RFK Jr. claims food stamps are fueling diabetes epidemic, wants to block their use for soda, candy

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed food stamps are fueling diabetes – as he called Sunday to block the taxpayer-funded welfare program for being used to buy soda and candies. 'Taxpayers should not be financing that,' Kennedy said on the 'Cats Roundtable' on WABC 770 AM radio. He said 18% of federal food stamps to poor families is spent 'on candy and sugared drinks' even as nearly 40% of children now have juvenile diabetes. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed that food stamps are fueling the rise in diabetes. Photo by SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images 'We are actually paying for people to get diabetes,' RFK told host John Catsimatidis. Sugary and fatty foods also contribute to obesity. American taxpayers are paying twice, RFK said — beginning with funding the purchase of food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The program issues electronic benefits that can be used like cash to purchase food. 'We're paying again when they get [treated] through Medicaid and, ultimately, Medicare. We are poisoning them with sugars and ultra-processed food,' RFK said. Kennedy called on SNAP recipients to be barred from using it to pay for things like soda or candy. Christopher Sadowski SNAP helps low-income working people, senior citizens, the disabled and others feed their families. Eligibility and benefit levels are based on household size, income and other factors. Kennedy said the Trump administration is making headway, noting that 14 states have signed waivers that restrict the purchase of non-nutritious items like soda and candy. 'These waivers are a key step in ensuring that taxpayer dollars provide nutritious options that improve health outcomes within SNAP,' the US Dept. of Agriculture said.

All Stars. ‌ The 46-year-old former footballer is said to be returning to the jungle alongside a number of other former I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! contestants from previous years and the ex-Soccer AM host will be hoping to do better than his original stint in 2014, when he was the first campmate to be voted off. ‌ A source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "Jimmy had a brilliant time in the original series he took part in and it really opened the door to his broadcasting career. ‌ "He was voted off first last time and he felt he had a lot more to give. "Now he's got the chance to get stuck in again, although he's a bit older so he is worried he might find it harder to rough it. "His banter is still on top form though. Producers are hopeful he'll have a bromance with Harry Redknapp, who is also taking part." ‌ As well as Jimmy and 2018 King of the Jungle Harry Redknapp, The Only Way Is Essex star Gemma Collins - who lasted only three days in the jungle when she took part in the 2014 edition of the programme - and 2016's third-placed Adam Thomas are also set to take part. Adam memorably took part in a record 12 Bushtucker Trials during his time in the Australian jungle and returned to present the companion series I'm A Celebrity: Extra Camp with Joel Dommett and Emily Atack in 2019. A source told The Sun newspaper of his decision to sign up for All Stars: "This will be a glorious return for Adam as he established himself as a true fan favourite through his series in camp and then on the spin-off show. ‌ "He's stayed in the limelight, too, with Waterloo Road and then on ITV alongside brother Ryan with challenge show 99 To Beat. "It's the perfect time for him to head back into the jungle and affirm his position as Mr Bushtucker Trial." The first legends series aired in 2023 and saw the returns of former campmates Myleene Klass, Helen Flanagan and Jordan Banjo. "We're very excited about bringing back campmates from over the years in a brand-new setting in South Africa."

Loni Anderson cause of death: WKRP in Cincinnati actress dies aged 79 after ‘long illness'

Beloved 80s icon and TV star Loni Anderson, and ex-wife of actor Burt Reynolds, has passed away at 79, just days before her 80th birthday. Anderson, who played an empowered receptionist at the struggling AM radio station in the TV series WKRP in Cincinnati, was formally married to star Burt Reynolds, with the two having a high-profile relationship from the mid-80s to mid 90s. Anderson died at a Los Angeles hospital following a 'prolonged' illness, her longtime publicist, Cheryl J Kagan, said, confirming the news. 'We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother,' Anderson's family said in a statement. WKRP in Cincinnati aired from 1978 to 1982 and was set in a lagging Ohio radio station trying to reinvent itself with rock music. Anderson's role was seen as groundbreaking, credited for her portrayal as a smart, stylish scene-stealing actor. Although the show was critically acclaimed, it was eventually cancelled due to struggling ratings. The cast included Gary Sandy, Tim Reid, Howard Hesseman, Frank Bonner and Jan Smithers, alongside Anderson as the sexy and smart Jennifer Marlowe. As the station's receptionist, the blonde and high-heeled Jennifer used her sex appeal to deflect unwanted business calls for her boss, Mr Carlson. Her efficiency often kept the station running in the face of others' incompetence. The role earned her two Emmy Award and three Golden Globe nominations. Before WKRP in Cincinnati was cancelled, Anderson starred in the TV film The Jayne Mansfield Story in 1980. Acting alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played the bodybuilding husband Mickey Hargitay, the film received a mixed response, now eternally remembered as one of 'the 100 most enjoyable bad movies ever made' by The Official Razzie Movie Guide, listed in the book by Golden Raspberry Award founder John Wilson. Anderson was likened to Marilyn Monroe and Farrah Fawcett in the height of her career. Anderson starred on the big screen alongside Burt Reynolds in the 1983 comedy Stroker Ace and the two later married and became tabloid fixtures before divorcing in 1994. Their son, Quinton Reynolds, was 'the best decision that we ever made in our entire relationship', she said during the unveiling of a bronze bust at Reynolds' Hollywood grave site in 2021. 'I think back to the beginning of our relationship, it was so, oh, gosh, tabloidy,' Anderson told The Associated Press. 'We were just a spectacle all the time. And it was hard to have a relationship in that atmosphere. And somehow, we did it through many ups and downs.' Anderson detailed their tumultuous marriage in the 1995 autobiography, My Life in High Heels, which she said was about 'the growth of a woman, a woman who survives'. 'I think if you're going to write about yourself, you have to do it warts and all,' Anderson told the AP while promoting the book. 'You may not even tell the nicest things about yourself, because you're telling the truth.' She married four times, most recently to Bob Flick in 2008. Anderson was born August 5, 1945, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Her father was an environmental chemist and her mother was a model. Her first role as an actress was a small part in the 1966 film Nevada Smith, starring Steve McQueen. Most of her career was spent on the small screen with early guest parts in the 1970s on S.W.A.T. and Police Woman. After WKRP, Anderson starred in the short-lived comedy series Easy Street and appeared in made-for-TV movies including A Letter to Three Wives and White Hot: The Mysterious Murder of Thelma Todd. In 2023 she co-starred in Lifetime's Ladies Of The 80s: A Divas Christmas, with Linda Gray, Donna Mills, Morgan Fairchild and Nicollette Sheridan. 'I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of the wonderful Loni Anderson!' Fairchild wrote on X. 'The sweetest, most gracious lady! I'm just devastated to hear this.' Anderson is survived by Flick, her daughter Deidra and son-in law Charlie Hoffman, son Quinton Anderson Reynolds, grandchildren McKenzie and Megan Hoffman, stepson Adam Flick and wife Helene, and step-grandchildren Felix and Maximilian. A private family service is planned at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Kagan said. - with AP

RM13 million agreements to develop the agri sector

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 Text Size: Arthur (centre) with signatories involved in the signing of agreements. KOTA KINABALU: A total of RM13 million in agreements were sealed through three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in an effort to develop the agriculture sector and enhance the country's food security. The MoUs were signed between the Keningau Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK Keningau) and Absolute Moringa Sdn Bhd (AM), the Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) and Desa Keningau Livestock Industries Sdn Bhd (DKLI), and between LPP and Sawit Kinabalu Farm Products Sdn Bhd (SKFP). Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the first agreement, worth RM10 million, involves collaboration between PPK Keningau and AM in marketing and distributing agricultural inputs to empower the business and supply services of farmers' organisations for both members and non-members in Sabah. The second agreement, valued at RM3 million, was signed between LPP and DKLI to carry out a corn grain planting project, aimed at boosting local corn production through a corporate approach and technology transfer. 'I was informed the project will begin soon. It has long-term impact, particularly in reducing our dependency on imported corn grain used as livestock feed, which would indirectly increase supply and lower farming costs. 'The third MoU between LPP and SKFP involves technical cooperation for the implementation of an integrated oil palm-cattle breeding project. 'Although the project has no monetary value, it serves to optimise land use for integrated livestock farming under several high-impact initiatives,' he said after the MoU ceremony involving LPP in conjunction with the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day celebration. Arthur said the collaborations are expected to bring significant benefits, especially to local communities. 'These high-impact projects reflect strong cooperation between the Government and private sector in driving agricultural growth and enhancing food security. 'At the same time, by increasing the production of resources like corn grain, we can reduce import dependency, improve economic outcomes and make livestock farming more accessible and cost-effective for local farmers,' he added. He said the Government-private sector partnerships are important to ensure that the economic spillover reaches nearby communities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
