Student arrested near North Las Vegas school after allegedly tossing AR-15 in bush
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Police arrested a student near a North Las Vegas school in April who was allegedly in possession of an AR-15 and told police he and his friends were planning to steal cars after school, according to a police report 8 News Now obtained. On April 14, near Swainston Middle School in North Las Vegas, officers with the Clark County School District Police Department were patrolling an area near Fort Niagara Avenue and Bethel Bay Street due to 'recent fights and potential narcotic activity,' according to police. Officers reportedly came across three boys, and one of them led officers on a chase before being arrested. A witness told CCSDPD that he saw one of the boys throw a gun in the bushes. Officers found a Ruger AR-15 with a Tasco optic containing a magazine with 28 rounds, according to the arrest report. Police said the student 'may have been in possession of the firearm during school hours,' and one of the boys revealed they 'were going to steal cars after school.' CCSDPD arrested a student on several charges, including carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. CCSDPD categorized the gun incident as happening off property. Officers seized a total of 36 guns from August 2024 to the end of May. In February, a parent expressed concern to the school board over guns after a student brought a firearm to Tom Williams Elementary School. Las Vegas student found with gun on elementary school campus 'Lord forbid that we have an incident in our community,' Abraham Caramejo told CCSD's board of trustees. Newly hired CCSD Superintendent Jhone Ebert was asked whether she wanted to expand or continue the safety measures put in place. 'Yeah. So the safety measures that have been put in place, the alerts, right? We know every faculty member now does have access to the alert system as well as a single point of entry.' Ebert said. 'Those types of things are best practice. And we will continue making sure that we finish out the work at the middle level and continue at the elementary level as well.' A survey on CCSD's website shows that only 64% of students at Swainston Middle School reported feeling safe in a survey done in February. Sixty-two percent of students felt that 'students at this school threaten to hurt other students.' CCSDPD closed out the 2024-2025 school year with a decrease in the number of guns officers seized compared to last year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Cops swoop for realistic looking toy guns, rifles in KL, two states
KUALA LUMPUR: Federal police have launched another sting operation on authentic-looking "toy" guns and rifles following raids in three states today. One of the raids, in Kepong, saw police seize a house full of these imitation firearms. Internal Security and Public Order Department Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Investigations and Intelligence (WCB/PSK) deputy director Senior Assistant Commissioner Zairulnizam Mohd Zainuddin @ Hilmi said the raid led to the arrest of two men and a woman from an East Asian country. "Our investigations revealed that the three were believed to be in charge of storekeeping and distributing these items to interested buyers here. "When we checked the house in Taman Megah, Kepong, we found boxes upon boxes containing these so-called toys inside. "Based on the sheer amount of boxes here, we believe that the demand for these firearms is high in Malaysia," he told reporters at the scene. Zairulnizam said they believe the three are linked to a syndicate based in their home country, where the toys are believed to be manufactured. He said these toy firearms resembled M4, AR15, ARP9 and PDX assault rifles; a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun; and, a Walther P99 pistol, the same kinds police use. "We also found toy firearms which resembled Glock17, Browning, CZ and Sand Viper pistols as well a harpoon gun and various cross-bows. "Some of them are made from metal and look and feel like real guns. The harpoon gun is capable of shooting spears which can cause serious injury to people," he said adding that they also found ball-bearings at the premises. He said they gathered intelligence and monitored the activities of these suspects for a month before launching the operation today at around 7am. "These suspects were believed to be selling the items through live social media sessions as well as TikTok. "Our personnel are now combing through the seizures to determine just how many of these toy firearms have been seized from these raids," he said. Zairulnizam said more details — including those concerning the raids in the other two states — would be revealed in a statement tomorrow. He said police would also obtain a list of all those who have purchased these "toys". "We do not want these imitation firearms to fall into the hands of irresponsible parties who end up using it to commit crimes. "We will gather information on those who have purchased these toy guns and will go after them as well. So if you do not dispose of them soon, do not be surprised if we come knocking on your door," he said.

Two dead in Spokane Valley crime spree, including suspect and good Samaritan who intervened
Jun. 15—Police shot and killed a man in Spokane Valley after he went on a crime spree Sunday morning that included killing a good Samaritan, stealing a family's vehicle and intentionally hitting a motorcyclist with it, officials said. The crime spree started across the state line in Kootenai County around 8:30 a.m. Sheriff Bob Norris said at a news conference that a call came in saying a suspect stole a vehicle from a father and daughter on East Sprague Avenue near Whistle Stop Coffee Shop and then fled east toward Idaho. Police chased after the stolen Dodge Challenger, and a news release said the suspect reached an estimated 140 mph. In the Stateline area, deputies said the suspect was doing donuts with the stolen vehicle before seeing a motorcyclist and intentionally striking him. Norris said the motorcyclist was moderately injured but will be OK. The suspect attempted to steal multiple other vehicles, and at one point a bystander tried to help one of the car owners, when the suspect pulled out an AR-15-style rifle, shooting and killing the bystander, Norris said. The suspect then fled back west on Interstate 90 toward Spokane Valley and allegedly shot out a window at a pursuing law enforcement car. Officers deployed a spike strip, which flattened the suspect's tires, but he continued to drive around 80 mph before crashing into a bystander's vehicle and a Washington State Trooper car that was there for an unrelated crash. The man got out of the vehicle at the intersection of Trent Avenue and Pines Road carrying a firearm. Officers then opened fire, killing him. He was given medical aid, the release said, but was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's office said the suspect's name will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office, along with details on the death . Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels said the suspect did not have a strong criminal background and the motive for the crime is unknown. Police will continue to investigate, and the road was expected to remain remain closed until that is complete. "I want to emphasize how professionally, how swiftly and how decisively law enforcement acted in this very dangerous moment," Nowels said. "They didn't hesitate, and I'm very proud of them.

Man accused of shooting AR-15 at WA deputy faces life in prison
The Brief The man accused of shooting an AR-15 at a Thurston County deputy faces life behind bars. Damien Madison fled the state after opening fire on a deputy during a high-speed chase, according to investigators. More than a month after the crime, Madison finally appeared in a Thurston County courtroom packed with deputies, with his trial now scheduled for August. OLYMPIA, WA - The man accused of firing an AR-15-style rifle at a sheriff's deputy during a high-speed chase in Thurston County and fleeing the state appeared in court Wednesday. Damien Madison, 27, faces multiple charges in connection to this crimespree including first-degree assault, drive-by shooting, unlawful possession of a gun. Madison also has several active cases in Thurston County. During the hearing, the prosecution addressed the judge regarding Madison's charges. "He was willing to sacrifice his own safety, the safety of the men and women in this community that give their lives every single day, and that he fired upon them in such a wanton and disregard for the safety of everyone in this community is abhorrent to the state," a prosecutor said in court. "Mr. Madison is someone who poses an extreme danger to himself, to the loved one that was with him, to everyone that operates a motor vehicle in this community," she added. What they're saying About 50 deputies from the Thurston County Sheriff's Office filled the courtroom in a show of support. Sheriff Derek Sanders said the large turnout was about standing with one of their own. "If you think that no one got hurt, you don't get shot at and just come back normal. I don't care who you are. Whether you're in law enforcement, or military, member of the community, anytime you got rounds flying your way, you don't come out the same on the other side. I would just say it's important for our deputies to see the kind of community support," Sanders said. During the hearing, Madison wiped his eyes several times and buried his head in his hands after the judge noted he could face life in prison if convicted. "I hope there is some remorse, and regardless of how this case resolves, even for the worst of the worst offenders, I hope they can find a way to somehow become better people and amend what they have done," Sanders added. Madison is currently being held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled, and trial proceedings are expected to begin later this summer.
