Suspected DUI driver arrested after deadly hit-and-run in Murrieta

A suspected DUI driver was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly struck and killed a woman before fleeing the scene in Murrieta. The crash happened at around 2:30 a.m. that morning on southbound lanes of the 215 Freeway near Murrieta Hot Springs Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Police say that Gladys Cruz Maeda, a 44-year-old woman from Lake Elsinore, was driving along the freeway when she collided with a water-filled traffic attenuator barrel that was placed by crews to slow traffic through a construction zone. She exited her vehicle to inspect damage to her vehicle, a 2014 Nissan Murano, when the suspect struck her. He was driving a 2004 Honda Accord. Instead of stopping to help, the man fled from the area. Paramedics declared Maeda dead at the scene. Her passenger, an unidentified man, was uninjured in the incident. Later Sunday, CHP officers were able to obtain evidence that helped them identify the suspect. They served a warrant at his home that afternoon and took him into custody without further incident. The suspect, who they have not yet identified, was booked on suspicion of DUI gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run, CHP officers said.

Teen killed, 3 others injured in suspected DUI crash in Petaluma after pursuit, police say

A 14-year-old is dead and a 17-year-old is suspected of DUI and vehicular manslaughter after a pursuit of a stolen vehicle ended in a crash in Petaluma Saturday night, police said on Sunday. Officers said they spotted a possible DUI driver on Lakeville Highway in Petaluma around 10:10 p.m. Saturday. About five minutes later, police said officers in a marked patrol vehicle attempted to stop the driver of the black Kia Sol after seeing them swerve into oncoming traffic. The driver took off from officers, beginning a police chase, police said. The police department said the officers saw the driver sideswiping a vehicle heading in the opposite direction. No injuries were reported in the incident. About three minutes after officers attempted to pull the driver over, police said the Kia Sol was involved in a rollover crash. All four of the occupants in the vehicle were ejected from the vehicle, with one passenger dying at the scene, police said. Police said the passenger who died was a 14-year-old boy. A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old passenger were taken to the hospital and are stable, police said. The driver, 17, was taken to a hospital where he is stable, police said. The teen driver is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, police said. He will be booked into juvenile hall after his release from the hospital on multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, evading causing great bodily injury or death, and DUI causing great bodily injury or death, the police department said. The identification of the 14-year-old killed has not been released at this time. Police said an autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Police said all the boys are from Marin County, but their relationship is part of the investigation.

Fillmore mother arrested for deaths of son, Oxnard woman in crash

A Fillmore mother was arrested July 8 for her alleged role in a traffic collision that led to the deaths of her son and the driver of the other vehicle a week before. Deputies with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office arrested Myryam Castillo, 28, on suspicion of two felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to a sheriff's office. Investigators allege that Castillo had consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel the evening of the July 2 crash. Deputies were called to the 1300 block of Ventura Street, also known as Highway 126, in Fillmore for the two-vehicle collision around 8:45 p.m. Sheriff's investigators said they determined that Castillo was driving her vehicle on the eastbound side of Ventura Street. She veered into a two-way turn lane and then into the westbound lanes before striking another vehicle head on, sheriff's officials said. The other driver, Maria DonDiego, 34, of Oxnard died in the crash, sheriff's officials said. Castillo's 5-year-old son was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Two other children were transported to local hospitals and sustained serious injuries, authorities said. Both families have since set up online donation pages. The Fillmore woman was booked into jail July 8 and released on $100,000 bond the following day, authorities said. Castillo has not yet been charged for the felonies, jail and court records show. The sheriff's office has asked anyone with information about the incident to call Deputy Bradley Bordon at 805-388-5146. Ernesto Centeno Araujo covers breaking news for the Ventura County Star. Anaheim woman arrested for 2024 crash that killed 67-year-old man

Irvine police arrested a woman from Anaheim on Thursday for a 2024 crash that killed a 67-year-old man. The deadly hit-and-run collision happened on May 9, 2024, near the intersection of Culver Drive and Trabuco Road. The Irvine Police Department said the 67-year-old victim, Allen Yangkaou Lee, drove through the intersection when another car, a Honda Civic with distinct racing-style decals, made a right turn against a red light in front of him. Lee swerved to avoid the driver but lost control of his 2004 Toyota Corolla and crashed into the center median before slamming into a tree and a light pole. "Our dad is gone," daughter Elaine Lee. "My kids won't have a grandfather." Lee's family said he was coming home after a weekly lunch with friends. Irvine detectives called this a no-contact, hit-and-run crash since the driver, 24-year-old Francis Guadalupe Tercero-Benavides, failed to stop. Detectives found Tercero-Benavides' car six days after the deadly crash but struggled to locate her because she frequently moved, according to Irvine PD. More than a year after the collision, police finally found Tercero-Benavides and arrested her for vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run charges.
