Post Office choir founder says 'therapuetic' BGT stint was 'life changing'

Mark Wildblood, the founder of Hear Our Voice - the choir made up of people impacted by the Post Office scandal - says the initiative has been 'therapeutic' after a battle with depression. Hear Our Voice, the choir made up of people affected by the Post Office scandal which placed seventh in the recent series of Britain's Got Talent, are releasing a new charity single alongside band Will & The People. The single, Falling Down, is a rendition of the song they performed in their audition for Britain's Got Talent. And choir founder Mark Wildblood says the initiative has been 'life changing' for him, admitting the talent show stint has made a significant impact on his mental health. ‌ 'I personally have found it very therapeutic,' said Mark. 'I was on antidepressants prescribed by my doctor for a long long time and I spoke to them very early this year and I said, 'Look [the choir] is really starting to make me feel good and I wouldn't mind trying to go without [the antidepressants]. ‌ "So, at the recommendation of doctors I was told it's ok to give it a go and I haven't been back on them since,' he says of the choir's impact. Continuing that it has given him 'purpose' following dark days, Mark shared, 'It's not difficult to get caught up in dwelling on all of the negatives. So, to be surrounded by the same people that you talk to about it every day and that are seeing the positives as well, I think we've done a really really positive thing and a lot of that is thanks to BGT.' While Mark says the choir has meant he's managed to let go of 'anger' he was holding onto against the post office, he confirms that the 'concern' remains. 'My concern for the procedure is not eliminated. We still have to make sure that we get closure and closure can only come with compensation.' Mark was a sub-postmaster at Upton Post Office before he was suspended from the role as one of the thousands of people impacted by the Post Office scandal. The scandal saw the wrongful prosecution of sub-postmasters and postmistresses by the Post Office, who accused them of theft, fraud, and false accounting due to faulty data from the Horizon IT system used by the company. ‌ He founded the choir in May 2024, inviting others impacted by the scandal to take part and raise money for the cause, alongside awareness. As the former tour manager for Will and the People, Mark then enlisted lead singer Will Rendle to get involved as he fronted the act on Britain's Got Talent. And detailing how the choir has become a family dynamic, Mark said, 'W e always say to each other that we have become family now. The choir is spread out throughout the country and so BGT has given us the opportunity to actually meet five times in a very short space of time and be together.' Many of the victims are still awaiting compensation from the Post Office, with Mark admitting that despite the success of their campaigning and the recent TV series; Mr Bates vs The Post Office, there's still a long way to go. ‌ It comes as Simon Recaldin, a Post Office boss who has been backing compensation for the scandal victims, has left his position in the company. Simon is thought to have opted for voluntary redundancy, a move which comes amid the increased pressure on the company to pay victims. Previously, the government announced that those who have had convictions overturned are eligible for £600,000, with hundreds still waiting for the compensation. 'Scandals like these have a commonality where the bureaucracy of closure takes so long that many people pass away by the time that the situations are resolved - I just hope that we don't get into that situation,' says Mark of those yet to be paid. 'We've already lost a lot of people in the Post Office scandal and we can't afford to lose more without getting a speed up, so I would say to those in power, please change the system. It'll be better for everyone all round and cost a lot less money if they just do it now as it should be,' pleaded Mark. With fellow choir member Maria Lockwood joking that the unit would be keen to front the Glastonbury stage this summer, Mark says he isn't opposed to the idea. "We wouldn't say no to anything where we had the opportunity to get together in person again and Glastonbury would be amazing, that would be phenomenal." Falling Down, the single by Hear Our Voice choir and Will and The People, is available on all platforms from tomorrow, 10 June. 100% of profits after costs from the single are going to the Horizon Scandal Fund and Lost Chances—two organisations supporting victims and their families.

Prince William's two-word comment was 'first sign of tension'

Prince William and Prince Harry were already at loggerheads just a month after the Duke of Sussex married Meghan Markle, with the 'fab four' meeting to clear the air Just one month on from the wedding of Prince Harry and American actor Meghan Markle, cracks in the bond between the Duke of Sussex and his brother Prince William were already becoming evident. In what seemed a move to resolve their differences, June 2018 saw the brothers and their spouses meet at Kensington Palace. Yet, looming over this urgent summit was Prince William's sharp two-word remark that, with hindsight, showed the growing rift within royal r elations. ‌ Royal expert Camilla Tominey points out that Meghan's appointment as the fourth patron of the Royal Foundation led to conflict, revealing "how much tension there was between them". ‌ The dynamics are explored in the upcoming Channel 5 dramatisation, 'Meghan vs Kate: The Meeting That Changed the Monarchy', where Talk TV's Royal Editor Sarah Hewson recounts: "It was a late afternoon in June 2018, Harry and Meghan were heading over to Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace for 'clear the air' talks with William and Kate." Once viewed as the modern face of the monarchy, the unity of the once-dubbed "fab four" was shattered by the outcomes of this pivotal discussion, reports Cambridgeshire Live. Whispers had emerged that Meghan's off-camera conduct had rankled a member of the Kensington Palace team, with Kate reportedly taking issue with the former TV star's attitude towards the palace staff. Royal biographer Andrew Morton has suggested that Catherine may have felt "threatened" by Meghan's presence. With a successful acting career spanning over 15 years, Meghan brought a level of confidence and outspokenness rarely seen among Royal wives. ‌ Tensions were also brewing between the two brothers. In February 2018, during a public announcement that Meghan would become the fourth patron of the Royal Foundation, the four royals were asked if working so closely as a family led to disagreements. William responded with a resounding: "Oh, yes!" Harry agreed, adding: "They come so thick and fast. Working as family does have its challenges, of course it does. But we're stuck together for the rest of our lives." However, their professional collaboration wouldn't last much longer. Sarah Hewson suggests that royal journalists should have picked up on the tension between them: "Clearly things were not right between these two couples." ‌ In Tina Brown's book 'The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor-the Truth and the Turmoil', she highlights that public appearance as a significant turning point. She notes how Meghan "fluently" spoke in the interview, passionately advocating for causes that, while commendable, didn't align with the Royal Foundation's message. Tina described it as "a fashionable cause anointed by Hollywood and sure to make headlines," adding: "It was an awkward dynamic. It was later decided the Fab Four would not play onstage together as a band again." ‌ She observed that Kate seemed to be eclipsed by Meghan's presence: "When it was Kate's moment to speak, she was strikingly less articulate, as well as brief." Following this, the two couples would only make joint public appearances during larger Royal events, such as the Commonwealth Day services or the Trooping the Colour ceremony. It wasn't until nearly two years later that Harry and Meghan would publicly declare their intention to "step back as 'senior' members" of the Royal Family, planning to divide their time between the UK and the US, and pursue financial independence. Yet, it was William's succinct remark that seemed to signal the onset of a shift within the monarchy as it was known at the time.

Sir Alan Bates slams 'kangaroo court' who offered only half his compensation claim

Sir Alan Bates slams 'kangaroo court' who offered only half his compensation claim The 70-year-old, the subject of the ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office revealed he has been told to 'take it or leave it' The former postmaster has led a campaign for justice against the Post Office (Image: Lucy North/PA Wire ) The former postmaster who led a campaign for justice against the Post Office amidst the Horizon scandal has revealed he has been offered compensation less than half of his original claim. Sir Alan Bates said the offer had been made on a "take it or leave it" basis. The 70-year-old, who has been campaigning for 20 years in support of thousands of subpostmasters wrongly accused of dishonesty because of faulty software, says a 'quasi-kangaroo court' presided over by the UK Government has been responsible for the compensation scheme. ‌ The scandal, dramatised in the award winning ITV programme Mr Bates vs The Post Office saw more than 900 post office staff members convicted of fraud, false accounting and theft as a result of the Horizon IT system falsely showing money was missing. ‌ Convictions were overturned last year but many victims are still awaiting compensation. Mr Bates has said he has been offered a "take it or leave it" compensation figure, amounting to 49.2% of his original claim, after making an appeal to independent reviewer Sir Ross Cranston. (Image: ITV ) Article continues below Speaking to The Sunday Times, Mr Bates has called for an independent body to be set up to deal with compensation schemes for scandals involving the public sector. He added: "I can already hear the sharpening of goose quills across Whitehall as the civil service prepares to snow politicians under with reasons it would not work. "The sub-postmaster compensation schemes have been turned into quasi-kangaroo courts in which the Department for Business and Trade sits in judgment of the claims and alters the goalposts as and when it chooses. ‌ "Claims are, and have been, knocked back on the basis that legally you would not be able to make them, or that the parameters of the scheme do not extend to certain items.' The 555 claimants who took the Post Office to the High Court between 2017 and 2019 are eligible to seek redress from the group litigation fund (GLO), with claimants able to take a fixed sum of £75,000 or seek their own settlements. For individual disputes, referrals are made to an independent panel for review or seek a final view from former High Court judge Sir Cranston. ‌ A spokesperson for the Department for Business and Trade said: "We pay tribute to all the postmasters who have suffered from this scandal, including Sir Alan for his tireless campaign for justice, and we have quadrupled the total amount paid to postmasters since entering government. 'We recognise there will be an absence of evidence given the length of time that has passed, and we therefore aim to give the benefit of the doubt to postmasters as far as possible. "Anyone unhappy with their offer can have their case reviewed by a panel of experts, which is independent of the government.' Article continues below
