A man turns to the Reddit community for support following a tense family vacation that took a turn when his younger brother brought an unexpected guest.
The cabin trip was meant to be a 10-day getaway for close relatives and significant others, but one last-minute decision changed the entire dynamic.
He explains that his oldest brother brought his wife, 'who we've all known basically forever,' along with their baby. He says he brought his girlfriend, and his sister brought her boyfriend, adding, 'This was all communicated when the trip was originally booked,' and that both non-married partners already knew the family.
His younger brother, however, was single when the plans were made and 'never mentioned bringing anyone.' That's why it came as a surprise when 'the day we all arrive at the cabin he has this woman with him' — a woman no one had ever met before.
The man refers to her as Jill and says his brother invited her 'last minute.' According to him, 'I guess they'd been on a few dates, he'd mentioned he would be out of town and then suggested she come and she agreed.'
Initially, he feels irritated about a stranger joining their family trip, but others react differently. 'My sister and sister-in-law thought it was great… This is a great chance to get to know little bro's potential new GF,' he recalls.
His girlfriend also notices the awkwardness but ends up being 'roped into operation let's get to know Jill' despite agreeing with him that the situation is 'odd and annoying.' Any goodwill Jill had didn't last long.
He says she quickly 'squandered all of her good will with her attitude and her copious drinking.' She reportedly consumed 'a lot of alcohol that she didn't pay for' and made his older brother and sister-in-law uncomfortable.
By the fourth day, 'everyone minus little bro was sick of Jill.' His older brother tries to talk to him about it, but he 'became very defensive' and instead asks everyone to 'just try to be nice to Jill and avoid her when possible.'
The situation worsens when Jill begins complaining about the baby. 'She complained constantly about my niece, that she cried all night (not really) and kept her awake,' he writes.
At that point, he says, 'I hit my limit and said my niece was actually supposed to be here, unlike her.' Jill responds that if they don't want her there, 'maybe she should leave.'
Before anyone can respond, his girlfriend jumps in. 'If that's what you want to do, you should do it,' she tells Jill.
Little brother asks Jill to stay, but she turns to the group and says, 'Does anyone else want me to stay?' When no one answers, she leaves with him for the airport.
When he returns without her, the younger brother is 'annoyed with me for my comment.' OP fires back, 'This was his fault for not talking to any of us about this woman ahead of time.'
He also questions his brother's decision. 'I asked why he invited someone he seemed to barely know,' he says, to which his brother replies that he 'didn't want to be the only single person on the trip.'
Their sister steps in and tells them to stop fighting, which they do, but 'it was tense the rest of the trip.' Now, weeks later, his older brother is asking him to apologize to smooth things over.
'Older brother has asked me to apologize now that the trip is well in the past,' he explains. 'He said he agrees with me, but it would help bury the hatchet.'
The man admits he doesn't feel he should apologize and wants to know what others think. 'I don't think I should apologize, but what does Reddit think?' he writes.
He also finds Jill's choice to attend the trip odd from the beginning. 'If I was a woman, and I was invited by an admittedly cool dude to spend ten days with three strange men and three strange women, I would not want to do that,' he says.
He tells his girlfriend it's 'a HUGE indicator of something being off with her.' She agrees.
He adds that even in his position, he wouldn't accept such an invitation. 'Honestly, even as a man, I wouldn't take that offer,' he says, 'but yeah, I think it's especially weird that a woman did.'
Now, the family is left dealing with lingering tension from a trip that was meant to bring them closer together.
