All-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class lands in Singapore with a fully electric version, Lifestyle News

The latest iteration of Mercedes-Benz's legendary G-Class SUV has landed in Singapore, and for the first time, there is a fully electric version available. The new G-Class range was unveiled to the public at G-Haus, a pop-up event held at Gillman Barracks from August 1 to 3. Aside from checking out the new G-Class, visitors could also enjoy artisanal coffee and bites at the G-Cafe by ÁTIPICO, as well as shop for Mercedes-Benz merchandise at the G-Haus Boutique. The main highlights were the cars though, and Mercedes-Benz presented the three versions of the G-Class that it will be offering for sale here: the classic G500, the electric G580, and the high-performance G63 AMG. While officially regarded as a new generation, the design of the G-Class remains fundamentally unchanged from its origin predecessor, the military-use G-Wagen from 1979. That means the same boxy styling, and rugged details like the exposed door hinges and externally-mounted spare wheel at the rear. Mercedes-Benz has even made sure that the doors make the same sound as before when they are opened or closed, such is their attention to detail in keeping the G-Class faithful to its roots. The interior however has been completely modernised, and comes with the latest luxury trappings that one would expect from a high-end Mercedes-Benz. These include Nappa leather upholstery, haptic button controls on the steering wheel, and a premium Burmester 3D surround sound audio system. The G-Class also gets the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) operating system software for the first time, which incorporates the 'Hey Mercedes' voice assistant. The system, along with the infotainment controls, are accessed via the 12.3-inch touchscreen, which is combined with the 12.3-inch driver instrument display to look like one seamless large screen. The G-Class range starts with the G500, which features a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six petrol engine that produces 443hp and 560Nm of torque. It also comes with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which includes an integrated starter-generator that produces an additional 20bhp and 200Nm of torque. As a result, the G500 can go from 0-100km/h in a brisk 5.4 seconds. Meanwhile, the G580 with EQ Technology, as it is officially called, marks the first time that Mercedes-Benz has introduced an electric drivetrain to the G-Class. Its unique setup of having four electric motors, one at each wheel, means that the car is capable of stunts like being able to spin around in a circle to get out of tight spots, a move that Mercedes-Benz calls the G-Turn. The four motors combine to produce a total of 579hp and a colossal 1,164Nm of torque, allowing it to go from 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds. Other neat tricks that the G580 can perform include G-Steering, which can control the torque sent to each individual wheel, allowing it to perform tight turns, and Intelligent Offroad Crawl, which allows, among other things, the car to go up a 45-degree slope in reverse with minimal driver input. Performance fanatics would probably gravitate towards the G63 AMG, which boasts a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 577hp and 850Nm of torque, allowing it to go from 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds. It also comes with the usual AMG sporty bits, like a unique grille and bumper design, big wheels and AMG badges everywhere. All three G-Class variants are now available for sale, with the G500 and G580 both retailing at the same price of $782,888 inclusive of COE (as of August 2025). The G63 AMG meanwhile has a starting price of $1,062,888 with COE, before any options are added. [[nid:717011]] No part of this article can be reproduced without permission from AsiaOne.
