Craigslist post seeking military parade attendees is 'fake': White House

"Seat Fillers Needed - June 14th - Constitution Avenue - DC," reads the title of the June 10, 2025 post on Craigslist, a website for classified advertisements. The listing claims "compensation" will amount to a "Flat Fee of $1,000, paid in cryptocurrency" provided by "Fight Fight Fight LLC," a company affiliated with the launch of a Trump-themed meme coin in January. Its description continues: "T-Mellon Events is looking for seat fillers and extras to provide their time for space maximization and attendance perception for an event taking place in Washington DC on June 14th. Extras and Seat fillers will check in on the morning of June 14th at 9:00 a.m. Extras are required to wear Red, White and Blue clothing and will be provided a RED hat to wear. GOLD accessories are acceptable as well. The team will advise the extras where to stand or sit according to the line of sight from a VIP viewing platform area. Extras and Seat fillers will be paid a flat daily fee and will be provided a lunch of fast food and soda. We encourage people of color and ethnic groups to sign up for maximum perception control and these individuals will be prominently displayed on the televised broadcast and local viewing screens to be seen by the VIP platform." Screenshots of the advertisement rocketed across social media platforms including Facebook and X ahead of Trump's $45 million military parade, which is meant to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the US Army but will also coincide with the Republican president's 79th birthday. "No one is going to trump's stupid parade so he has to hire seat fillers!" says a June 11 post sharing the listing on X. American troops have been transporting tanks and other hardware to the nation's capital for days for what will be the biggest parade in Washington since 1991, after the first Gulf War. The event is expected to see nearly 7,000 army soldiers march past historic landmarks including the Washington Monument, helicopters soaring overhead and military vehicles rumbling along the route. Protests of the heavily-fortified event -- which critics have likened to similar displays of military might in autocratic countries including Russia and North Korea -- are also anticipated. To accommodate the parade and its crowds, Washington is slated to experience road closures, disruptions at some public transit stations and a temporary suspension of all evening flights involving Reagan National Airport. The Craigslist post offering payments to potential attendees is not connected to the White House and does not appear to be sincere, however. AFP could find no evidence that any entity named "T-Mellon Events" exists. No other listing mentioning such a group appeared on Craigslist as of June 13 (archived here). The language of the listing also appears to make fun of Trump's ventures into cryptocurrency, obsession with crowd sizes and well-known love of McDonald's. "This is obviously a fake ad," White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told AFP in a June 12 email. "Thousands of Americans will join President Trump for the Army Birthday Parade because they are excited to honor our active-duty service members, veterans, and fallen heroes." Reverse image search reveals the picture attached to the listing is an Associated Press photo showing Russian servicemen at a May 9, 2025 military parade in Moscow celebrating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II (archived here). Lisa Rodriguez-Presley, a spokesperson for the US Secret Service, also told AFP there will be no bleachers or seats along the parade route. The special agent in charge of the service's Washington field office said the same in a June 9 briefing -- negating the need for so-called "seat fillers" (archived here). He also said the event is not ticketed. Fight Fight Fight LLC, meanwhile, told TMZ and the US fact-checking website Snopes that the company had nothing to do with the Craigslist listing (archived here and here). AFP reached out to Fight Fight Fight LLC for comment, but no response was forthcoming. AFP also contacted the parade's organizers, Craigslist and the Craigslist account that posted the advertisement. The US Army declined to comment. AFP has previously debunked other misinformation around paid rally attendees here.

China deal ‘done,' Beijing to supply rare earths: Trump

Agencies U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the U.S. deal with China is 'done,' with Beijing to supply magnets and rare earth minerals while Washington will allow Chinese students in its colleges and universities. 'we are getting a total of 55% tariffs, china is getting 10%. relationship is excellent!' trump wrote on truth social using his trademark capitalization. 'full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by china. likewise, we will provide to china what was agreed to, including chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!),' trump said. Trump's statement came as China and the U.S., the world's two largest economies, said that they have agreed on a framework to get their trade negotiations back on track after a series of disputes that threatened to derail them. The two sides on Tuesday wrapped up two days of talks in London that appeared to focus on finding a way to resolve disputes over mineral and technology exports that had shaken a fragile truce on trade reached in Geneva last month. The Geneva deal had faltered over China's curbs on critical minerals exports, prompting the Trump administration to respond with export controls of its own, preventing shipments of semiconductor design software, aircraft and other goods to China. Trump's shifting tariff policies have roiled global markets, sparked congestion and confusion in major ports, and cost companies tens of billions of dollars in lost sales and higher costs. 'First, we had to get sort of the negativity out and now we can go forward,' U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters after the London meetings. Asian stock markets rose Wednesday after the agreement was announced. The talks followed a phone call last week between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to try to calm the waters. Li Chenggang, a vice minister of commerce and China's international trade representative, said the two sides had agreed in principle on a framework for implementing the consensus reached on the phone call and at the talks in Geneva, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Further details, including any plans for a potential next round of talks, were not immediately available. Li and Wang Wentao, China's commerce minister, were part of the delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng. They met with Lutnick, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at Lancaster House, a 200-year-old mansion near Buckingham Palace. Wendy Cutler, a former U.S. trade negotiator, said the disputes had frittered away 30 of the 90 days the two sides have to try to resolve their disputes. They agreed in Geneva to a 90-day suspension of most of the 100%-plus tariffs they had imposed on each other in an escalating trade war that sparked fears of recession. The World Bank, citing a rise in trade barriers, cut its projections for U.S. and global economic growth on Tuesday. 'The U.S. and China lost valuable time in restoring their Geneva agreements,' said Cutler, now vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute. 'Now, only sixty days remain to address issues of concern, including unfair trade practices, excess capacity, transshipment and fentanyl.' Since the Geneva talks, the U.S. and China have exchanged angry words over advanced semiconductors that power artificial intelligence, visas for Chinese students at American universities and rare earth minerals that are vital to carmakers and other industries. China, the world's biggest producer of rare earths, has signaled it may speed up issuing export licenses for the elements. Beijing, in turn, wants the U.S. to lift restrictions on Chinese access to the technology used to make advanced semiconductors. Lutnick said that resolving the rare earths issue is a fundamental part of the agreed-upon framework and that the U.S. will remove measures it had imposed in response. He did not specify which measures. 'When they approve the licenses, then you should expect that our export implementation will come down as well,' he said. Cutler said it would be unprecedented for the U.S. to negotiate on its export controls, which she described as an irritant that China has been raising for nearly 20 years. 'By doing so, the U.S. has opened a door for China to insist on adding export controls to future negotiating agendas,' she said. In Washington, a federal appeals court agreed Tuesday to let the government keep collecting tariffs that Trump has imposed not just on China but also on other countries worldwide while the administration appeals a ruling against his signature trade policy. Trump said earlier that he wants to 'open up China,' the world's dominant manufacturer, to U.S. products. 'If we don't open up China, maybe we won't do anything,' Trump said at the White House. 'But we want to open up China.'

Qualcomm buys Alphawave, Nvidia CEO talks AI in the UK, eVTOL stocks jump

Here are some of the trending stocks on Monday, June 9. Qualcomm (QCOM) is acquiring Alphawave Semi (AWE.L) for about $2.4 billion. Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang says he plans to invest in the United Kingdom, saying it's a "Goldilocks" situation for AI. Shares of Joby Aviation (JOBY) and Archer Aviation (ACHR) are jumping after President trump signed an executive order that will help boost electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) development and approval. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Morning Brief here. Now time for some of today's trending tickers. We are watching Qualcomm, Nvidia and Joby Aviation. First up, let's go to Qualcomm here, agreeing to buy semiconductor company Alpha Wave for $2.4 billion. The London listed company designs semiconductor tech for data centers, networking and storage. And the deal is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026. There you're taking a look at shares of Qualcomm actually responding well to this. Typically you see the company making the acquisition actually moving lower, but in the case where investors might say, hey, they got a pretty good deal and how accretive it might be to the business and the opportunity for scaling that business being acquired. Investors might be cheering this one on just a little bit here as evidence through the pre-market action here. Yeah, it's a fascinating markup for Alpha Wave. I believe it's a 96% markup from where the stock closed on Friday here. Uh also, for shareholders of Alpha Wave, they will have the option to convert those shares to Qualcomm shares. And a reminder adding to what Brad was saying, Alpha Wave does specialize in kind of that high-speed connectivity technology. So that is going to enable Qualcomm to be able to have access to data that can travel faster for less power, which perhaps is why the stock is up because that lesser power would also potentially protect their margins going forward in the future. Next up, let's talk Nvidia. CEO Jensen Wong, praising the UK's artificial intelligence sector, calling it a quote Goldilocks circumstance. Wong going on to say that it's an incredible place to invest while speaking at London Tech Week. This comes as the chip maker announces several partnerships in the UK and also comes as President Trump and Xi Jinping are in London having those trade talks today. Really interesting to see these tech CEOs picking other countries outside of the US to cozy up to amid the back and forth on tariff policy. Yeah, it's a little bit of making sure that you're also speaking kindly of some of the officials elected officials and even in the case of when they made the visits to the Middle East, some of the crown princes and other dignitaries there, making sure that you're staying away from any negative type of light, especially knowing that you're going to be trying to pop up data centers everywhere essentially. Uh and so for Nvidia, looking at and praising the UK especially with who they were speaking on this panel with, British Prime Minister Kier Starmer and then as well, the investment Minister, Poppy Gustavson, uh and talking about machine learning and where Nvidia potentially plays a role, as it uh as it's really intending to show its globalization efforts at this juncture. Uh another key opportunity for Jensen Wong to become even more internationally known than he already is and developing some of these partnerships uh as well with the UK this time. Absolutely. And finally here, let's go to the air, to the skies. Air mobility stocks climbing after President Trump signed an executive order aimed at boosting US drone manufacturing. Now, the order establishes a pilot program for electrical vertical takeoff and landing aircrafts, those EV talls. Now, the administration says that the program will allow companies that are already conducting this type of testing to partner with state, local and tribal governments. You're taking a look at shares of two of the more well-known EV tall companies, Joby and Archer Aviation, both moving higher here. Archer up by about 12% here pre-market. Want to hear something crazy about Archer? It's up 208% over the last year, which is crazy. Joby is up uh 60% in the last year and both um are up year to date, despite some of the stock market volatility. So certainly seeing some of that bullishness around these EV tolls getting any type of FAA regulatory approval playing out in the stock prices here. You also have uh Toyota backing the likes of Joby. And then you've got uh both companies looking to the Middle East as potential profit drivers going forward as well. So certainly a slew of catalysts for those names, especially Archer there with those moves to the upside.
