Musk thanks Trump as special government employee status ‘comes to an end'
Elon Musk expressed gratitude to President Trump in a Wednesday message marking the end of his special government employee status, the latest sign of his declining involvement in the White House. In a post on X, Musk thanked Trump for the opportunity to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a panel focused on dramatically slashing the size of the federal budget and workforce. 'As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,' Musk wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter before he purchased it in 2022. 'The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.' As a special government employee, Musk was limited to 130 days in service to Trump and spent much of the start of the new administration close by the president's side. 'Offboarding begins tonight,' a White House official told NewsNation Wednesday night. Musk made clear during the start of his DOGE tenure that he planned to be a force in politics in some capacity after the end of his official government status. But as Musk and DOGE's mission fell by the wayside to Trump's tax cut package, which is expected to add trillions to the national debt, the tech billionaire has pivoted harder back toward his business empire. 'Back to spending 24/7 at work and sleeping in conference/server/factory rooms,' Musk said Saturday in response to a post on X about the platform's recent outages. 'I must be super focused on X/xAI and Tesla (plus Starship launch next week), as we have critical technologies rolling out,' he added, referring to a launch planned by SpaceX, his space company. Shares of Tesla soared Tuesday in response to Musk's new attention after the market opened following Memorial Day. Later that day, Musk expressed frustration with Trump's major policy bill in a clip of a CBS interview to be aired in full Sunday. 'I was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit … and it undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,' Musk said in a preview of an interview set to air this weekend on 'CBS Sunday Morning.' Trump waived off Musk's criticism when asked about his comments Wednesday, defending the measure while acknowledging it includes provisions he doesn't like, but are necessary to pass Congress. 'We will be negotiating that bill, and I'm not happy about certain aspects of it, but I'm thrilled by other aspects of it,' Trump said. 'That's the way it goes. It's very big, it's the big, beautiful, but the beautiful is because of all the things that we have.' NewsNation is owned by Nexstar Media Group, Inc., which also owns The Hill. TON Under Pressure After Telegram's Pavel Durov Confirms No xAI Deal Was Signed
Telegram and X have not yet actually signed a deal that would bring xAI's Grok to Telegram, despite Telegram's Pavel Durov announcing it earlier Wednesday, putting sell pressure on TON's recent rally. The deal would see Telegram receive 50% of the revenue from xAI subscriptions sold via its platform, along with $300 million in cash and equity as the messaging giant looks to raise $1.5 billion via a bond offering backed by BlackRock, Mubadala, and Citadel, CoinDesk previously reported. "No deal has been signed," xAI CEO Elon Musk posted late Wednesday in response to the Telegram founder's announcement. TON, a token associated with Telegram, dropped from $3.60 to $3.28 in the moments after the tweet. The token had been on a rally in the hours after the announcement, previously up 14% on-day, according to CoinDesk market data. Telegram's Pavel Durov later posted on X that Musk's statement was true. "Agreed in principle, but formalities are pending," he wrote. Elon Musk has a blunt response to Telegram founder's $300M AI deal claim
Telegram founder Pavel Durov said on Tuesday that the chat app had struck a major deal with Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, to bring the Grok chatbot to its billion-plus user base. But Musk quickly poured cold water on the announcement. 'No deal has been signed,' Musk said bluntly on X in response to Durov's video post outlining the partnership. Earlier in the day, Durov had posted: 'This summer, Telegram users will gain access to the best AI technology on the market. Elon Musk and I have agreed to a 1-year partnership to bring xAI's @grok to our billion+ users and integrate it across all Telegram apps"He added that the deal would 'strengthen Telegram's financial sustainability' and claimed xAI would be paying Telegram '$300 million in cash and equity' as part of the agreement. Telegram, he said, would also earn '50% of the revenue from xAI subscriptions purchased through the app.' According to TechCrunch, the deal would expand Grok's reach on Telegram beyond its current availability to premium users, potentially opening it to everyone on the platform. A promotional video shared by Durov showed Grok pinned at the top of chats and accessible via the search bar—mirroring recent Meta AI integrations on Instagram and WhatsApp. The demo also showed Grok generating stickers, summarizing chats and documents, writing replies, and even handling moderation and customer support tasks for businesses. Musk's denial, however, raises questions about the status and structure of the agreement. It's unclear whether the partnership has been formalized or if Durov was announcing a framework that remains under discussion. Neither Telegram nor xAI has issued a follow-up clarification. Telegram inks US$300m deal with Elon Musk's xAI to bring Grok chatbot to one billion users
NEW YORK, May 29 — Telegram established a partnership with Elon Musk's xAI to provide the Grok generative artificial intelligence program on the messaging service for one year, Telegram's CEO announced yesterday. In exchange for implementing Grok across its platforms, Telegram will receive US$300 million (RM1.28 million) in cash and equity, plus 50 percent of the revenue from xAI subscriptions sold via Telegram, Telegram's chief Pavel Durov announced on X, the former Twitter. Grok will be accessible on Telegram this summer, Durov said. The terms of the deal may appear unbalanced, but the transaction allows xAI, which in late March acquired Musk's X platform, to have access to Telegram's customers, which Durov estimated has more than one billion users. Generative AI businesses have been aiming to grow their user base in order to recover revenues after huge investments in the state-of-the-art technology. xAI in February released the latest version of its chatbot, Grok 3, which the billionaire hopes will find traction in a highly competitive sector contested by the likes of ChatGPT and China's DeepSeek. Grok 3 is also going up against OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT — pitting Musk against collaborator-turned-arch rival Sam Altman. Grok is accessible on the X platform, but with limitations on non-paying users. The premium service costs US$40 per month, or US$395 per year. Durov has faced judicial action in France after clashing with French authorities over illegal content on his popular messaging service, including claims that France interfered in Romanian elections. Earlier this month, French authorities denied a request for Durov, who holds French and Russian passports, to travel to the United States for talks with investment funds. — AFP
