Kissena Park users say many of the drinking fountains, restrooms and more are out of service

For the bocce enthusiasts who gather daily at Kissena Park, surface conditions have long been an obstacle. "The court is very bad," Rafael Shalom said. Players say court maintenance depends on running water, but for years, the spigots have run dry. "This is a regional park in downtown Flushing, the park is filled on weekends, and there's no water," arborist and park steward Carsten Glaeser said. He estimates one-third of the park is without functioning drinking fountains, sprinklers, or restrooms, causing concern as temperatures climb. "I get aggravated, and so does everyone else that comes here," park regular Julio Mora said. The Department of Parks and Recreation told CBS News New York the outage can be traced to two broken water service lines. The agency says it is seeking $25 million in capital funding for repairs. Advocates say New York City parks are chronically underfunded, receiving about half a percent of the city's overall budget. But some residents worry other parks are getting priority. "There's always some parks capital going on somewhere," Glaeser said. "But we don't see anything here." In a statement, Councilmember Sandra Ung told CBS News New York that her office has allocated $12 million for Kissena Park improvements, writing in part: "I remain committed to working with my colleagues in government to secure the necessary funding and push this project forward so that families in my district can once again enjoy all that Kissena Park has to offer." New legislation passed by the City Council requires city parks to install at least 50 new outdoor drinking fountains by 2035. Kissena Park regulars hope their park will be first in line. Water finally restored in Dargaville

Many homes and businesses in the Northland town of Dargaville went without running water during King's Birthday weekend. Photo: RNZ / Peter de Graaf Water has finally been fully restored in Dargaville after a massive outage caused by four separate pipeline ruptures last week. Friday's breakages in the 40-kilometre water supply pipeline all but emptied the town's water reservoir and left most homes without running water or under tight restrictions. Kaipara District Council said water was restored to the last homes on upper Hokianga Road, late on Sunday afternoon. However, a resident living just off Hokianga Road told RNZ her taps only started flowing again on Monday night, an outage of almost four days. The council had to scramble to set up water tankers and portaloos around town during the King's Birthday long weekend, while contractors brought in extra staff from Whangārei and Auckland to fix the pipe. In an update posted late on Sunday, the council said tap water in some parts of town was still discoloured, but it had been treated and was safe to drink. The discolouration was caused by sediment being stirred up as the tanks were refilled. A council spokesperson urged Dargaville residents to continue using water conservatively while levels recovered. As of Sunday evening, the reservoir was about 25 percent full. The delay in reinstating water to the upper Hokianga Road area - including Panorama Place, Cobham Avenue and Mountview Place - was due to problems with the booster pumps, the council said.

Camino Real Regional Utility Authority schedules water service outage

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA) is planning a water service outage for Monday, June 2. Residents and businesses in the area between McNutt Road and Rita Street and Lonnie Street to Camino Real Drive will experience a water outage beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, June 2. Adjacent areas also may be affected. The water outage will enable CRRUA to repair a pressure relief valve. The repair work could take several hours and once service is restored, residents may notice discolored water due to naturally occurring minerals in the distribution system, CRRUA said. Although the water is safe to drink, CRRUA said it recommends waiting for the water to become clear before washing laundry. The discoloration should disappear within 24 hours. If it does not, residents should flush faucets for several minutes, the utility said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
