Foldable, fast, functional
Launching today, vivo's new foldable smartphone has arrived in Malaysia with the vivo X Fold5. theSun spent several days with it and the foldable has proven itself to be very impressive, with almost no drawbacks. At around 217g in weight, the vivo X Fold5 is quite light for a foldable in the current ecosystem, while its thickness is about 9.2mm while folded and 4.3mm once opened. The cover and inner foldable screens are essentially the same LTPO Amoled displays with HDR10+ at 1,172 × 2,748 and 2,200 × 2,480 pixels, respectively. In other words, the screens are bright and colourful. Better yet is the hinge itself. Unlike other foldables, the vivo X Fold5's hinge feels great and looks, well, it can not even be seen. The crease for the hinge once opened is practically non-existent unless looked at from certain angles and lighting. Multitasking muscle Built largely for multitasking, the vivo X Fold5 runs on the slightly older Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and 16GB RAM, but it is more than enough. Coupled with the Funtouch OS, everything that runs on the smartphone is quick and responsive. The main draw for the foldable will be its multitasking capability once its screens are opened. For those that always run two apps at the same time can do with the split-screen option accessed from the non-obstructive small multitasking menu at the top. But, the main reason that makes the vivo X Fold5 shine is the Origin Workbench. It enables users to run five concurrent apps or tasks on the same screen. The main takes the biggest chunk of the space, while the other four are grouped to the left. All apps run concurrently, remaining active and visible at all times, with users being able to swap freely between each with no lag. Like most of the industry, vivo's latest comes with AI capabilities. Accessed by swiping the sidebar, its AI Captions helps transcribe spoken audio, whether in real life through the microphone or system playback of whatever video or audio is being played in the smartphone. Anything that is recognised and transcribed can also be summarised by AI. Triple lens power The vivo X Fold5 has a whopping number of five cameras. Two are standard 20MP 'selfie cameras' and really not that great, but the real beauties are the smartphone's three cameras co-engineered with Zeiss. All three cameras are 50MP. The first is the main camera with a focal length of 23mm, the second is the ultra-wide angle camera at around 16mm and finally, the telephoto camera at 70mm focal length with 3× optical zoom up to 100× digital zoom. Photos taken during the day with all three cameras look good at their preset focal lengths, but the further it goes, the digital zoom starts kicking in harder to do the heavy lifting. Even night time photos look very good. In terms of videos, these cameras perform better. They support 4k video recording and come with image stabilisation, which is perfect for vlogging on the move. Having three screens further allows vivo X Fold5 to use a Rear HD Selfie mode to take videos (or pictures) with the smartphone opened up, as the cover screen becomes the preview screen. There is also a super-macro mode for extremely up-close and personal picture-taking. — MARK MATHEN VICTOR/THESUN Overall, the vivo X Fold5 is a great smartphone and will certainly make a big wave in the foldable market. The gathering allowed guests to examine the vivo X Fold 5 up close, and they later tuned in to a livestream from Kuala Lumpur where vivo confirmed the opening of pre-orders for Malaysia. The event in Kuala Lumpur began with vivo Malaysia chief executive officer Mike Xu delivering his keynote address where he presented the key attributes of the vivo X Fold 5. 'The X Fold 5 embodies that promise. At just 217 grammes in Titanium Gray finish, it is one of the lightest foldables on the market, yet its carbon fibre support hinge is engineered to withstand up to 600,000 folds. 'Both displays set a new standard, an 8.03 inch main LTPO AMOLED screen (2480×2200) and a 6.53 inch cover display (2748×1172), each offering a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and peak brightness of 4,500 and 5,500 nits respectively. 'Specifications include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, up to 16 GB LPDDR5X memory, 1 TB UFS 4.1 storage, and OriginOS 5 based on Android 15, with a promise of four years of operating system upgrades. 'Our new BlueVolt dual silicon anode battery delivers an equivalent of 6,000mAh, with 80W wired and 40W wireless FlashCharge,' he said. Xu added that with a ZEISS co engineered triple 50MP rear camera array, complete with optical image stabilization and 100× HyperZoom, and dual 20MP front sensors, the X Fold 5 transforms from smartphone to pocket sized DSLR. As for productivity, he said the X Fold 5 'behaves like a compact laptop' and that for creativity and entertainment, it 'opens up a world of possibilities'. 'Since our debut in Malaysia over 11 years ago, we have built a community of more than seven million users across our X, V, and Y series lines, each tailoured to excel in zoom, portrait photography, or durability. The X3 is powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine with 48 volt mild hybrid assistance delivering 190PS and 310Nm of torque, and when paired with an eight speed Steptronic automatic transmission and all wheel drive, achieves 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 215km/h. New study reveals Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thinner than claimed, but bad news for rivals

The study also found that other recent book-style foldables were thicker than advertised. This comes after reports that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was thinner than the HONOR Magic V5, which claims to be the thinnest foldable. HONOR says the Magic V5 is the world's thinnest foldable phone, but the company uses a dubious measurement method to make this claim. Now, a Korean study has shown that all recent book-style foldable phones, bar the Galaxy Z Fold 7, are actually thicker than claimed. The Korean Consumer-Centered Enterprise Association (via Business Korea) measured a variety of recent foldable phones with a micrometer and found that only the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was thinner than officially claimed. Samsung claims the device is 8.9mm thick, but the association measured it at 8.82mm. There's bad news for rival foldables, though. The association found that the HONOR Magic V5, vivo X Fold 5, Xiaomi Mix Fold 4, and HUAWEI Mate X6 were all thicker than originally claimed. The Mate X6 was 0.62mm thicker than advertised, followed by the X Fold 5 (0.57mm) and the Magic V5 (0.54mm). This doesn't sound like much, but it can make the difference for manufacturers claiming they have the world's thinnest foldable phone. Check out the table below, which shows the claimed thickness in the second column and the measured thickness in the third column. The report acknowledged that some brands measure their phones without including the inner protective screen layers. HONOR officially measures its device without accounting for inner or outer screen layers. This measurement method is particularly problematic as the inner protective screen layer is considered a permanent part of the phone. Consumers are warned not to peel off this film and that only repair agents should remove it. Do you care that foldable phones are slightly thicker than claimed? 0 votes Yes, it's completely misleading NaN % I care if it's significantly thicker than claimed NaN % No, I don't care NaN % I'd still urge you to take these results with a tiny pinch of salt, as Samsung Electronics is listed as a member of this association. Nevertheless, this isn't a good look for many recent foldable phones. So we hope these manufacturers switch to a more consumer-friendly method of measuring their phones. This isn't the only questionable measurement method we've seen, either. We recently discovered that HONOR, HUAWEI, OPPO, and vivo weigh their foldables without these inner films. That's something to remember when brands brag about having the lightest foldable phone on the market.
