Natasha Lyonne: How Poker Face Scared Execs and Championed Feminism

Besides the third Knives Out movie, Rian Johnson is currently in the middle of the second season of Poker Face which stars Natasha Lyonne was a non-detective who can tell whenever someone is lying. The show has managed to attract a number of stars and is getting rave reviews, and Lyonne says that the series originally scared several execs with the concept. Talking to Variety, she explains: 'I was doing backflips when I read it… I expected all the networks to feel the same, but a lot of people were scared by the idea that it wouldn't be a completely serialized storyline. You know, Charlie Cale goes back into her childhood and tries to find a husband while she's solving cases.' If anything, the fact that Charlie is a woman on the run who isn't tied down by a husband or boyfriend is what Lyonne considers a feminist theme for the series. 'For a female character to be led by a philosophical concept, or an ethical soul journey, is a really bold act by one of our greatest living auteurs (i.e., show creator Rian Johnson), who happens to be a guy,' says Lyonne. Admittedly, Poker Face does fall into this weird new web that Johnson has with the 'whodunnit' genre that also includes the Knives Out films; though Poker Face does have a different format in that the murders are revealed, but the real excitement is watching Charlie figure out how to catch the real perpetrators. The second season is still ongoing, and after that, audiences will be primed for Johnson's project with Netflix, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. For now, you can watch out for the second season of Poker Face now streaming on Peacock.

Mountainhead to See How They Run: the seven best films to watch on TV this week

In Jesse Armstrong's squirmingly funny satire, four tech moguls gather at a retreat called Mountainhead (a wry nod to Ayn Rand's paean to individualism The Fountainhead). When the launch of a deep-fake tool by Cory Michael Smith's billionaire Venis plunges the world into financial and social meltdown, he and his alpha male peers – Jeff (Ramy Youssef), Randall (Steve Carell) and their host Souper (Jason Schwartzman) – insouciantly ponder exploiting this 'moment of creative destruction' and taking over the world. As in Succession, Armstrong has a keen eye for the supercilious world of the super-rich, where people are expendable and petty grievances can be dressed up as utopianism. Sunday 1 June, 9pm, Sky Atlantic Part affectionate throwback to classic Agatha Christie, part knowing sendup, Tom George's engaging comic whodunnit is set in the wake of a murder after the 100th West End performance of The Mousetrap in 1953. The corpse is lecherous American director Leo Kopernick (Adrien Brody), who was due to film a version of the play. Sozzled Insp Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and eager, naive PC Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) are put on the case, with a star-stuffed cast of suspects – Ruth Wilson, David Oyelowo, Reece Shearsmith, Harris Dickinson – joining in the fun. Saturday 31 May, 9.20pm, Channel 4 Pete Docter's relentlessly inventive animation spins a touching yarn out of the competing emotions that swirl around a child's brain. Joy (a chipper Amy Poehler) is the controlling voice in the head of 11-year-old Riley. But when the girl and her parents move to a big city, San Francisco, the other feelings – Anger, Fear, Disgust, but principally Phyllis Smith's Sadness – come into play. An error in the handling of core emotions sends Joy and Sadness on a desperate quest into the weirder recesses of Riley's mind to save their charge in a bitter, sweet tearjerker. Sunday 1 June, 3.30pm, BBC One Tommy Lee Jones always appears most at home on screen with a stetson, a horse and a noble purpose. For this rare 2005 foray into directing, he gave himself a plum role as Texas ranch foreman Pete, who is determined to honour the last wishes of his friend and colleague, illegal immigrant Melquiades (Julio Cedillo), shot dead by trigger-happy border patrolman Mike (Barry Pepper). A modern western with a social conscience and a dose of mordant wit, it also has time for those genre staples of self-sufficiency, friendship and loyalty. Sunday 1 June, 9pm, Great! Action Sign up to The Guide Get our weekly pop culture email, free in your inbox every Friday after newsletter promotion A woman who lived her life battling the repression that is an enduring theme in her novels, Irish author Edna O'Brien is a terrific subject for a documentary. Sinéad O'Shea does her proud here and is blessed with access to the then 93-year-old – who is as sharp as ever when talking through her experiences. But O'Brien is also tinged with melancholy – a result of a traumatic childhood, an oppressive marriage and the misogynist resentment she faced – not least back in Ireland – due to her frank opinions. Sunday 1 June, 9pm, Great! Action Armando Iannucci's 2009 comedy bridges the gap between The Thick of It and Veep by throwing together governmental fools and chancers from the UK and US. It also ups the ante by making the result of the bungling of its apparatchiks, spin merchants and elected officials an actual war. Most of the Thick of It cast return, though confusingly as different characters. Luckily, Peter Capaldi's vituperative director of comms Malcolm Tucker is present and incorrect, bullying the out-of-his-depth minister for international development Simon Foster (Tom Hollander) on an ill-fated visit to Washington DC. Tuesday 3 June, 11.45pm, BBC Two New Mexico casual labourer Dylan (Charlie Plummer) is getting by day to day with his alcoholic mother and younger brother, until he gets a casual job at the House of Splendor ranch. It is home to – and refuge for – a community of LGBTQ+ folk, in particular rodeo rider Sky (Eve Lindley). Her and Dylan's mutual attraction is instant, though she is already in a relationship that maybe isn't as open as she says and he hopes. Luke Gilford's queer coming-of-age drama is a warm-hearted tale of finding your people, set in a bigotry-free environment that keeps the political personal. Wednesday 4 June, 11.20pm, Film4

Tilda Swinton and Director David Lowery Team Up for Whodunnit Thriller DEATH IN HER HANDS — GeekTyrant

Tilda Swinton and director David Lowery are joining forces for a new film that sounds eerie, cerebral, and totally unclassifiable. The movie is titled Death in Her Hands , and it's based on Ottessa Moshfegh's 2020 novel. It's the latest project from See-Saw Films, the same outfit behind The Power of the Dog and The King's Speech , and it tells a very unique whodunnit story. Swinton plays Vesta Gul, 'a woman striving to take control of her own story' and she comes across a chilling handwritten note in the woods near her home: 'Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body.' 'Except there is no body. No blood. Unmoored by the death of her husband and armed only with a camera, her dog Charlie, and her vivid imagination, Vesta becomes obsessed with uncovering Magda's identity and fate. 'As her inner world begins to eclipse reality, the mystery of Magda threatens Vesta's grip on her own life – until, in a spellbinding operatic climax, we realize that Magda's death may finally allow Vesta to live.' David Lowery, best known for genre-bending films like The Green Knight , A Ghost Story , and The Old Man & the Gun , is writing and directing. He said in a statement: 'I am a devoted fan of Ottessa Moshfegh, and the opportunity to translate Death In Her Hands to the big screen has been, in some ways, a subterfuge for getting to spend a great deal of time obsessing over her prose. But now the ruse is up! 'The script begot by the novel will soon become a film, and I am suddenly aware more than ever that adapting this particular work represents a devious challenge (anyone who's read the novel will understand why)! 'But I'm ready for it, and am emboldened to have such wonderful collaborators at my side: the whole team at See-Saw, Jeanie, and of course, the incredible Tilda Swinton, who I know will illuminate Ottessa's story in ways I could only dream of.' Swinton, as usual, feels like the perfect choice. She's an actor who thrives on complexity, and knows how to walk that fine line between grounded human emotion and uncanny surrealism. Producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman shared: 'David Lowery is a master of crafting striking, atmospheric stories, and there's no one better to bring Ottessa Moshfegh's haunting and brilliant novel to the screen. We can't wait for audiences to step into the world he creates and be swept away by Vesta's story, played by the incomparable, magnetic, and endlessly compelling Tilda Swinton.' Production is backed by See-Saw Films with Jeanie Igoe also producing, and Simon Gillis and Ann Phillips serving as executive producers. Swinton will next appear opposite Colin Farrell in Edward Berger's The Ballad of a Small Player . Meanwhile, Lowery continues his streak of projects that resist simple genre labels, instead offering something far weirder, richer, and more haunting.

Emmerdale fans convinced they've worked out Joe Tate's ‘real killer' – and it's not who you'd expect

EMMERDALE fans think they have worked out the 'real killer' of Joe Tate after his horror fall from a Home Farm window. The ITV soap launched a classic whodunnit last night with fans now speculating as to who could be the mystery assailant. 4 4 Throughout the hour-long episode, viewers saw as many of Joe's enemies all gathered at Home Farm as part of a 50th birthday party for Lydia Dingle - who ironically did not feature in the episode at all. He clashed with Charity, Noah, Dawn, Billy, Caleb and Kerry to name just a few. With his secrets and lies on the verge of being exposed - he was left as public number one. However, fans of Emmerdale think that the culprit is someone else altogether - and she wasn't even at the party. They have speculated that Clemmie Reed - the adopted daughter of Dawn could in fact be the pusher. Clemmie was included on an official list of suspects released by ITV but it seemed unlikely that she would be able to overpower Joe enough to haul him out of a window. One fan said of Clemmie's potential involvement: "As for who attacked Joe my money is on Clemmie!" Another added: "Got a feeling it was Clemmie pushed Joe out the window." As a third said: "I hope Clemmie pushed him out of that window tbh." Before a fourth penned: "I reckon Clemmie did it. And good for her." Watch the moment Emmerdale's Dr Liam is whacked over the head in unprovoked attack - but he has no idea who did it? Earlier in the week, Clemmie and Joe came to blows when she revealed she had spotted him kissing Dawn. In order to get her to keep her mouth shut, Joe threatened her during a furious war of words and insisted she would be placed back in care. It led Clemmie to bite him in anger and although Joe tried to bribe her to keep quiet, she eventually spilled all on the affair to her heartbroken step-dad, Billy. 4 4

Walton Goggins mocks obsessive ‘White Lotus' fan theories ahead of hosting ‘SNL'

Walton Goggins is playing his own game of whodunnit on the set of 'Saturday Night Live' before the 'White Lotus' star takes the stage as the upcoming episode's host. In a new promo posted to the 'SNL' X page on Wednesday, Goggins pokes fun at the fervor surrounding the hit HBO show in which he starred by jokingly theorizing with 'SNL' cast member Marcello Hernandez about 'who's gonna die' at the end of the NBC sketch show's season. (HBO, like CNN, is a property of Warner Bros. Discovery.) 'It's not that kind of snow, man. It's 'SNL,' no one's gonna die,' Hernandez says. Goggins goes on to tell Hernandez his 'theory' anyway, saying, 'Colin Jost, Michael Che, murder-suicide!' 'No!' Hernandez exclaims, adding that 'these are real people, they're not characters… no one is dying.' Undeterred, Goggins continues to wildly theorize about who will kill Hernandez, vacillating between cast members Heidi Gardner and Chloe Fineman before finally landing on Bowen Yang, joking, 'It would always ever be Bowen, because he hates you.' Just then, like a scene from a horror film, cast member Michael Longfellow comes up from behind and pretends to stab Hernandez, revealing himself as the killer. 'I should have been Domingo,' Longfellow says, referencing Hernandez's viral recurring character. Goggins, living for the moment, then says, 'Wow, I did not see that coming! Prestige television!' The 'Righteous Gemstones' star appeared in the most recent season of 'The White Lotus,' which came to a dramatic conclusion in April. The Mike White-created series is a social satire that follows several different groups of people on vacation at luxe resorts around the world, with each season including a cast member death (or deaths) that is teased in the season opening and then revealed in the finale. Goggins will make his 'Saturday Night Live' hosting debut this weekend alongside musical guest Arcade Fire. 'SNL' airs on Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT on NBC.
