Photo-sharing app Locket is banking on a new celebrity-focused feature to fuel its growth
Locket, the photo-sharing app that allows users to share images with friends that are then displayed on their home screens as widgets, wants to stay on your radar, and it's enlisting the help of celebrities. Locket emerged as a competitor to BeReal when it launched in 2022, offering a more authentic way to connect with others. The app places a widget on iPhone home screens that updates with the latest pictures added by friends. Users can select up to 20 close friends, creating an intimate space to share unfiltered selfies and updates on their lives. The app claims to have over 80 million total downloads, more than 9 million daily active users, and its users have shared more than 10 billion photos to date. Notably, the company also shared with TechCrunch that it achieved profitability in 2024, a significant accomplishment given its relatively modest fundraising efforts of just $12.5 million. To drive additional growth, Locket has been quietly testing a feature called 'Celebrity Lockets' for the past six months, which the app officially announced on Wednesday. Locket has already tested this feature with Sukie Waterhouse and JVKE, with more artists to be announced soon. To use the feature, celebrities can share a link on their social media platforms, or fans can look them up in the app to add them, and they can then send photos directly to their fans' home screens. 'With posts going straight to fans' home screens, it offers the kind of immediacy and intimacy that other platforms can't replicate, turning passive followers into active participants,' founder Matt Moss told TechCrunch. San Francisco | REGISTER NOW Locket allows artists to choose a number of fans to connect with, ranging from 1,000 to 15,000 slots. For instance, Suki has 5,000 fans on the app and has helped Locket attract hundreds of new members. According to the company, 17% of these 5,000 fans were new to Locket. 'Fans feel special knowing they're one of just a few thousand rather than just another follower. This also preserves the same intimacy and brand of Locket as a product today … We knew our community used Locket to share music with their friends, so being able to also connect with their favorite artists is a natural evolution for the platform,' Moss said. Although Moss says the feedback from testers has been good, it's unclear whether this will help Locket grow its user numbers. BeReal tried something similar with a feature called 'RealPeople,' but the reception wasn't entirely positive, with some people saying that they preferred the anti-social media app as a way to escape from celebrities.

Google Home can't catch a break, as Routines widget vanishes
TL;DR One of the widgets offered by the Google app has been a shortcut for accessing your Home Routines. In the latest Google app beta, the Routine widget is no longer available. This loss arrives right in the middle of a growing period of Google Home frustration. If you're interested in putting together a particularly impressive smart home setup, Google Home's Routines are probably your best friend. While getting them configured can take a minute, especially if they involve dozens of devices (like all your lights), once established Routines make it a snap to trigger complex actions with just a single command. So far, Google has offered Home users a handy shortcut for controlling all those Routines in the form of a desktop widget. While it doesn't let you activate Routines directly from your home screen, it does offer a quick way to jump that list. Old list of widgets Old Routines widget New list without Routines While it could certainly be more full-featured, that was still a nice option to have, which is why we're a little concerned to see Google take it away. While looking through the latest beta release of the Google app for Android, we noticed that where the app used to offer four widgets and one shortcut, that count has now dropped to three — and it's the Routines widget that doesn't make the cut. Honestly, losing this isn't going to be the end of the world, but more than anything, maybe we're just disappointed about how this removal looks in the context of the ongoing frustrations surrounding Google Home. It really doesn't feel like it would have been that much more effort to give us a new-and-improved Routines widget with direct access to our most-used ones, but rather than be bothered to do that, Google just seems to be abandoning the whole thing. It's possible that that Google really does have a new version of this tool waiting in the wings — but then why not coordinate its debut to coincide with retiring the old look? We're also holding out hope that this is just some kind of beta oversight that may not show up in the final, public release of this build. Because when we look at this change right now, it really just feels like Home and its associated features are not a big priority. Follow

Pixel VIPs widget is here to help you stay connected to your most important people
TL;DR Google has officially launched the Pixel VIPs widget for devices from Pixel 6 onward via the June Pixel Feature Drop. The home screen widget displays key updates like last calls, WhatsApp messages, locations, and birthdays for up to eight chosen contacts. VIP contacts can also bypass Do Not Disturb settings. Google has been working on a new Pixel VIPs widget for the Google Contacts app for a while now. Last month, we got a good idea about how Pixel VIPs would work, and earlier this week, the Pixel VIPs app also appeared on the Play Store for some users. Finally, with the June Pixel Feature Drop, Pixel devices are now getting the Pixel VIPs feature. The new Pixel VIPs widget from the Contacts app is a 4×1 home screen widget that helps you stay connected to the most important people in your life (up to eight of them). Google suggests adding as much information as possible to their contact cards within the Contacts app, with details like birthdays, emails, home addresses, and even preferences with notes. While the press release doesn't specify what this will do, we know from our earlier coverage that this will give us a populated Google Contacts profile for those contacts, serving as a central store of various information about that person. Details like their address will help populate local weather and time information. The widget surfaces key information from these VIPs, such as their last call and messages, including from WhatsApp, as we had spotted before. It also surfaces their location when shared and receives updates for important events like birthdays and anniversaries. Further, VIPs can also bypass Do Not Disturb settings. The Pixel VIPs widget is available for Pixel 6 and newer devices with the June 2025 Pixel Feature Drop, so check for a pending software update. The feature's fine print notes that it supports Google Messages and WhatsApp services only. Pixel VIPs app makes an early appearance on the Play Store

The app reveals more details about the upcoming Pixel VIPs home screen widget. Unfortunately, you can't access the actual Pixel VIPs widget after downloading this app. We uncovered the existence of a Pixel VIPs widget back in January. This widget centralizes all sorts of info from your preferred contacts in a home screen widget. Now, it looks like the feature is available to Pixel phone owners — well, sort of. The Pixel VIPs app listing is showing up on the Google Play Store for some Pixel owners, and we're able to see this on our own Pixel phones as well. Users can also tap the 'update' button and install it. Check out the screenshots below. 'Quickly and easily connect with the people who matter most to you. See your last call and message with them, their real-time location, activity suggestions, and more,' reads an excerpt of the app listing. 'Your VIPs can also bypass Do Not Disturb, so you never miss a moment.' We also previously uncovered evidence that the feature supports up to eight contacts, birthday reminders, and notes functionality for a contact. Furthermore, we discovered that WhatsApp integration was also in the works. So this certainly seems like a robust widget and feature. Unfortunately, updating the app doesn't actually enable the Pixel VIPs widget right now. So we'll likely have to wait for an additional update or server-side change to access the feature. Google is giving the Search bar on your phone a much-needed facelift

The redesigned Search bar puts more emphasis on the custom shortcut button. Users have a variety of available shortcut tools to choose from. One of the most used widgets on your Android phone is likely to be the Google Search bar. After all, it's there by default, and it's the easiest way to initiate your search for anything. As Google continues to improve the looks for many of its tools, the Search bar just got a lot better. We first spotted changes coming to the Search bar in an APK teardown, but it appears that some of these changes are now beginning to roll out to more users, according to 9to5Google. The focus of this redesigned Search bar is the custom shortcut. Previously, the Search bar was a simple pill that featured Google's 'G' logo on the left end, and then had the custom shortcut, voice input, and Google Lens buttons on the right. Pretty straightforward, though the shortcut icon might not be the most obvious. But that's changing with the new design that Google is rolling out, starting today. The Search bar is now encapsulated in another elongated pill, which is also more noticeable when you adjust the transparency slider. The 'G' logo is still on the left, but now the Search bar itself only has the voice input and Google Lens buttons on the right. The custom shortcut button has been removed from the search bar and placed adjacent to the bar as it's own standalone button. This makes it easier to notice the shortcut button overall, and is easier to select. In order to set your custom shortcut, you'll have to highlight the Search bar widget and then select the pencil. Then you'll want to enable the Shortcut by selecting it and choosing the action you want to set it to. Your options are: None, Translate (text), Song Search, Weather, Translate (camera), Sports, Dictionary, Homework, Finance, Saved, and News. In our APK teardown that we mentioned, we found that the shortcut button could give you a pop-up menu with all of the available tools, so it served more as a 'Multi Shortcuts' option. However, the redesign that is currently rolling out does not seem to have this multi shortcut menu as an option just yet. It would definitely be more useful than a single action, but we're not certain when this particular feature will be released. But this new Search bar may not be all good news. Those who have grown accustomed to a particular layout with the old widget size may be in for a surprise, as it is now 4×1 instead of 3×1. If you had your app icons in a certain layout, this change may disturb your home screen if you really care about aesthetics. It's exciting to see Google continue to improve its services to be more streamlined and give us more personalization. Hopefully the multi shortcut option isn't too far off, because that would make the Search bar widget way more useful. Why limit yourself to one shortcut when you can have them all? Got a tip?
