Minors accused of breaking into vehicles prompts warning by Havre De Grace police

Two minors were arrested Monday for allegedly breaking into vehicles in Havre De Grace, Maryland, according to police. Officers located a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old after cars were reportedly scoured through in the 1000 block of Chesapeake Drive. A neighbor told WJZ that she heard car alarms in the middle of the night. When she went outside, she said three young men were attempting to break into cars. One of them yelled, "Hurry up, let's go," as soon as he saw her. "I'd like to see these kids home getting ready for school and not out dealing with the police at 4:30 in the morning, for sure," said Havre De Grace Sgt. Philip Goertz. Goetz believes more suspects are involved. If anyone has any information, call the Havre De Grace Police Department at 410-939-2121. Warning about vehicle break-ins The car break-ins have prompted Havre De Grace police to warn residents about locking their car doors. Sgt. Goertz said officers are responding to vehicle break-ins more frequently, especially over the last two months. "Typically, we might get one or two incidents a year like that, but not for it to extend the period of time that this one has," said Sgt. Goertz. "It seems like it is related to juveniles." Monday's incident happened on the 1000 block of Chesapeake Drive, and Sgt. Goertz says the suspects are 14 and 16 years old. Sgt. Goetz said the thieves mostly target cars with unlocked doors and get away with any valuables they can stash. "Make sure you take any items of value out of your vehicle, make sure your vehicle is secured, don't leave your keys inside the vehicle, and to the parents, we'd say make sure you know where your children are after 11 o'clock at night," said Sgt. Goertz.

Thieves targeting vehicle owners in Etna, police say

Authorities have issued a warning to car owners after a wave of vehicle break-ins hit another western Pennsylvania neighborhood. Police said the thieves in Etna are not only acting by themselves, but now with a crew of people. Several incidents were reported over the past week. Thieves were able to enter unlocked vehicles, grab valuables, and flee the scene within moments. According to police, a group of masked and gloved juveniles had been involved in recent incidents. "They stopped right at my car, and they were close enough that the driver reached out and tugged on my door," said Carrie Napiecek. Police confirmed that one man had been arrested the previous week, connected to a series of thefts. However, a separate incident occurred early Friday morning when seven suspects in a stolen vehicle targeted cars across Etna and surrounding communities, either breaking in or attempting to gain entry. "We had more sophisticated groups traveling in fours, fives, even sixes, with a driver. They were running down streets, testing door handles on parked cars," said Mayor Robert Tunon. The stolen vehicle used in the Friday morning incident was recovered miles away from Etna. Authorities said eight official reports had been filed as of that evening, but no significant valuables appeared to have been taken. "They trashed what was in the glove box and the console, and they maybe got $10 in quarters," said resident Kim Titus. "It's a little, I don't want to say scary, but it's concerning because this was the second time it happened." For many Etna residents, the crimes are becoming an unfortunate pattern. "It's such a nice neighborhood, too, and I know police are doing the best they can, but it's a bad situation," said resident Fred Ehrhart. When asked how borough officials were responding, Mayor Tunon pointed to community and police efforts. "There were two main efforts. First, residents were banding together and providing timely reports," said Mayor Robert Tunon. "Second, our police department had launched an active investigation into the initial incident, which resulted in an arrest. We kept residents informed, shared what information we had, and ensured the police department was actively investigating each report." Authorities urge anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to report it immediately so that investigations can continue.

Generate Key Takeaways Police are investigating a series of vehicle break-ins that happened along several streets in Hopewell Township. West Main Street was hit the hardest. Vehicles sit there with plastic covering smashed windows. Resident Erin Rudolph said she feels violated. 'I've owned this car for less than three months,' Rudolph said. Her Mercedes is now missing a window. 'They tried to get into my window here with some sort of pry bar. There are slice marks in my seals. The door frame is bent. My back window is completely smashed out,' said Rudolph. The broken glass is still on the ground where the car was parked. She tells Channel 11 that two hoodies and a work phone were taken. The damage is equivalent to about $2,200. Other valuable were left inside but Rudolph believes her beagles scared the thief away when they ran outside and started barking. 'It was smashed in. The two bads were gone and a bin of paper towels and Kleenexes had been rifled through,' Rudolph said. Renee Bears is dealing with the same issue. 'I have a window coming from the junkyard, so, hopefully, that'll get taken care of soon,' said Beard. Hopewell Township police tell Channel 11 these are two of at least six cars involved. Some items, like credit cards, were found in a dumpster, but two guns are still missing. 'Are they going to keep them? Are they going to use them the next time, doing what they do? Will they come back?' Beard said. Rudolph had this message for the person responsible. 'My guy, I'm just a person who works a crappy job. Mid-40s. Finally got a new car and you damaged my baby,' she said. This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available. Concern grows over ‘steady uptick' of crime in New Brunswick community

N.B. RCMP has been investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins in Petitcodiac. It's an unsettling scene‑a handful of people walking the streets of Petitcodiac, N.B., early Tuesday morning looking for whatever they can find in vehicles. People in the community have shared security camera footage and photos of cars being checked out on social media. Father Chris Hayes of the Anglican Church said it's making people nervous. 'It's not the type of thing we're used to seeing around here,' said Hayes. Father Chris Hayes of the Anglican Church Father Chris Hayes of the Anglican Church in Petitcodiac, N.B. (CTV Atlantic/Derek Haggett) Sgt. Guillaume Bélanger of the Southeast District RCMP said police are investigating a rash of recent car break-ins. 'We have had several reports actually. At least six or seven reports of cars that were been broken into,' said Bélanger. Bélanger said one of the suspects from Tuesday morning's activity has been arrested for a separate offence. He was wanted in connection to a recent theft of a truck in the area. Donald Bowser, an international law enforcement and security advisor who runs a community hub on Main Street, has seen a steady increase of criminal activity of late. There has been a number of vehicles that have attempted to be broken into. Some of them had, basically they left their doors open and people were able to get in them and ransack them, but we've seen this steady uptick in crime over the last year and a half,' said Bowser. Bowser said he believes the police are undermanned. 'There's three officers who cover the entire area. It's just not possible for the RCMP to police to the level where the community feels completely safe,' said Bowser. Three Rivers Mayor Peter Saunders believes most of the vehicle thefts are because doors have been left open, but he's concerned about people going on homeowner's property, especially late at night and early in the morning. 'That's not right,' said Saunders. Saunders said he would love to see more Mounties in Petitcodiac. 'Every community wants more of RCMP presence. That's a given,' said Saunders. Three Rivers Bakery owner, Trycia Wade, grew up in the community and isn't used to this. 'We didn't lock our doors and we were free to do whatever. Now, you don't know what to do. You lock up all the things that you're working hard for, for your family, because you're scared that it's going to be taken from you,' said Wade. Trycia Wade Three Rivers Bakery owner, Trycia Wade. (CTV Atlantic/Derek Haggett) Fathe Hayes is concerned about vigilante justice. 'When you hear an odd person here and there saying, 'They better not come near my place,' that's a worry too,' said Hayes. A community meeting will be held Monday at the Petitcodiac Hub and Saunders said council is working with the RCMP. 'Folks, you've got to lock your premises up,' said Saunders. 'Lock them up, folks.' Police are urging residents to lock their doors and not to take anything for granted. 'No one should be in your vehicle,' said Bélanger. 'Lock the door and make sure all valuable items are put away and not visible from the outside.' For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
