Ready for Apple Glasses? Apple Is Expected to Launch More Tech for Your Eyes

The smart glasses market is growing fast, and Apple is expected to jump into the space soon. Respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a report this week saying Apple is working on seven different types of head-mounted AR and VR products, including a pair of smart glasses and a lighter Vision Pro for 2027. For this week's episode of One More Thing (embedded above), I break down the timeline of what Apple could be releasing in the coming few years, based on Kuo's recent report. The era of smart glasses is emerging faster than some might realize. Meta's Ray Bans smart glasses are growing in popularity, boasting sales of over 2 million units. Earlier this year Google unveiled Android XR, and is partnering with Warby Parker for future products. It's no secret tech companies see smart glasses as the next major consumer tech category -- it's the next logical step for devices that can use AI. Sensors and cameras, hidden inside frames, can collect data and give context to the world with hands-free computing. Normalizing these head-mounted computers would be a major shift in culture, similar to how the smartphone boom changed day-to-day interactions. These might be the final years before it's normal to have screens floating in front of your view of the real world -- and the final years before it's normal to wear a recording device near your eyes. New torture clip puts TN cops in spot, five transferred

MADURAI: Amid public outrage over the custodial death of temple security guard B Ajithkumar (27) at Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district in which five policemen have been arrested for murder, CCTV footage of a man being thrashed by policemen at Devadanapatti police station in Theni district has sparked concerns regarding police highhandedness across the state. After the video of C Ramesh (34), an auto driver of Devadanapatti, being thrashed by policemen in a nuisance case went viral, the Theni district police ordered an inquiry and transferred five policemen, including inspector K Abdulla, to the Armed Reserve (AR) police unit on Wednesday. According to sources, the Devadanapatti policemen thrashed Ramesh on January 14 after he was brought to the police station for creating public nuisance near Arisikadai bus stop in Devadanapatti town. Based on a complaint from the local residents, a team picked up Ramesh and brought him to the station. Used force to control drunk Ramesh: Cops After caning him, a case was registered under Section 296 of BNS for causing public disturbance, and he was released on station bail, sources said. The issue came out after a lawyer, who had visited the Devadanapatti police station on January 14 related to another case, filed an RTI request with the district police seeking the CCTV footage of the station to establish his presence at the spot on January 14.

CCTV shows police assaulting auto driver at Theni station; probe ordered

Theni: Just days after the Sivaganga custodial death case sparked public outrage, CCTV footage has emerged showing uniformed police personnel assaulting an auto driver inside the Devadanapatti police station in Theni district. The incident took place on Jan 14, but came to light only on Wednesday, prompting Theni SP R Shiva Prasad to order an enquiry by the ADSP. Five policemen, including the station inspector, have been moved to the AR pending investigation. The man seen being slapped, kicked, and pushed by the policemen has been identified as C Ramesh, a resident of Devadanapatti. According to police, on the day of the Pongal festival, Ramesh allegedly created a public nuisance in an inebriated state near the Arisikadai bus stop. Police took him into custody after being alerted by locals and brought him to the station. Officials claimed that Ramesh continued to behave aggressively and quarrelled with police personnel inside the station. A case was registered against him under Section 296(b) of the IPC, and he was released later on station bail. The video, which surfaced on Wednesday, contradicts the official account, showing at least five policemen assaulting Ramesh while he offered no visible resistance. Tamil Nadu cop booked for sexual assault of minor girl

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Police have registered a Pocso Act case against an armed reserve (AR) sub inspector (SI) based on the statement of an eight-year-old girl. Meanwhile, after the SI's family filed a complaint against the girl's family stating that the complaint against the SI was false, a CSR has been registered, a police officer said. According to the complaint from the minor girl's family, the girl was living with her father and grandfather after her parents' separation. She was found unconscious at the SI's house on Sunday evening after she went missing while playing with friends. The complaint adds that a friend told the family she was last seen near the SI's house. The girl alleged she was drugged and sexually assaulted. Meanwhile, a senior police officer said the complaint may be linked to an ongoing dispute with the SI. He added that even though there seems to be no sexual assault, based on initial reports, a case has been registered as the child has given a statement.

Apple sues former Vision Pro employee for allegedly stealing 'thousands of documents' before joining Snap

Apple has accused a former engineer for its Vision Pro headset computer of stealing company trade secrets before starting a new job at Snap, according to a lawsuit filed in California last week. In the June 24 court filing, Apple accuses Di Liu, a senior design engineer, of downloading thousands of documents in his final days at the Cupertino company last year and saving them to his personal cloud accounts. This lawsuit is the latest example of Apple publicly going after a former employee for leaking internal information. Apple is an intensely secretive company, and lawsuits like this one highlight how the iPhone maker exercises tight control over its internal information, even if it has to pursue legal action against former staff. Apple alleges that Liu didn't inform the company when he resigned late last year that he was headed to Snap, a competitor and maker of smart glasses. As a result, Apple did not shut off his access to accounts and allowed him a customary two-week transition period, which he used to download company files, according to the lawsuit. 'Worse still, the review of Mr. Liu's Apple-issued work laptop also shows that while maintaining access to Apple's Proprietary Information under false pretenses, he used his Apple credentials to exfiltrate thousands of documents containing Proprietary Information from Apple's secure file storage systems,' the iPhone maker's lawyers said in the filing. Many of the files downloaded by Liu had codenames for Apple projects and described the company's technology, product design and supply chain, according to the lawsuit. Apple says that all employees agree to keep Apple files confidential and that Liu broke confidentiality agreements he made when he joined. Liu worked for Apple between 2017 and 2024, according to the lawsuit. Liu worked on Apple's Vision Pro headset as a system product design engineer, per the filing. Liu did not respond to a request for comment from CNBC. Apple lawyers wrote that Liu could use the trade secrets in his work at Snap. Apple is not suing Snap, and the social media company did not respond to a request for comment. 'The overlap between Apple's Proprietary Information that Mr. Liu retained and Snap's AR products (for which Mr. Liu is a 'product design engineer') suggests that Mr. Liu intends to use Apple's Proprietary Information at Snap,' according to the filing. Apple is seeking damages and for Liu to have his devices inspected by a forensic examiner to make sure all the trade secrets are deleted. The iPhone maker has sued several former employees in recent years for taking files when they left the company. Apple settled with former engineer Simon Lancaster in 2022 over providing information to a journalist. Apple also sued a former employee, Andrew Aude, in 2024 over leaking details to the media. That lawsuit was dismissed after Aude apologized. The Cupertino company sued Rivos, a chip startup staffed by former Apple semiconductor employees, over its intellectual property, and settled in 2024. Additionally at least three former Apple employees have also been arrested and accused by the government of taking company secrets and giving them to China-linked organizations. One pled guilty and was sentenced to four months in prison, and two are still in proceedings.
