Defense R&D generates W697tr in economic value: defense agency
South Korea's state-run Agency for Defense Development announced Monday that its research and development activities have generated an estimated economic impact of 697 trillion won ($504 billion) over the 55 years since its founding in 1970. According to the report, the country has invested approximately 65 trillion won in the institute for defense-related research and development. The resulting impact includes reduced dependence on foreign weapons systems, enhanced operational readiness, lower societal development costs and technology spillover effects. The institute also estimated that its activities have created around 380,000 jobs in related industries. Since its founding, ADD has developed 303 weapon systems, 146 of which have been adopted by the South Korean military. Among its most notable achievements are the Cheongung II medium-range surface-to-air missile and the K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer — South Korea's top two arms exports — both developed under ADD's leadership. In 2024, according to a separate report by the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement, South Korea ranked eighth globally in terms of overall defense science and technology capabilities. In the same year, its investment in defense-related research reached $3.68 billion, placing it fourth worldwide. Since 2008, South Korea has signed defense export contracts totaling approximately 60 trillion won with over 23 countries. During that period, ADD said it contributed directly to 32 of the exported items. 'Defense technology development has not only strengthened national security but also made significant contributions to the national economy and scientific advancement,' said ADD President Lee Geon-wan. 'We will continue to play a leading role not only in defense, but also in driving economic and technological progress.'

Coronation Street star Kimberly Hart-Simpson shares diagnosis
Former Coronation Street star Kimberly Hart-Simpson, best known to soap fans as sex worker Nicky Wheatley, shared her ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) diagnosis on her Instagram yesterday. Nicky wrote that she was diagnosed eight months ago, but decided to keep quiet, initially wanting to 'untangle 38 years worth of WTF' and because the internet can be 'very, very harsh'. She further explained: 'I come from a generation where this wasn't really an open conversation or a comfortable label. 'So when i found out I did the classic reaction of run a marathon / go to Thailand on your own / start a million new side projects. I would say running was the most exposing time for me – but also gave me the space to really understand myself.' Contemplating her future following her diagnosis, Kimberly said: 'I am actually happy I have received the diagnosis I did, it's helpful for me. I am not sure what I will do with the knowledge just yet… I mean I haven't just developed it, I have clearly had it all my life, but I have only just admitted it, so its going to be a process.' Kimberly's post was flooded with comments of support. Former Corrie co-stars Bhavna Limbachia, who played Rana Habeeb, left a string of heart emoji's, while Jack James Ryan, known to fans as Jacob Hay, followed suit with some heart emoji's of his own. One fan commented: 'I got diagnosed at 38 years too. It was a 'who am I' moment too'. NHS describes ADHD as 'a condition that affects people's behaviour. People with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating, and may act on impulse.' Is it often diagnosed in childhood, but in some cases isn't recognised until adulthood. 'Research has also identified a number of possible differences in the brains of people with ADHD when compared with those without the condition. For children, treatments include 'appropriate educational support, advice and support for parents and affected children, alongside medicine, if necessary.' For adults, 'medicine is often the first treatment offered, although psychological therapies may also help.' Another added: 'I found out in school that I have ADD and Asperger's, although it doesn't define my life it did help me find out why I acted certain ways that were deemed strange to others. Definitely a good thing to be diagnosed with it. I think you will have a much easier time now that you have found out.' 'Mate, it took me about 6 months or so for my diagnosis to settle in with me too. That was 6 years ago, almost, and l'm so glad 1 got my diagnosis and find it helpful just knowing. Loads of love xx' said another fan. Kimberly's Corrie character Nicky was initially introduced as an escort, employed by Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) as he struggled to process his the loss of his wife Sinead Tinker's (Katie McGlynn) following her battle with cervical cancer. Daniel began paying Nicky to dress in his late wife's clothes as he wrestled with his grief, leading to a complex relationship between the two. Why are Chemplast Sanmar shares falling over 2% today? Explained
By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on July 29, 2025, 09:24 IST Shares of Chemplast Sanmar Ltd fell 1.9% to ₹422.70 on Tuesday after the company reported a net loss of ₹64 crore for the quarter ended June 2025 (Q1FY26), compared to a net profit of ₹24 crore in the same period last year. Revenue declined marginally to ₹1,100 crore from ₹1,145 crore in Q1FY25, as the company grappled with a challenging market environment and continued pricing pressures. 'The industry faced continued pricing pressure during the quarter due to persistent dumping of Paste PVC and Suspension PVC,' said Ramkumar Shankar, Managing Director of Chemplast Sanmar. He noted that although anti-dumping duties (ADD) are in place for several countries, there has been a significant inflow of dumped materials from the EU and Japan, prompting a fresh ADD investigation by DGTR. Despite the loss, Shankar maintained a positive outlook, citing healthy product pipeline in the Custom Manufactured Chemicals Division and robust demand for PVC products. 'We have used this tough period to build capacity in our speciality businesses, which will act as a springboard for future growth,' he added.
