The Richest Places In New Mexico As Revealed By Latest Census Data
The Santa Fe suburbs and surrounding area are home to several of the wealthiest towns in New Mexico. Not long ago, a study analyzed and identified the wealthiest places in Arizona. Continuing with states in the southwest, New Mexico is getting its turn to get analyzed. This study evaluated over 520 cities in the state in order to identify the richest cities in New Mexico. The way in which the cities were evaluated and scored each city's ranking is detailed below. Read on to find out what the richest city in New Mexico is, plus the top 15 wealthiest cities in the state overall. What Are the Richest Cities in New Mexico? In order to assemble a list of the richest cities in New Mexico, several datasets were pulled from the Census Bureau's 2023 American Community Survey, and a four-factor scoring system was constructed to help identify the wealthiest cities in New Mexico. These were the four datasets: When it comes to Census data, for certain factors its numbers have upper limits. What is meant by that is, for example, for median household income, the Census Bureau has an upper limit of $250,000; any place with a median income above that is simply denoted as '$250,000+'. For median home value, the upper limit is $2,000,000, and anything above that is '$2,000,000+'. Lastly, for median property taxes paid, the upper limit is $10,000, so any amount above that is'$10,000+'. For these reasons, the mean or average household income dataset is critical because the Census Bureau has exact figures for it. All four of these metrics were scored, added up, and then ranked by the cities' combined scores. Below you'll find a table detailing the top 15 richest cities in New Mexico and their respective dollar figures for each metric: The No. 1 richest city in New Mexico in this ranking is Las Campanas, a golf course community and CDP in Santa Fe County. It only first appeared as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. Las Campanas is west-northwest of Santa Fe, and is home to the golf course The Club at Las Campanas. This place has some serious homes. And it's actually bigger than one might expect, with 875 households. In Las Campanas, the median household income is $196,023, which is one of the highest in the state. The average household income is much higher, at $261,178. The median home value reported by the Census Bureau is over $1.5 million. Not surprisingly, Las Campanas has the highest property taxes paid in New Mexico, the median being $6,666 per household per year. The second richest city in New Mexico is Hyde Park. Like Las Campanas, this CDP only just appeared in the 2020 Census. It too is located in Santa Fe County, this time northeast of Santa Fe. This is a somewhat secluded place, which can be accessed by State Road 475, and is made up of a series of streets. It's much smaller than Las Campanas, with just 129 households. The median household income here isn't far behind that of Las Campanas, at $182,446. The average household income, though, beats the No. 1 richest city, at $286,089. The median home value is $1.1 million, one of the few places in New Mexico where it exceeds one million. The property taxes paid are high as well, at a median of $5,714 per household. Coming in as the No. 3 richest city in New Mexico is Paa-Ko. This is yet another CDP that only appeared in the most recent Census in 2020. And like the No. 1 wealthiest city in New Mexico, Paa-Ko is a community centered on a golf course, the Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club. This place is northeast of Albuquerque, in between the Sandia Peak Ski Area to the west and South Mountain to the east. This place has 311 households, making it over double the size of Hyde Park. The median household income here, however, is markedly higher than in Hyde Park, at $217,946 a year. The average household income is no slouch, being $234,386 per year. The median home value is a bit lower, but at $744,500 is still substantial for a New Mexican city. The property taxes per household is high compared to the state overall, at a median of $4,444, but less than the first two entries on this list.

Recently, a series of studies have been analyzing and identifying the richest cities in states across the country. Some of the most recent studies have included the wealthiest cities in Indiana, Montana, Oregon, Washington state, among others. It was decided to keep going with this Pacific Northwest trajectory and analyze Alaska next. This study analyzed 111 cities in Alaska with complete data from the Census Bureau, in terms of their median household income, mean (average) household income, median home value, and median property taxes paid per year, to come up with a list of the 15 richest cities in the state. Read on to find out what the richest city in Alaska is, plus the top 15 wealthiest cities in the state overall. In order to compile this list of the richest cities in Alaska, important financial data from the Census Bureau's 2023 American Community Survey was sourced. With these chosen data points, a four-factor scoring system was constructed: You should be aware of a few oddities that the Census Bureau does with its data. For certain factors, the Census sets upper limits on the numbers, so there's no exact value for certain factors. Take for example median household income: The Census Bureau has an upper limit of '$250,000+', and will list exact values only for figures below that. For median home value, the upper limit is '$2,000,000+'. For median property taxes paid, the upper limit is '$10,000+'. Another aspect of the Census to point out, and is particularly relevant to Alaska, is the Census-designated place — CDP. The Census, more or less, treats CDPs as cities — their terminology is 'place' — and so will this list of the richest cities in Alaska. But if you see cities on this list that you see as, say, neighborhoods, you're not wrong; they just happen to be treated as cities by the Census Bureau. You'll find a table detailing the top 15 richest cities in Alaska and their respective dollar figures for each metric, below: The No. 1 richest city in Alaska in this ranking is Gateway, a CDP a little under 40 miles northeast of Anchorage. There's a little over 2,000 households in this suburb. More than 30% of households in this town earn $200,000 or more. The average household income in Gateway is the highest in the state, at $166,988. The median household income is $137,150 is the third highest. The median home value, as reported by the Census Bureau, is $436,200, which is among the top five. The property taxes paid, with the median being $4,993, is the highest in the state. The No. 2 richest city in Alaska is Chena Ridge, a suburb of Fairbanks, west of the city. Chena Ridge is a census-designated place and actually contains the ghost town of Chena, which used to be as important as Fairbanks back in the early 1900s. This town is of comparable size to the No. 1 richest city on this list, containing just under 2,300 total households. Chena Ridge's median household income is the highest in the state, at $140,722. The mean household income is $158,967. The occupational breakdown for Chena Ridge makes sense for a high-income town, with Management Occupations accounting for a fifth of the workforce, according to Data USA. The median home value here is $411,600, with corresponding property taxes being amongst the highest, with a median paid of $4,757. The third richest city in Alaska is Cooper Landing, which is due south of Anchorage, situated on Kenai Lake. This town doesn't have a large population. There are only 114 total households in Cooper Landing. The median household income here is just under the median income of Chena Ridge, at $140,500 versus $140,500. The average household income in Cooper Landing is actually less than the median, which is unusual, at $134,467. The median home value reported by the Census is $404,500. The median property taxes paid here is comparatively cheap among the richest cities, costing $3,313 per household a year.

The city is home to a number of beautiful and spacious homes. Its population is now over 3,100, a substantial increase over the last 10 years, spread across 1,508 households. Its median household income of $139,541 isn't the highest in the state. But its average household income of $240,832 is the highest in Delaware. The median home value is over $1 million, but it's the property taxes that really stand out: The median annual property taxes paid by household is $7,906. The top industries by employment, according to Data USA, are Finance & Insurance (17.6% of the workforce), Manufacturing (14%), and Health Care & Social Assistance (13.3%). The second wealthiest place in Delaware is a beach community, Henlopen Acres. This place is located just north of the morn well-known beach town of Rehoboth Beach. This is a small community, with only 106 total households. The average household income here is less than in Greenville — $182,445 versus $240,832 — but the median household income is higher, at $168,750. The median home value in Henlopen Acres is in excess of $2 million, making it by far the most expensive place in Delaware. The median property taxes paid per year here is $4,483. The No. 3 richest city in Delaware is Hockessin, which is another Wilmington suburb, right near the No. 1 richest city, Greenville. Hockessin is larger than that city, being home to over 13,000 people and nearly 4,800 households. The industries that employ the most people in Hockessin are Educational Services (16.8% of the workforce), Professional, Scientific, & Technical Services (14.6% of the workforce), and Finance & Insurance (13.7% of the workforce). The median household income in Hockessin is $172,695, which is higher than the No. 1 and No. 2 cities' median incomes. The average household income of $209,899 puts it behind Greenville's $240,832. Home values, though, in Hockessin are lower, reflecting the city's larger and more varied socio-economic demographic. The median home value here is $566,500, with a median of $4,800 paid in property taxes per household.
