Clashes resume in Suwayda hours after ceasefire

Shafaq News – Damascus Fighting resumed in Suwayda on Saturday, just hours after the Presidency declared a full and immediate ceasefire, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. According to the Observatory, clashes broke out in the city's western neighborhoods between Druze fighters and Bedouin tribal gunmen, in violation of the internationally backed truce. #المرصد_السوري الاشـ ـتـ ـبـ ـاكـ ـات تتواصل في مدينة #السويداء وسط انهيار اتفاق وقف إطلاق الـ ـنـ ـار وتقدم للمجموعات الـ ـمـ ـسـ ـلـ ـحـ ـة نحو الأحياء السكنية — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) July 19, 2025 Meanwhile, Syrian security forces had begun deploying around Suwayda as part of the agreement's first phase, which calls for separating combatants, releasing detainees, and removing roadblocks. State media said a second phase will see the formation of a crisis committee to expedite humanitarian aid, restore services, and repair infrastructure, while a third phase will gradually reinstate state institutions and internal security across the province. Clashes between Druze armed factions and Bedouin tribes had rapidly intensified after initial truce efforts failed, resulting in at least 940 deaths, according to the Observatory.

Syria announces new ceasefire in Suwayda

Shafaq News – Damascus On Saturday, the Syrian Presidency announced a ceasefire in Suwayda following a week of intense clashes that left hundreds dead and displaced many more. In a statement, the Presidency said security forces had begun deploying across the province to 'ensure the implementation' of the agreement. The deal allows for the return of state institutions and security forces to Suwayda, while requiring local fighters to disarm and integrate into official agencies. Individuals responsible for violations on either side will face prosecution, and those unwilling to accept the terms may exit the province through a safe corridor. It also pledges future political inclusion for the Druze, who—despite nominal roles in national politics—remain politically underrepresented and wield little influence in Damascus. Prior to the announcement, the Druze spiritual leadership called for an immediate end to the violence and urged all parties to prioritize 'unity, reason, and restraint.'

Suwayda death toll reaches 248 as clashes rage

Shafaq News – Suwayda Heavy shelling and street battles have plunged the southern Syrian city of Suwayda into a deepening humanitarian emergency, with at least 248 people killed since fighting erupted on July 13, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Wednesday. The violence—pitting Druze factions against Bedouin gunmen and Syrian government forces—has spiraled despite a declared truce, which quickly collapsed as fighting resumed across several districts. According to SOHR, regime troops bombarded Suwayda and neighboring Sahwat al-Balat overnight with artillery, mortars, and drones, hitting civilian areas and knocking out electricity and internet services. Key infrastructure remains crippled, exacerbating already dire conditions. #المرصد_السوري لحقوق الإنسان يُناشد بفتح معابر إنسانية عاجلة تتيح للمدنيين مغادرة مناطق القصف في ظل التعتيم الإعلامي المتواصل وانقطاع شبكتي الكهرباء والإنترنت عن مختلف مناطق المحافظة — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) July 16, 2025 Battles raged near Suwayda National Hospital, where medical teams have been working for over 72 hours without power or proper supplies, while snipers positioned along the Citadel–Tishreen Square corridor have cut off access to the facility, the watchdog cautioned. The Observatory documented 71 civilian deaths—including four children and two women—alongside 156 government-aligned fighters, including 18 Bedouin combatants, with an additional 21 people reportedly executed by units linked to Syria's Defense and Interior Ministries. Tishreen Square remains a focal point, with ongoing sniper fire and gun battles, SOHR reported, pointing to government trucks leaving the area loaded with personal belongings. The escalation follows recent Israeli airstrikes on Suwayda and its outskirts. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Damascus, demanding regime forces withdraw from Druze-majority areas. الطيران #الإسرائيلي يـ ـسـ ـتـ ـهـ ـدف آلية عسكرية بـ #السويداء — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) July 16, 2025 'Israel will not abandon the Druze community and will enforce our demilitarization policy,' he declared, adding that Tel Aviv would continue targeting regime positions and would escalate operations if Damascus fails to comply.

Syria's Sweida fighting leaves over 60 casualties

Shafaq News – Damascus At least 60 people were killed or wounded in armed clashes between Druze fighters and Bedouin tribesmen in Syria's southern Sweida province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Sunday. The violence erupted in al-Muqawwas neighborhood and spread to nearby areas as both sides exchanged gunfire and shelling. The Observatory confirmed that 17 Druze and 4 Bedouins were dead, while 50 others—including children and several in critical condition—were injured. وارتفاع عدد القـ ـتـ ـلى إلى 21 شخصا — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) July 13, 2025 Stemming from a spiral of retaliation, the escalation began after armed tribesmen allegedly beat, robbed, and abandoned a Druze youth near al-Masmiyya. In response, Druze fighters abducted tribal members, prompting counter-seizures and a blockade of the Damascus–Sweida highway. Similar clashes in April and May between Druze groups and security forces left dozens dead and led to de-escalation agreements aimed at integrating local fighters into state structures. In a separate incident in Damascus, unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle fatally shot a 60-year-old man from the Alawite community—the sect to which ousted President Bashar al-Assad belongs. مقـ ـتل سائق سيارة في العاصمة #دمشق — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) July 13, 2025 According to SOHR, at least 857 people—813 men, 29 women, and 15 children—have been killed across Syria since the start of 2025 in sectarian-driven assassinations.

Alawite teen killed at checkpoint as sectarian violence surges in Syria

Shafaq News/ An 18-year-old Alawite man was shot dead at an armed group checkpoint in the town of Shin, west of Homs, on Wednesday, as Syria faces a sharp rise in sectarian killings and abductions following the collapse of al-Assad regime. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the teenager was riding to work with a companion on a motorcycle when they were stopped by gunmen affiliated with pro-government factions tied to the defense and interior ministries. The assailants questioned the pair about their sect before executing one and briefly detaining the other. The body remained at the scene for hours before their ID cards were found near the local police station. إعـ ـدام شابين أحدهما في #حمص والآخر في #حماة — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) June 11, 2025 The killing is one of several violent incidents reported in recent days. In rural Hama, a young shopkeeper was gunned down in his store in the village of Turkmen Musa by two masked men on a motorcycle. Despite a heavy security presence in the area, the attackers escaped, raising suspicions of insider involvement. استشهاد مدني بـ ـرصـ ـاص عـ ـصـ ـابـ ـة مـ ـسـ ـلّـ ـحـ ـة في ريف #مصياف — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) June 11, 2025 Meanwhile, factions known as 'Hamzat' and 'Amshat' abducted three displaced Kurdish men from Afrin while they were traveling from Qamishli to Aleppo. The men were accused of links to the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration. They are originally from Jindires, Sharran, and Khirbat Sharran. القوة المشتركة تـ ـخـ ـتـ ـطـ ـف 3 مواطنين كرد في ريف #حلب — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) June 11, 2025 In a separate case, the same faction kidnapped a fourth Kurdish man from the village of Ali Baku in northern Aleppo. He had returned from Iraq to visit family when he was seized near Deir Hafer. His fate remains unknown.
