Alleged DUI driver arrested for deadly hit-and-run in Perris
An alleged DUI driver was arrested for a hit-and-run crash that left a woman dead on a 215 Freeway onramp in Perris last week. It happened at around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday on the Placentia Avenue onramp, according to the California Highway Patrol. It was there that officers say the driver of a Ford F-150 driving southbound on the freeway before entering the ramp struck a woman who was also heading in the same direction on foot. Instead of stopping to help the woman, the driver fled from the area. With the assistance of the Menifee Police Department, the driver was located and taken into custody, CHP said. They were booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, felony hit-and-run, driving with a suspended or revoked license and vehicular manslaughter. Anyone who knows more is asked to contact CHP at (951) 324-7210.

Suspected DUI driver arrested after pedestrian killed in Riverside County freeway crash
A suspected DUI driver was arrested after authorities said he struck and killed a woman who was walking on the freeway in Riverside County. On May 29, California Highway Patrol officers responded to a crash on the southbound lanes of the 215 Freeway near Placentia Avenue in Perris at 9:35 p.m. A preliminary investigation revealed that a female pedestrian was walking on the freeway when she was struck by the driver of a Ford F-150 truck that had just entered from the on-ramp. The Ford driver fled the scene without checking on the woman, later identified as Carol Omo Aba, 30, of Perris, CHP said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. CHP received tips from community members that helped them track down the Ford driver at a residence in Menifee. The suspect, identified only as a 41-year-old Menifee resident, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, felony hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter, and driving a motor vehicle while suspended or revoked. 'The resolution of this incident was made possible through the combined efforts of our community and allied agencies,' said Riverside Area Commander Captain Steve Branconier. Officials said the incident remains under investigation and any witnesses with information are asked to call CHP's Accident Investigation Unit at 951-324-7210. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Driver charged with manslaughter, DUI in fatal crash in San Francisco's SoMa
A driver is facing multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, following a deadly crash in San Francisco's South of Market earlier this week, prosecutors said. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins' office announced that 28-year-old Manuel Diaz-Chi was arraigned Thursday in connection with the crash, which took place near the intersection of 10th and Folsom streets early Tuesday morning. Diaz-Chi was charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury. He is also accused of having a blood alcohol level of .15% or higher and that he inflicted great bodily injury on the victim. Prosecutors said Diaz-Chi was behind the wheel of a Mazda van on 10th Street shortly after 5 a.m. He allegedly had been drinking all night and into the early morning hours. When reaching the intersection of 10th and Folsom, Diaz-Chi was allegedly following other vehicles too closely. He then went around the vehicles and ran over a woman who was in the middle of the intersection, according to prosecutors. The victim was dragged for a block. Police said they found the victim underneath Diaz-Chi's van. Medics took the woman to a hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Prosecutors said Diaz-Chi "displayed objective symptoms of intoxication" to police and that officers found bottles of beer in his vehicle. Diaz-Chi declined field sobriety tests but consented to a breath test which revealed a blood alcohol at 0.16%, more than twice the legal limit, at 8 a.m. During Thursday's hearing, prosecutors moved to have Diaz-Chi detained pending trial. The court set bail at $80,000 and he remains in custody. Diaz-Chi is scheduled to appear for a bail review hearing on Tuesday.

Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist receives probation for crash that killed pedestrian
The former guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers will not serve jail time for a 2024 vehicle crash that killed a man walking in an crosswalk in Alhambra, California. Josh Klinghoffer, 45, pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence in Alhambra court on Wednesday and was sentenced to one year of informal probation and 60 days of community labor. He also received 12 months probation, as well as a required driver safety class and court-ordered restitution. Alhambra is located just west of Los Angeles. A lawsuit filed by the family of 47-year-old Israel Sanchez accuses Klinghoffer of distracted driving when Sanchez was killed. Video released by attorneys representing the victim's family shows the March 18, 2024, crash in which the driver gets out of the vehicle and stays with the victim before police arrive. The lawsuit does not accuse Klinghoffer of hit-and-run, as the video clearly shows a driver tending to the person hit, but alleges that Klinghoffer was not paying attention while driving. An attorney for Klinghoffer called it a "tragic accident" and said he fully cooperated with investigators. "This was a tragic accident," attorney Andrew Brettler said in an earlier statement. "After the car struck the pedestrian, Josh immediately pulled over, stopped the vehicle, called 911, and waited until police and the ambulance arrived." According to the lawsuit, Klinghoffer was driving a black 2022 GMC Yukon with no license plates. A still captured from the video moments before the crash shows the driver on a cellphone or some other device, the lawsuit alleges. The lawsuit states "He (Sanchez) stopped at the corner and made sure the oncoming traffic had cleared and his path was safe … (he) took eight full strides within the marked crosswalk" just before being struck and killed. Sanchez suffered blunt force trauma and died from his injuries a little less than three hours later at the hospital. The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount in damages. Klinghoffer played guitar with the Red Hot Chili Peppers from 2009 to 2019, and has also played with Pearl Jam and Jane's Addiction.
