Popular holiday hotspot to launch £15 billion underground metro

Hundreds of thousands of Brits visit the beautiful holiday destination each year and it's set to receive a huge transport upgrade. Located in Indonesia, Bali will see a £15.1billion underground railway line built on the tropical island. At 18.3 miles long, construction of the Bali Urban Subway kicked off last year. Line One of the train line will connect Ngurah Rai International Airport to Cemagi, and is expected to be finished in 2028. Meanwhile, Line Two will connect Ngurah Rai International Airport to Nusa Dua and is thought to be completed by 2031. The other two lines will link Kuta Sentral Parkir to Sanur and Renon to Ubud, but feasibility assessments are reportedly still underway and construction dates are not yet confirmed. Each station of the new network is planned to feature a special theme, according to Bali Discovery. Kuta's theme is set to be focused around its roll as a a commercial centre. For Seminyak, the main focal point will be entertainment, while in Canggu/Berawa, the decor will centre around health and wellness. Cemagi/Munggu is planned to be focused on nature and will feature a botanical underground park as well as an impressive replica of a traditional village. When building works are completely, the subway system will reportedly belong to the Balinese community. Regulations are having to be considered, with buildings in the region not allowed to be built taller than a coconut tree. Mahendra Jaya, the acting governor of Bali, previously urged for local Balinese people to be considered in the process. According to Bali Discovery, he previously said: 'We can understand that investors are interested because the market is tourists, but the local Balinese people's tickets should not be expensive; the company must subsidise them for the Balinese people who ride the train.' The Sun reported that tourist tickets are set to cost between $35 and $40 a week. While to help improve infrastructure relating to signals and communication for the new build, an undersea fibre optic cable will reportedly be pulled from Singapore to the island. Earlier this month, Joshwa, a travel influencer who regularly posts about his journeys around the world on TikTok, posted a series of clips from his time in Bali. Known for its beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine and jaw-dropping landscapes, the island is often portrayed as a luxury location. However, though Joshwa praised the 'fabulous culture' and 'great hospitality', he noted there were other aspects, including how locals don't reap the same benefits as tourists. One of the content creator's videos showed decrepit buildings, abandoned beanbags along a beach and litter piled high.

A Family Feud Is Rocking One of the World's Richest Hotel Dynasties

SINGAPORE—The gala felt straight out of the movie 'Crazy Rich Asians.' In this tropical-island nation famously dense with millionaires, 600 guests gathered in September 2023 to fete one of Singapore's most prominent success stories: the property empire that owns the global Millennium hotel chain and the Biltmore Los Angeles. The politicians, business leaders and foreign envoys in attendance heaped praise on the company's octogenarian executive chairman, Kwek Leng Beng, who built a family fortune estimated at $11.5 billion and made deals with the likes of Donald Trump. Guests at the black-tie dinner savored abalone, bird's nest soup and lobster, while dancers and musicians performed on a stage.

Scarlett Johansson cuts a chic figure in a beige two-piece as she joins Jonathan Bailey and her Jurassic World Rebirth co-stars on The Julia Cunningham Show

Scarlett Johansson showed off her chic sense of style in a beige two-piece as she joined Jonathan Bailey and the rest of her Jurassic World Rebirth co-stars on The Julia Cunningham Show. The actress, 40, who stars as Zora Bennett in the upcoming science fiction movie, wore a buttoned up shirt and matching floor-length skirt. She finished her ensemble with with a pair of nude heels and accessorised with some silver jewellery. During the episode, which is set to air on Friday at 3pm, Jonathon cut a casual display as he wore a white jumper and blue jeans, teamed with a pair of beige Prada raffia mules, worth £770. They appeared alongside cast members David Iacono, Mahershala Ali, Luna Blaise, Manuel García-Rulfo and Rupert Friend on the SiriusXM show days before the movie's premiere on July 2. The second trailer for the upcoming flick begins with Johansson as researcher Zora Bennett as she warns the others as they head to the tropical island, the site of previous films. 'The theme park owners did experimental work,' she says. 'Leaving only the worst ones here.' She stars as skilled covert operations expert, who leads the team on a mission. For the top-secret mission, they must safely obtain and bring back the genetic material of the most dangerous and largest dinosaurs the world has ever seen, made even more ferocious after the previous Jurassic Park scientists experimented on them. The group are seen traveling by boat and arriving at the island, only to be first greeted by a bone-chilling roar in the distance, as they prepared to face off 'the worst of the worst dinosaurs left here,' as seen in text that flashes quickly across the screen. 'We've put ourselves in a place where we don't belong,' Bailey as Dr. Henry Loomis even says to her at one point. 'Survival is a long shot.' She replies: 'That's kind of our specialty.' The movie is set half a decade after the 2022 Jurassic World Dominion movie, which starred Bryce Dallas Howard alongside Chris Pratt, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill among many more in the all-star cast. The synopsis of the movie reads: 'Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet's ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. 'Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived,' the summary continues. 'The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.' The star-studded cast also includes Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, Ed Skrein and many more. The newest and latest franchise film was directed by Gareth Edwards.

Starting over in paradise: 8 people on what it's like to run a business, find a home, and build a life in Koh Samui

On this sun-drenched tropical island, time moves more slowly — and that's exactly what many people were looking for when they chose to make it home. I had just wrapped up an interview with a millennial who left his life in the US behind to become a Muay Thai fighter. Next, I was heading off to speak with the French owner of a boutique hotel. Three days into my reporting trip, I was starting to see why so many people are drawn to Koh Samui, the Thai island that's recently been thrust into the global spotlight thanks to HBO's hit series "The White Lotus." Long before the show put it on the radar of TV audiences, Samui had already been quietly attracting people in search of something different: an unhurried pace of life, a lower cost of living, and the promise of a fresh start far from home. Samui, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is known for its gorgeous beaches and waterfalls. It spans about 88 square miles and is home to around 70,300 residents — including about 3,800 foreigners — per the latest May data. For comparison, Phuket, Thailand's largest island at roughly 210 square miles, is home to about 430,000 people, including almost 9,700 foreigners. Nearly everything of interest on Samui is connected by a single main road — Route 4169, also known as the Samui Ring Road — which loops around the island. The island's airport was built on the site of a former coconut plantation. Unlike Phuket's airport, which has flights across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, Samui International Airport mainly serves nearby domestic cities and a few countries in Asia. Six international schools also make it possible for families with children to settle in for the long term. It helps that the Thai government is invested in developing policies designed to welcome long-term visitors. In 2024, the country launched the Destination Thailand Visa in a bid to attract digital nomads, remote workers, and individuals interested in participating in cultural or wellness activities. All of these help position the island as an attractive place to live. Whether they arrived last year or almost two decades ago, everyone I interviewed considered Samui to be home. Some came to escape the 9-to-5 grind, while others came to start a business or raise a family. Regardless of their reasons, they all say they've found a rhythm that feels freer and more sustainable than what they left behind. From the US to the UK and beyond, they've put down roots — and aren't planning to leave.
