Giants' Justin Verlander's brother downplays Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani's $240M distraction
Giants' Justin Verlander's brother downplays Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani's $240M distraction originally appeared on The Sporting News The Los Angeles Dodgers haven't been playing particularly well lately, including suffering a mid-week sweep at the hands of the Angels. In fact, the Dodgers lost every game they played against the Angels this season. During the series, former Angel Shohei Ohtani found himself on the wrong side of history. 'According to Baseball Almanac's tracker of every triple play in MLB history, it marked just the eighth the Angels have ever turned. As for the Dodgers, they have now fallen victim to 24 triple plays. There had never been a triple play in the 152 games between the Dodgers and Angels since the Freeway Series began in 1997,' SI's Sam Connon wrote. Off the field, Ohtani is facing growing distractions, including an ongoing lawsuit. 'A Hawaii real estate investor and broker are suing Shohei Ohtani, claiming the Los Angeles Dodgers star and his agent got them fired from a $240 million luxury housing development on the Big Island's coveted Hapuna Coast that they brought him in to endorse,' The Associated Press's Jimmy Golen wrote. 'According to the lawsuit filed in Hawaii Circuit Court on Friday, Ohtani's agent, Nez Balelo, increasingly demanded concessions from developer Kevin J. Hayes Sr. and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto before demanding that their business partner, Kingsbarn Realty Capital, drop them from the deal.' While the situation is unfolding off the field, MLB analyst and Justin Verlander's brother, Ben Verlander, has attempted to downplay its significance. 'In a since-deleted tweet, Verlander dismissed the $240 million legal fight by telling fans, 'Let's all remember to not just get mad because you see his name attached to something. If his name wasn't Shohei Ohtani we wouldn't even know about this,'' Alvin Garcia wrote. 'He added, 'Never seen so many people care about CIVIL lawsuits regarding real estate.'' Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Verlander has certainly minimized the seriousness of the ongoing situation, which could escalate quickly. The Dodgers have done well to keep the matter from becoming a clubhouse distraction. However, Verlander's public comments aren't a good look. Ohtani will continue to play, but if the lawsuit doesn't go well, Verlander's dismissive remarks may come back to haunt him for a long time.

Shohei Ohtani hits into triple play, slams homer in Dodgers' loss to Angels
Shohei Ohtani had an adventurous few innings in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Angels in Anaheim on Tuesday, Aug. 12. In the sixth inning, Ohtani hit into a triple play. Three innings later, Ohtani hit a go-ahead home run, his 43rd of the season. With Miguel Rojas on second base and Dalton Rushing on first, Ohtani hit a liner up the middle that shortstop Zach Neto snagged. Neto then forced out Rojas at second and threw to first base to catch Rushing scrambling back to the bag. The third triple play of the 2025 season was the Angels' first triple play since Aug. 18, 2023 and the eighth in franchise history. With the score tied at 5-5 entering the ninth inning, Ohtani led off the inning with a home run off of Angels closer (and former Dodger) Kenley Jansen. Ohtani has hit home runs in four consecutive games. The Dodgers called on Alex Vesia to close out the game, but a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Nolan Schanuel scored Luis Rengifo to tie up the game. The Angels held the Dodgers scoreless in the top of the 10th inning, and then won the game when Jo Adell's single scored the "ghost runner" Taylor Ward. Ohtani takes the mound Wednesday as the Dodgers will look to avoid a series sweep against the Angels. A three-game losing streak by the Dodgers has allowed the San Diego Padres to move into a first-place tie atop the NL West. Angels' Zach Neto snares Shohei Ohtani's liner to start incredible triple play
Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani lined into a triple play on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels. The game was tied at five in the top of the sixth inning when Ohtani hit one up the middle off of Angels pitcher Brock Burke. Angels shortstop Zach Neto was there to snap the ball out of the air, step on second base to get the baserunner who lagged off of second too far and threw to first baseman Nolan Schanuel, who tagged Dalton Rushing, to complete the triple play. Neto was credited with two putouts and an assist on the play. "I caught the ball, stepped on second, and as I was looking to first, I saw the guy kind of still puzzled at first, so I threw the ball over there hoping Nolan could make a play, and he did," Neto said. "I actually told Nolan that if he messed that one up — because that was the first (triple play) ever in my life — if he messed that up, we were going to have some words." It was the eighth triple play in the club's history, but only the second since 1997. The team last completed one in August 2023 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Neto said he's only seen triple plays completed on social media. "I've only seen it on YouTube and on TikTok and everything," he said. Ohtani did enact some revenge later in the game when he hit a go-ahead home run to put the Dodgers up 6-5 in the top of the ninth. However, the Angels pulled together in the bottom of the ninth with a Schanuel sacrifice fly to tie the game and Jo Addell's high-chopper in the 10th to give the team the win. The Angels won 7-6 and improved to 58-62 on the season. The Dodgers fell to 68-52 on the year and are now tied for first place in the National League West.

Shohei Ohtani lines into triple play then hits go-ahead HR as Dodgers try to hold off Padres in close NL West
Shohei Ohtani's bat both hurt and helped the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. In a tie game against the Los Angeles Angels, the Dodgers star lined into a triple play to wipe out a scoring opportunity in the sixth inning. The liner was perfectly placed for Angels shortstop Zach Neto to haul it in, stop on second base, then throw out Dalton Rushing at first base. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] It was the eighth triple play in Angels history. Ohtani was visibly stunned as the Angels ran off the field, while Rushing appeared to be in some pain after an awkward lunge, though he remained in the game. Per Statcast, the ball was 86.8 mph off Ohtani's bat and carried a .480 xBA (meaning a 48% chance at becoming a hit based off its exit velocity and launch angle). Theoretically, balls like the ones Ohtani hit have about a 50/50 chance at becoming a hit, which would have likely yielded a run for the Dodgers. Instead, Neto, a defensive standout at short, made one of the best plays of his career. The play was badly timed for the Dodgers, who entered Tuesday nursing a one-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West. They managed to erase a couple two-run deficits on their way to a 5-5 tie, but missed an opportunity to take the lead in extraordinary fashion. Ohtani found redemption in the ninth, though, clubbing a go-ahead homer against his former team, his 43rd long ball of the season. The Dodgers bullpen went on to falter again, though, as Alex Vesia allowed the Angels to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth and needed to escape a bases-loaded situation just to send the game to extra innings. It was already an eventful day for Ohtani, as it was widely reported in the morning that he and his agent Nez Balelo were sued over a Hawaiian real estate deal gone bad, in which Balelo allegedly clashed with the project's developers after Ohtani signed an endorsement deal in 2023.
