eastbound I-435 traffic will not have access to enter I-435 mainline lanes using the Metcalf Avenue entrance ramp. Traffic will be directed to the auxiliary lane and continue east to merge with eastbound I-435 mainline lanes at the Roe Avenue entrance This will be the following detour: Eastbound I-435/Nall Avenue and eastbound I-435/Roe Avenue exit ramp traffic: Continue on eastbound I-435 to use the State Line Road exit ramp, then turn left and travel north on State Line Road. Turn left to use the westbound I-435 entrance ramp and travel west to exit at Roe Avenue or Nall Avenue. The Department of Natural Resources is responding to the bear sighting as police help with traffic control. Waverley Road between Craigburn Drive and Twilight Lane is closed to the public. Mirror appears at 'tricky' Nottingham pedestrian crossing
A mystery mirror has been attached to a lamppost at a busy pedestrian crossing in Nottingham. The mirror has appeared on the crossing at the junction of Lady Bay Bridge and Meadow Lane, but it is not known who added the mirror in what seems to be an attempt to improve safety for those crossing the road on local resident said he was "not surprised" that someone took it upon themselves to add the mirror, as he "takes his life into his own hands" every time he uses the crossing.A spokesperson from Nottingham City Council said it was trying to secure funding for improvements there and experts have warned against vigilante traffic control. Caitlin Taylor, road safety manager at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said "improving road safety is vital" but changes to road infrastructure should be made through "the proper channels"."Well-meaning interventions by individuals can unintentionally create new risks," she Taylor said it was the local highways authority's job to determine safety measures and prioritise which areas were most in need of said: "RoSPA encourages anyone with safety concerns to report them directly to their local council so that expert assessments can guide the right solutions." Bernard Jarvis, 80, who volunteers as a guide for blind people, said: "You can't really see what's coming round the corner in time."You have to take your life into your own hands."It's noisy, it's polluted, and if you're on a bike it's terrifying," he said. George, a student who did not wish to give his surname, said he regularly used the crossing to go to the added that the crossing was "tricky" because "you can't really see when the cars are coming".The 21-year-old said there should be more measures put in place to make the crossing safer for pedestrians, such as "a green light to tell you when to cross the road".But he said he generally felt safe from traffic walking around Nottingham.A city council spokesperson added: "We share the view that this junction is outdated and we have been working on options to improve the pedestrian crossing facilities. "We are currently looking to secure funding to help us make these changes."

Iowa DOT's ‘Highway Helper' program coming to Sioux City
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) will be bringing its 'Highway Helper' program to Sioux City. According to a release from the Iowa DOT, Sioux City will be joining the DOT's list of cities beginning on May 7. The goal of the Highway Helpers program is to keep traffic flowing smoothly at all times across the state of Iowa. The release states that the program does this by offering free service assists to drivers who experience a flat tire, need a jump start, or one of the many other sorts of roadside services someone may need. They also help remove debris from the road and aid first responders when traffic control is needed. Story continues below You can contact Highway Helpers via their non-emergency line at 712-279-6960. Highway Helpers will also be on patrol from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m. during the week. In Sioux City, they will be focused on patrolling Interstate 29, Highway 20, and Highway 75. Other cities in Iowa served by Highway Helpers include: Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, the Quad Cities, and the newly added Sioux City.
