[김대균의 영어산책] 필자가 지난 도쿄여행에서 만난 일본 인기 토익강사 Koji Hayakawa (Jay)가 소개하는 일본의 컴퓨터 토익 시험과 최신 토익기출 단어 정리

I'm honored to have the opportunity to write this article for The Korea Herald. I've been teaching TOEIC for nearly 20 years and have published close to 60 TOEIC-related books. During a conversation and broadcast with Mr. Kim Daekyun in February, I noticed some interesting pronunciation similarities between Korean and Japanese words—such as 'subscriber' and 'free consultation.' We also discussed several key differences in how the TOEIC test is approached in Korea versus Japan. For example, Korea offers more test dates annually than Japan. In Korea, it is common for employers or institutions to require TOEIC Speaking scores in addition to the Listening & Reading scores. In contrast, speaking requirements are rare in Japan. Perhaps the most significant difference is the availability of an online version of the TOEIC test. Online TOEIC in Japan In Japan, there is an online TOEIC Listening & Reading test known as the Institutional Program. This version is designed exclusively for corporate and educational use. It contains fewer questions—90 in total (45 Listening and 45 Reading)—and the test duration is significantly shorter, at approximately 62 minutes. How is this possible? Interestingly, this test uses a Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) format, which means the difficulty level of questions in Unit Two depends on the test-taker's performance in Unit One. Unit One contains 25 questions, and Unit Two contains 20. The adaptive format allows the test to be shorter while still maintaining score accuracy. Scores are reported on the same 10–990 scale used for the traditional paper-based TOEIC test, and results are displayed immediately after the test. However, unlike the paper version, a detailed score report with 'Abilities Measured' is not issued. One major advantage is the flexibility: test-takers don't need to visit a testing center. The online test can be taken from home, 24 hours a day, during the designated testing window. I've taken the TOEIC Listening & Reading test nearly every time it has been held—more than 180 times in total. While I can't match Mr. Kim, who has taken the test over 500 times, I may still be one of the most frequent TOEIC test-takers in Japan. I'd like to share a few vocabulary words that recently appeared on a TOEIC test in Japan: deluge of... = ~이 쇄도함, 대량의 ~ There was a deluge of orders during the holiday season. → 연말 시즌 동안 주문이 쇄도했다. procure = 획득하다, 입수하다 We worked hard to procure a contract with the supplier. → 우리는 공급업체와의 계약을 따내기 위해 열심히 노력했다. delve into = 파고들다, 철저히 조사하다 We need to delve into the reasons for the recent drop in sales. → 최근 매출 하락의 원인을 철저히 조사할 필요가 있다. immerse = 몰두하다, 몰입하다 She was immersed in preparing for the international conference. → 그녀는 국제 회의를 준비하는 데 몰두하고 있었다. exhilarating = 짜릿한, 아주 신나는 Working on a global project was an exhilarating experience. → 글로벌 프로젝트에 참여한 것은 짜릿한 경험이었다. Koji Hayakawa (Jay) 코리아헤럴드에 기고할 수 있는 기회를 얻게 되어 매우 영광입니다. 저는 TOEIC을 가르친 지 거의 20년이 되었고, 지금까지 TOEIC 관련 서적을 약 60권 출간했습니다. 지난 2월, 김대균 선생님과의 대화 및 방송을 통해 'subscriber(구독자)', 'free consultation(무료 상담)'과 같은 단어들이 한국어와 일본어 발음에서 유사한 점이 있다는 흥미로운 사실을 발견했습니다. 또, 한국과 일본에서 TOEIC 시험을 준비하고 활용하는 방식의 여러 가지 차이점에 대해서도 이야기 나눴습니다. 예를 들어, 한국은 일본보다 연간 시험 횟수가 더 많습니다. 한국에서는 Listening & Reading 점수뿐만 아니라 Speaking 점수를 함께 요구하는 경우가 많지만, 일본에서는 Speaking 점수가 요구되는 경우가 드뭅니다. 아마도 가장 큰 차이점은 온라인 TOEIC 시험의 제공 여부일 것입니다. 일본의 온라인 TOEIC 일본에는 Institutional Program이라는 이름의 온라인 TOEIC Listening & Reading 시험이 존재합니다. 이 버전은 기업 및 교육 기관 전용으로 설계되어 있으며, 문항 수는 총 90문항(듣기 45문항, 읽기 45문항)으로 기존 시험보다 적고, 시험 시간도 약 62분으로 훨씬 짧습니다. 어떻게 이런 구성이 가능할까요? 이 시험은 컴퓨터 적응형 시험(CAT, Computer Adaptive Testing) 방식을 채택하고 있습니다. 즉, 두 번째 유닛(Unit 2)의 문제 난이도는 첫 번째 유닛(Unit 1)에서의 응시자 성과에 따라 조정됩니다. 유닛 1에는 25문항, 유닛 2에는 20문항이 포함되어 있습니다. 이러한 방식 덕분에 시험 시간이 짧더라도 신뢰도 높은 점수 산출이 가능합니다. 점수는 기존 지필 시험과 동일하게 10점부터 990점까지의 범위로 제공되며, 시험 직후 즉시 확인할 수 있습니다. 다만, 지필 시험과는 달리 'Abilities Measured'(측정된 능력) 항목이 포함된 상세 성적표는 제공되지 않습니다.
