Municipal Elections Kicked off in South and Nabatieh Governorates
The fourth and final round of Lebanon's municipal and optional elections kicked off today in the southern and Nabatieh governorates, with voters heading to the polls despite Israeli attacks and a significant number of towns already decided by acclamation. Polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m., with early figures from the Ministry of Interior showing modest but growing turnout by mid-morning: Jezzine led at 7.32%, followed by Hasbaya (4.56%), Marjayoun (3.47%), Bint Jbeil (3.00%), Nabatieh (4.15%), Tyre (4.23%), and Saida (4.94%). President Aoun From the Sidon Serail, President Joseph Aoun paid tribute to the souls of the martyrs on this day, saluting the work of the security and judicial apparatuses, and everyone who contributed and is contributing to the successful electoral process. Aoun called on everyone to vote in large numbers for those who represent their aspirations for the city's development. The elections in the south confirm that the will to live is stronger than death, and the will to build is stronger than destruction. بالفيديو | لحظة وصول رئيس الجمهورية اللبنانية #جوزاف_عون إلى سراي مدينة #النبطية في #جنوب_لبنان — قناة المنار (@TVManar1) May 24, 2025 From the Nabatieh Seraya, he said: 'Participating in building the town and building tomorrow's Lebanon for the next generation is a duty and a responsibility. I congratulate those who won by acclamation, and I congratulate in advance those who will win at the ballot box. The position is not a privilege, but a responsibility, and you must live up to the trust, serving the people of your village with sincerity and dedication.' President Aoun cast his vote in his hometown of Aishiyeh to elect a mayor after the municipality won unopposed. He said, 'Whoever wins will represent me,' and called on citizens to 'vote in large numbers in all areas of the South and Nabatieh governorates.' A Vote of Resilience Against the backdrop of lingering instability, approximately 122 municipalities in the south had already been decided by consensus—largely between the Hezbollah-Amal alliance or local family agreements—before election day. Yet, voters still turned out in force, defying challenges to participate in what many see as a critical step toward rebuilding their communities. From Sidon's Serail, Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi praised the electoral process, honoring the martyrs of the south and commending security forces for ensuring a smooth vote. 'The will to build is stronger than destruction,' he declared, urging citizens to cast their ballots for candidates who truly represent their aspirations. Hotly Contested Races In Saida, 69,474 eligible voters faced a crowded field, with five competitive lists vying for seats, including 'Pulse of the Country', 'Saida Badha', and 'Sawa for Saida.' Meanwhile, Tyre saw an influx of voters returning from Beirut to support lists backed by national political alliances. In Nabatieh, Israeli drones buzzed overhead as residents cast their votes, with Governor Dr. Huwaida al-Turk overseeing operations. Remarkably, 18 of 36 municipalities in Bint Jbeil district were won by acclamation, but competitive races persisted in villages like Ramieh, Tibnin, and Ain Ebel.

Arab Leaders Gather in Baghdad as Gaza Crisis Looms Over 34th League Summit
Arab leaders convened in Baghdad on Saturday for the 34th Arab League Summit against the backdrop of escalating Israeli aggression in Gaza and growing regional tensions following US President Donald Trump's controversial Gulf tour. The high-profile gathering has drawn participation from across the Arab world, with notable attendees including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who has emerged as one of Israel's most vocal European critics since Spain's recognition of Palestine last year. بالصورة | الوفود العربية والأجنبية تتقاطر إلى #بغداد للمشاركة في القمة العربية — قناة المنار (@TVManar1) May 17, 2025 Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Baghdad Friday, while diplomatic sources indicated most Gulf states opted for ministerial-level representation rather than head-of-state attendance. 'The summit will address a comprehensive initiative to halt the Gaza war, reconstruction efforts, and humanitarian aid,' explained Ihsan al-Shammari, strategic studies professor at the University of Baghdad. 'Supporting Syria's transition and Lebanon's new government are also key agenda items.' Baghdad meeting follows March's emergency Cairo summit, which established a Gaza reconstruction framework positioning the Palestinian Authority as an alternative to Trump's controversial proposal for US control of the territory. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed the Baghdad summit 'will uphold' these earlier decisions. Al-Shammari highlighted the summit's 'unique nature' amid Israel's May 5 announcement of plans to 'occupy' Gaza and forcibly displace its population internally. During his recent Gulf tour, Trump declared from Doha, 'I would be proud if the United States owned Gaza and turned it into a zone of freedom.' Syria's transitional leadership will be represented by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani rather than interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa, whose potential attendance faced political objections within Iraq. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam Prime Minister Nawaf Salam arrived in Baghdad yesterday, Friday, at the head of an official delegation to participate in the Arab Summit. He was accompanied on his visit by Foreign Minister Youssef Raji and Economy Minister Amer Basat. The Lebanese delegation was received by Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, along with the Secretary-General of the Iraqi Council of Ministers, Hamid al-Ghazi. Hussein welcomed Prime Minister Salam, noting the importance of this visit in strengthening relations between Lebanon and Iraq and the 'vital role of the summit in strengthening Arab solidarity and joint action.' He emphasized that 'the summit is being held in Baghdad under exceptional circumstances that call for unified efforts to achieve security, stability, and sustainable development.' For his part, Salam expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome, praising Baghdad's 'historic role in uniting Arab nations and building bridges of cooperation between our brothers,' and emphasizing the importance of strengthening Arab coordination 'to confront current issues and common challenges.'

Deadly Israeli Drone Strike Hits South Lebanon, Violating Ceasefire
In a blatant breach of the ceasefire agreement, an Israeli drone strike killed a civilian in southern Lebanon early on Thursday. The attack occurred in the town of Ma'roub, when an Israeli drone fired a missile at a car, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The ministry confirmed that one person was martyred in the strike, which targeted a vehicle in the Tyre district of south Lebanon. This latest incident marks another grave violation of the ceasefire agreement, despite Lebanon's full commitment to the agreement's terms. Just days earlier, on Monday, another Israeli drone strike had hit a car in the southern Lebanese town of Qaaqaait al-Jisr. بالصورة | السيارة التي قصفتها طائرة مسيرة للاحتلال في معروب جنوب لبنان — قناة المنار (@TVManar1) March 26, 2025 Israeli occupation forces launched a series of airstrikes and shelled several towns in the region on March 22. These attacks resulted in the deaths and injuries of several civilians in southern Lebanon, while also targeting eastern Lebanon. Prior to these escalations, blatant Israeli violations had been ongoing, namely targeted and sporadic strikes that undermined Lebanese sovereignty. These violations included repeated incursions into Lebanese airspace and the occupation of points along the Lebanon-Palestine border. Israeli occupation authorities claimed the latest bombing campaign was in response to the launching of five rockets toward the Metulla settlement on the border. However, the Lebanese army discovered and seized primitive rocket launchers in the area, while Hezbollah denied responsibility for the attack. A ceasefire agreement was originally reached on November 27, 2024, following a brutal Israeli assault on Lebanon. The deal guaranteed a full Israeli withdrawal by late January 2025, later extended to mid-February, but Israeli forces continue to occupy border regions and launch attacks on civilians and the Lebanese military.

For his part, the former minister Mustafa Bayram hailed the sacrifices of the martyrs who sustained the national dignity, adding that the Resistance may never be weakened. The enemy planned to crush the resistance that steadfastly fought and made heavy sacrifices in order to confront the aggression, Bayram added. Head of Hezbollah Juristic Council Sheikh Mohammad Yazbek deplored the absence of the state officials from the funeral of the 130 martyrs in Aitaroun and Aita Al-Shaab. Addressing Hezbollah ceremony of receiving condolences on the martyrdom of Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah and Sayyed Hashem Safieddine in Baalbek City, Sheikh Yazbek underscored rejection of any intention to naturalize ties with the Zionist entity at whatever cost.
