Women at the forefront of South Africa's green future

The Green Cab is spotlighting the young women transforming South Africa's green economy. Image: Supplied. In celebration of Women's Month, The Green Cab showcases the inspiring journey of a women-led enterprise transforming South Africa's electric vehicle (EV) mobility sector and empowering young women in the process. Through their flagship Driving Hope Project, The Green Cab is transforming urban mobility at one of Africa's most iconic destinations - the V&A Waterfront by providing a Hop-on Hop-off service in Micro EVs for visitors, residents, workers, and cruise ship passengers. This bold move not only enhances sustainable tourism but also places young South African women behind the wheel — empowering them with meaningful employment in a country facing staggering youth unemployment rates and epidemic-level Gender-Based Violence. 'This Women's Day, we don't just celebrate women — we celebrate hope, sustainability, and the tenacity of young women changing the face of the green economy,' said Lynn Maggott, one of the visionary founders of The Green Cab. Founded more than a decade ago, The Green Cab has weathered economic storms and industry shifts to remain steadfast in its mission: to drive gender-equitable, green solutions in tourism and transport. With welcome 'Sun' in the form of a grant from the uYilo E-Mobility Programme's KickStart Fund and 'Rain' by the Waterfront Company firmly backing this mission through financial and service-opportunity support, the project is set to flourish – accelerating The Green Cab's impact and reach. Nomonde Ndlangisa, strategic partner and tourism innovator, said:'We are redefining what the green economy looks like — it's not just about technology, it's about equity, dignity, and access. The women of The Green Cab are proof that sustainability and transformation can move together, and fast.' Video Player is loading. It is a rallying cry for inclusive growth, climate action, and economic empowerment. 'Our message is clear, 'women are not just passengers in South Africa's green future — we are in the driving seat' said Amiene van der Merwe, founder and MD of The Green Cab. 'We look forward to growing a thriving social enterprise where the environment and the young women who are driving their hope can truly Bloom.' 'We invite companies and investors to partner with us to grow this model in other precincts around South Africa,' added Van der Merwe. 'Together, we can build a future where our cities are cleaner, our women are empowered, and our economy is inclusive.' Weekend Argus
