Medvedev warns Trump's new deadline to end Russia-Ukraine conflict is a ‘step towards war'

President Donald Trump's new deadline for Russia to end the conflict with Ukraine is an additional "step towards war," according to former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev, now the deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia, cautioned that Trump's announcement Monday that Russia must end the conflict with Ukraine in 10 to 12 days would not end well for the U.S. "Trump's playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10… He should remember 2 things: 1. Russia isn't Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country," Medvedev said in a post on X on Monday. "Don't go down the Sleepy Joe road!" While Trump announced on July 14 that he would sign off on "severe tariffs" against Russia if Moscow failed to agree to a peace deal within 50 days, Trump said Monday that waiting that period of time was futile amid stalled negotiations. "I'm going to make a new deadline, of about 10 — 10 or 12 days from today," Trump told reporters from Scotland. "There's no reason for waiting. It was 50 days. I wanted to be generous, but we just don't see any progress being made." Trump's remarks come as his frustration with Putin has grown in recent weeks amid no progress toward peace between Russia and Ukraine, and just a day after Russia launched more than 300 drones, four cruise missiles and three ballistic missiles into Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian air force. Trump called out Putin for providing lip service during their discussions while not taking proactive steps to end the war. As a result, Trump said he's grown "disappointed" in the Russian leader and that he's "not so interested in talking anymore" with Putin. "He talks — we have such nice conversations, such respectful and nice conversation. And then, people die the following night," Trump said Monday. Following Trump's announcement about whittling down the deadline for a peace deal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Trump for his "clear stance and expressed determination" to resolve the conflict. "I thank President Trump for his focus on saving lives and stopping this horrible war," Zelenskyy said in a post on X on Monday. "Ukraine remains committed to peace and will work tirelessly with the U.S. to make both our countries safer, stronger, and more prosperous." Zelenskyy previously came under scrutiny from Vice President JD Vance in February during an Oval Office meeting for not voicing more gratitude for U.S. support for Kyiv as it battles Moscow. Although Trump has historically boasted about having a solid relationship with Putin, he has publicly voiced increased frustration with Putin in recent weeks as the war rages on between Russia and Ukraine. "We get a lot of bulls--- thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth," Trump said during a Cabinet meeting on July 8. "He's very nice to us all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless."

Medvedev tells Trump ‘Russia isn't Israel or Iran'

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has told US President Donald Trump that Russia is neither Israel nor Iran, and that every one of his threats is another step towards a potential conflict. The US president on Monday issued a more extreme ultimatum to Russia, demanding that Moscow reach a ceasefire with Kiev within '10 or 12 days.' Earlier this month, Trump threatened sweeping secondary sanctions against Russia's trade partners unless a deal was reached by autumn. Medvedev, who serves as deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, said that Trump was 'playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10…' In a post on X on Monday, he suggested Trump should remember two things: first, that 'Russia isn't Israel or even Iran,' and, second, that every new ultimatum constitutes a threat and a step toward hostilities between Russia and the US. 'Don't go down the Sleepy Joe [Biden] road!' he wrote. Trump's playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10… He should remember 2 things:1. Russia isn't Israel or even Iran.2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don't go down the Sleepy Joe road! During his election campaign last year, Trump repeatedly criticized his predecessor Joe Biden's handling of the Ukraine conflict, warning that US policy under the former administration had brought the world to the brink of 'World War III.' While Trump has re-engaged Russia diplomatically and pushed for Kiev to enter direct peace talks with Moscow, he has increasingly expressed impatience with the pace of negotiations. Earlier this month, after issuing his initial ultimatum, the president resumed US military aid to Ukraine through NATO. Russia has long condemned the US-led military bloc's arms supplies to Ukraine, arguing they make Kiev's Western sponsors party to the conflict, which Moscow sees as a proxy war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that although Russia is essentially fighting a war against the entire West on its own, it will not back down from its key security demand in the conflict. 'No dragging Ukraine into NATO, no NATO expansion at all,' the top diplomat said on Monday. 'It has already expanded right up to our borders.'

Russian ex-president Medvedev says Trump's Ukraine ‘ultimatum' could lead to war

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday that US President Donald Trump was playing 'the ultimatum game' with Russia and that such an approach could lead to a war involving the United States. 'Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with [Trump's] own country,' Medvedev wrote in a post on social media. Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's security council, also said Trump should remember that Russia is not Israel or Iran. Trump said on Monday that he was disappointed in Russian President Vladimir Putin's failure to end the war in Ukraine and that he was reducing a deadline to agree a peace settlement from 50 days to 10 or 12. Also on Monday, Medvedev said a framework trade agreement struck between the European Union and the United States was 'anti-Russian' likening it to a de facto ban on buying Russian oil and gas. The US struck the deal with the EU on Sunday, imposing a 15 per cent import tariff on most EU goods. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said in a statement afterwards that the agreement would help the bloc fully phase out Russian fossil fuels in favour of American alternatives.
