Delhi Govt to review welfare schemes to ensure help reaches eligible beneficiaries: CM Rekha Gupta
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Monday announced that all current welfare schemes of the Delhi Government will be reviewed to ensure that only those deserving get help, and directed officials to take steps to improve the implementation of these schemes and ensure transparency and accountability. Gupta also said the process of issuing digital ID cards to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) will start soon. Taking a dig at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regime, Gupta said the former government had cheated the deprived section of society, but her government will not allow such misuse anymore. 'Our aim is to establish a robust, inclusive, and sensitive support system. We will ensure that no deserving individual is left out, and public funds are used responsibly,' the CM said. The chief minister also accused the previous government of consistent fraud and negligence towards Delhi's underprivileged communities. 'Many ineligible individuals benefited from schemes meant for the truly needy,' said Gupta as she alleged there were serious irregularities in the disbursement of widow pensions during the previous administration's tenure. 'Many women who were not eligible were granted pensions unchecked. Our government will not allow such malpractice. Those who are truly eligible will receive financial assistance under all circumstances, but those found ineligible will be excluded from these schemes,' she said Review meeting The CM also held a high-level meeting with officials of the Social Welfare Department and the Department for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The meeting focused on reviewing ongoing schemes designed to uplift economically and socially marginalised communities. Gupta said the government is not only providing financial assistance but also extending support in the form of rehabilitation, skill development, education, and other essential welfare services. Officials said the Delhi chief minister also reviewed several key welfare schemes designed to support vulnerable sections of society. The Financial Assistance for Senior Citizens scheme provides monthly financial aid to individuals aged 60 and above, especially those from SC/ST communities or economically weaker backgrounds. 'Depending on their age, eligible beneficiaries receive between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,500 per month. Over four lakh senior citizens have already benefited from this initiative, which is designed to help them live with dignity,' said an official. Another initiative of the Delhi Government is the Assistance to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), under which individuals with severe disabilities who are unable to support themselves are granted Rs 2,500 per month. So far, around 1.34 lakh people have received this support, which aims to promote their social and economic empowerment. The Delhi Family Benefit Scheme (DFBS) provides a one-time financial assistance of Rs 20,000 to families that have lost their primary breadwinner, said officials. The scheme is currently available to approximately 1,100 dependents, officials said. Additionally, the Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise (SMILE) scheme focuses on rehabilitating individuals involved in begging. It provides essential services, including shelter, medical care, counselling, skill training, and livelihood opportunities, to help them reintegrate into mainstream society with dignity and purpose.

One million trees campaign kicks off at Botanical Gardens
One million trees campaign kicks off at Botanical Gardens The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) recently launched its One Million Trees campaign at the National Botanical Gardens. Led by Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts, various stakeholders attended the July 7 launch. It followed the One Employee, One Tree launch at the DFFE Head Office in April. 'The country has borne the brunt of climate change and the resultant devastation it causes in communities and economies. We have witnessed fires, deadly heatwaves, heavy rains, floods, and prolonged droughts. These events underscore our shared vulnerability, but also our shared responsibility to act, to adapt, and to do so in a way that leaves no one behind,' Swarts said. President Cyril Ramaphosa has directed that 10 million trees, comprising 60% fruit and 40% indigenous, be planted in the country over five years, ending in 2026. Among others, attendees included: – Deputy Minister of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, Mapaseka Steve Letsike – Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Eritrea, HE Mr Salih Omar Abdu – High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, HE Mr Malik Muhammad Farooq – His Majesty Morena Moremoholo Motebang Mopeli of the Bakoena Royal House (Qwaqwa). The DFFE plans to use the campaign to create employment opportunities through tree planting and tackle the high cost of living by integrating fruit trees into food security efforts. 'Tree planting is one of the mitigating factors that are recommended to slow down this environmental threat. It is for this reason that the department is pursuing the co-ordination and implementation of the National Greening Programme,' Swarts stated. She said that if trees that are suitable for a particular area are planted, and we continue working with researchers, the battle against climate change will slowly be won. The DFFE has developed a list of suitable trees that can be planted in different provinces and climate zones. They have also developed a database of nurseries where trees will be sourced through the QR system developed to access the pledge form and the catalogue of the nurseries. Swarts said, 'We have made a provision to accommodate those sponsors who intend to contribute trees. The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has designated spaces to be used as a tree bank, where the donated trees will be stored. 'The donated trees will be stored at the 11 National Botanical Gardens across the country and DFFE nurseries, while we are finalising logistics for the one million trees planting day, September 24. We are dedicating that day to planting trees across the country, as we commemorate Heritage Day.' The department has also identified spaces where trees will survive for generations, and the trees will be planted there. These are areas where most of the requirements to plant and care for trees, such as availability of water, dedicated people to take care of the trees, security or fencing, are met. These include public institutions, early childhood development centres, churches, schools, police stations, clinics, some low-cost housing units, and many other places. To date, a list of sites where trees will be planted has been developed and is being refined as input from stakeholders is gathered. Swarts closed off with a quote from the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Kenyan Wangari Maathai: 'When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and hope.' Court orders month-long psychiatric evaluation for accused in Batu Kawa stone-throwing case
Police personnel escort Bujang to the courtroom. — Photo by Hafizah Abdul Hamid KUCHING (July 11): The Magistrates' Court here today ordered a man with an intellectual disability to undergo a one-month psychiatric evaluation at Hospital Sentosa after he was charged with mischief for allegedly damaging the rear windows of two cars on Jalan Batu Kawa. Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan made the order against Bujang Sanusi, 68, after allowing an application from prosecuting officer ASP Arman Ibrahim for the accused to be sent to the hospital for evaluation. During today's proceedings, Arman also informed the court that Bujang holds a Persons with Disabilities (OKU) card for mental impairment. Mason then allowed the application and set Aug 11 for further mention of the case. Earlier, Bujang nodded in acknowledgment when the two charges, framed under Section 427 of the Penal Code, were read to him, although no plea was recorded. According to the first charge, he allegedly caused damage to the rear window of a Perodua Axia in front of a Jalan Batu Kawa factory on June 2, 2025, at around 2.20am, resulting in an estimated loss of RM250. Under the second charge, he is accused of committing mischief by breaking a window of a Toyota Hiace at the roadside near Kampung Sinar Budi Lama, Jalan Batu Kawa on July 5, 2025, at 7.25pm, causing an estimated loss of RM900. Section 427 of the Penal Code provides for imprisonment of not less than one year and not more than five years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction. It was previously reported that police arrested Bujang on July 7, following a public complaint about an individual throwing stones at vehicles and nearby premises. He was found with several stones, which were seized as evidence. Arman Ibrahim Kuching Magistrates' Court lead Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan
