ENG vs IND: Rishabh Pant surpasses MS Dhoni for most 50+ scores in England
Rishabh Pant came out to bat with a fractured toe but still managed to complete his half-century in the 4th Test between India and England at Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday. This was Pant's ninth 50-plus score in England, making him the wicketkeeper-batter with the most 50+ scores in an away country. He surpasses MS Dhoni, who had eight such scores in England during his career. 27-year-old Pant has now recorded five 50-plus scores in the ongoing Test series against England in 2025, setting a new record for the most 50+ scores by an Indian wicketkeeper in a single Test series. This takes him past legendary names such as Farokh Engineer (4 vs ENG in 1972/73) and MS Dhoni, who had four each against Australia (2008/09) and England (2014). Pant also etched his name in the history books, with 479 runs and counting. As he now holds the record for the most Test runs scored by a wicketkeeper in a single series in England, surpassing Alec Stewart's 464-run tally against South Africa in 1998. What makes Pant's achievement even more extraordinary is the context in which it has come. Battling a fractured toe in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, the 27-year-old has not only shown resilience but also displayed his trademark flair. His runs have been crucial in an injury-hit Indian lineup that is searching for batting consistency amid testing conditions. Pant eclipsed a long-standing record held by Stewart, a hallmark of England's late-90s cricketing era. Interestingly, Jamie Smith, England's own rising wicketkeeper, also features on the list with 415* runs in the same 2025 series—highlighting the high standards set by both glovemen in the ongoing contest. Jonny Bairstow's 387 runs against Sri Lanka in 2016 rounds off the elite list, further underlining Pant's place among modern-day greats in red-ball cricket. 479* - Rishabh Pant vs ENG, 2025 464 - Alec Stewart vs SA, 1998 415* - Jamie Smith vs IND, 2025 387 - Jonny Bairstow vs SL, 2016

Rishabh Pant ruled out of England series with fractured toe after reverse sweep blow
MANCHESTER: India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the ongoing Test series against England after scans confirmed a fracture in his right toe, sustained while attempting a reverse sweep on Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Pant, batting on 37 in the 68th over, inside-edged a delivery from Chris Woakes onto his foot during the final session on Wednesday. Although England reviewed the LBW appeal, replays showed an inside edge. Soon after, Pant signalled for medical attention and was visibly in pain, with blood seeping from his right foot. Unable to continue, he was carted off the ground on a buggy. 'He is ruled out for the next six weeks. A cover will be called in and it is likely to be Ishan Kishan,' a BCCI source told PTI. A source close to Pant said, 'At the moment, he's unable to put pressure on his foot, as everyone saw, he was carted off the ground yesterday. But he's determined, and knowing him, he might still come out to bat, who knows. That said, much will depend on the medical advice, not just his intent.' Despite the possibility floated by his camp, team sources later confirmed there was 'just no chance' of Pant returning to bat in the match. 'Yes, Rishabh Pant is ruled out of the series. He went for scans last night, and the reports have revealed a toe fracture. He is in a lot of pain right now,' sources told Hindustan Times. Pant remains with the squad but is reportedly unable to put any weight on the injured foot. He will be sidelined for up to two months, which makes him unavailable for India's immediate international commitments, including the potential white-ball series in Sri Lanka and the Asia Cup, if they go ahead as scheduled.

Indias injury woes worsen as Pant out of England series with fractured toe
Last Updated: Manchester, Jul 24 (PTI) India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was on Thursday ruled out of the ongoing Test series against England after fracturing his toe on the opening day of the fourth Test here, adding to a growing injury list and robbing the visitors of his much-needed flamboyance with the bat. The 27-year-old Pant retired hurt at 37 and went for scans after copping a blow on his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off England pacer Chris Woakes on Wednesday. Going into day two, all the chatter at Old Trafford was about Pant, who is probably the only one in the current Indian batting line-up with an ability to change the momentum with his audacious stroke-play. On expected lines, he did not travel with the team to the ground on Thursday and instead went for additional scans. 'He is ruled out for the next six weeks. Ishan Kishan will be called in as cover. His metatarsal bones (a group of five long bones located between the ankle and toe) seem to be shattered. It doesn't look good at all," a BCCI source told PTI. An official update from the BCCI is still awaited. But the severity of the injury was apparent given the blood that was seen seeping off Pant's right foot. The affected area had considerable swelling as well. On day one, Pant was the only one to take the attack to Jofra Archer and Co. while the other batters struck at three runs per over. India have already lost all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to a knee problem, while pacers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh are missing the ongoing game because of a groin niggle and a finger injury respectively. Pant's ouster adds to the problems for the team which is trailing 1-2 right now. Kishan, who recently played two County matches for Nottinghamshire, was also a part of the India A squad that faced the England Lions ahead of the Test series, though the 26-year-old did not appear in any of the two matches. The think tank can also ask KL Rahul to keep wickets, but he has not performed that role since the tour of South Africa in the 2023-24 season. 'He hardly put his foot on the ground (after the impact). The immediate swelling was a worry for me. I have had a metatarsal injury myself and they are small fragile bones. 'The fact that he could not put any weight on it, it doesn't look good at all," Ricky Ponting, who is commentating on the game, had said on 'Sky Sports' after the incident. Dhruv Jurel, the other wicketkeeper in the squad, was not picked for the current match. This was the second injury for Pant in this series as he had bruised his finger while keeping during the third Test at the Lord's, which prevented him from guarding the stumps in England's second innings. The flamboyant player made his comeback to international cricket only last year after surviving a life-threatening car crash in 2022. England think Rishabh Pant will 'not be seen again' in the Manchester Test after woeful injury: 'Didn't look great'
England spinner Liam Dawson reckons Rishabh Pant will take no further part in the Manchester Test after the India vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batter suffered a gruesome injury on the opening day. The left-handed batter went for a reverse sweep off the bowling of Chris Woakes and, in the process, ended up injuring his foot. The batter was in tremendous pain and had to be taken off the field. He also underwent scans at the nearest hospital, and the reports are awaited. Liam Dawson reckons Rishabh Pant 'will not be seen again' in the Manchester Test(PTI) The 27-year-old's foot was badly swollen, as the live visuals showed, and he looked in unbearable pain after inside edging an attempted reverse sweep onto his right foot. He managed to survive the LBW appeal and the subsequent DRS. However, his inability to put any weight on his foot was a major worrying sign. Rishabh Pant was then taken off the field with the help of a golf-style buggy. He received medical attention from India's physio and was taken to the medical facility on the ground. The Indian captain, Shubman Gill, also went to see him there. Dawson, speaking to reporters after stumps on Day 1, said that he doesn't see Pant taking any further part in the match as his injury looked quite bad. 'Hope he's alright. Didn't look great, that. Obviously, thoughts with him. He's a big player for them. I don't think we'll see him again in this game,' said Dawson. Also Read: Rishabh Pant rushed to Manchester hospital for scans; Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill worried Pant was looking really good in the middle, and he was involved in a stand of more than 50 runs with Sai Sudharsan. The left-handed batter was batting on 37 off 48 balls when the incident happened. His innings also included a slog sweep off the bowling of Jofra Archer. At stumps on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, India's score read 264/4 in 83 overs with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur batting on 19 each. What Sai Sudharsan said? Sai Sudharsan, who was at the non-striker's end at that time, said Pant was in a lot of pain. The team management is just hoping the scans do not reveal something more serious than what meets the eye. 'Obviously, he was batting really well. We will miss a batter if he doesn't come back again. So it will definitely have consequences, but at the same time, the batters we have batting right now, and there are a few more all-rounders inside,' said Sudharsan. 'So we will try and give our best and bat long so that we negotiate that loss well,' he added. This is the second injury that Rishabh Pant has faced in as many matches. In the previous Test at Lord's, Pant had suffered a blow on his left index finger while wicketkeeping during England's first innings. Dhruv Jurel then came in as a substitute wicketkeeper, and there are high chances of this happening in the ongoing Manchester Test as well.
