Egypt presses to end systematic killing of Gaza civilians, allow swift aid resumption: FM

Egypt's FM Badr Abdelatty speaks to Al Qahera News ahead of the 34th Arab Summit in Baghdad, May 16, 2025 – Al Qahera News CAIRO – 16 May 2025: Arab leaders and top officials are set to meet for the 34th Arab Summit in Baghdad on Saturday, with Gaza, Sudan, Yemen, and Syria high on the agenda. Egypt's focus during the summit includes urging an end to the war in Gaza, which has persisted since October 2023. Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty stated that various draft resolutions will be reviewed for adoption during the summit, including one regarding the Palestinian cause and the Arab plan for the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. In an interview with Al Qahera News posted on Friday, Abdelatty emphasized the unwavering efforts by both Egypt and Qatar to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, reaffirming this objective as 'a top priority.' 'Our top priority is to halt the systematic killing of civilians in the Gaza Strip, the majority of whom are women and children, and to expedite the delivery of aid in light of the current famine conditions in Gaza,' the foreign minister said. He added that Egypt plans to call for an international conference for Gaza reconstruction and early recovery in Cairo once a ceasefire is reached. Abdelatty indicated a greater understanding from the US regarding the utmost importance of securing a ceasefire agreement, facilitating aid delivery and ensuring the release of all captives. 'We noted to the US side that when we reached a ceasefire agreement on January 19, we were able to secure the release of more than 31 hostages in the first phase. Thus, there is potential to release all hostages if we return to this agreement and commit to entering its second phase.' 'The major problem remains on the Israeli side, with a lack of political will to move forward towards achieving a ceasefire,' said the foreign minister. 'Our efforts have not ceased at all. The problem remains that there is a party that considers itself above the law, blatantly violating the most basic rules of international humanitarian law without accountability from the international community.' Abdelatty stressed that Egypt relies on the US role, as well as on the international community, including the European Union, Russia, and China, to intensify pressure on the Israeli side to move forward. The Israeli war in Gaza has been ongoing since October 2023, killing over 53,000 people and injuring more than 120,000 others. Egypt, Qatar, and the US continue persistent efforts to mediate between Hamas and Israel to achieve a ceasefire that allows the entry of aid and a prisoner exchange deal. While nearly all captives were released from Gaza through two ceasefires brokered by the three countries, Israel shattered a ceasefire that took effect on January 19, which had resulted in the release of 38 captives, including 30 alive. The Israeli resumption of the war came after the expiration of the first phase of the deal in March, evading a scheduled transition to the second phase, which was set to include a permanent cessation of hostilities, the full withdrawal of Israeli troops, and the release of all remaining captives. Hamas still holds 58 captives—at least 20 of whom are presumed alive—and has stated it will only agree to a prisoner swap if Israel approves a permanent ceasefire and withdraws its troops from the entire enclave. Meanwhile, Israel is pressuring Hamas to accept a temporary weeks-long ceasefire that facilitates a prisoner exchange and allows humanitarian aid deliveries. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to resume attacks once the truce ends to 'destroy' Hamas.

Hamas: Netanyahu's ‘endless' war in Gaza seeks to ‘buy more time'

Israeli captive Omer Shem Tov kisses the head of a fighter from Al Qassam as he was released in a prisoner-captive swap under the Gaza ceasefire deal, Feb. 22, 2025 - Hamas CAIRO – 15 May 2025: Hamas condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for leading 'an endless war' in Gaza, accusing him of seeking to 'buy more time' while showing indifference to the fate of the captives. In a statement reported by Al Qahera News, Hamas described Netanyahu as 'posing a danger to the region and the world,' calling for an international response amid the ongoing hostilities. Hamas criticized Netanyahu's insistence on continuing the war despite ongoing negotiations, emphasizing the movement's objectives to halt Israeli aggression, ensure the withdrawal of troops from Gaza, and facilitate the release of captives. Israel has intensified its attacks across Gaza, even though ceasefire negotiations began in Doha on Wednesday, complicating efforts to secure a prisoner exchange deal. Hamas currently holds 58 captives, with 21 presumed alive, and has expressed its readiness to release all remaining captives in exchange for a full withdrawal of Israeli troops. However, Israel has stressed rejection to ending the war. Tel Aviv has announced plans to expand its operations in Gaza and reoccupy the entire enclave indefinitely if Hamas fails to agree to the so-called 'Witkoff proposal' by the end of US President Donald Trump's current trip to the Gulf. This proposal includes a ceasefire lasting only a few weeks in exchange for the release of half of the living hostages still held in Gaza. During this period, Israel is set to negotiate an end to the war without committing to a final resolution. Monday was significant for Israel and the US, as Israeli-US soldier Edan Alexander was released by Hamas after spending 583 days in captivity since October 7, 2023, and was reunited with his family under a Hamas-US agreement. Hamas has rejected the idea of a brief ceasefire and has repeatedly asserted that captives can only be released through negotiations. The movement warned that renewed Israeli strikes on Gaza represent 'a death sentence' for the captives. The Israeli war in Gaza has claimed the lives of more than 52,000 Palestinians since October 7, 2023, many of them women and children.

Egypt's Intelligence Chief meets with Israeli negotiating team in Cairo

CAIRO – 28 April 2025: Head of Egyptian Intelligence Services Hassan Mahmoud Rashad met today with the Israeli negotiating team, headed by the Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, in Cairo to discuss proposals for reaching a ceasefire in Gaza Strip and a prisoner swap deal, Al Qahera News. The meeting convened after Hamas delegation visited Egypt several days ago to discuss a five-year truce and a possible ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The meetings are a continuation of intensive Egyptian-Qatari efforts to reinstate the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. A delegation from Hamas leaders arrived in Cairo at dawn on Saturday, led by Muhammad Darwish, Chairman of the Hamas Leadership Council, the movement announced in a statement. The delegation members begun meetings with Egyptian officials to present Hamas's vision for a ceasefire, an end to the war, and a prisoner exchange, all within the framework of a comprehensive agreement that includes a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the reconstruction of the Strip. The delegation will also address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, focusing on the consequences of the ongoing blockade and the urgent need to deliver food, medicine, and other essential aid to the population of the strip. In addition, discussions covered efforts to establish a community-based support committee to help administer Gaza, as well as internal Palestinian issues and strategies for addressing them, the statement added. However, Israeli media reported that Tel Aviv rejects the five-year truce proposal in the Gaza Strip, saying there is no chance of it happening.

Hamas still studies ceasefire proposals submitted by mediators: Qahera News

File- The Red Cross team signed documents on receiving the bodies of the four Israeli captives from Hamas amid a large public presence CAIRO – 19 April 2025: Hamas is still reviewing the proposals submitted by the mediators, said sources to Al Qahera News on Friday evening. The source added that Hamas consultations are continuing to reach a permanent ceasefire agreement in Gaza, affirming that Egyptian-Qatari mediation efforts are continuing to stop the Palestinian bloodshed and allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. Hamas chief Khalil Al-Hayya on Thursday said they are ready to begin immediate 'comprehensive package' talks for Gaza ceasefire, which includes the release of all captives for an end to the war. He slammed the 'impossible conditions' set by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in response to a recent ceasefire proposal by the mediators, reiterating rejection of Tel Aviv's demand for the group to disarm. 'The movement is ready to begin immediate negotiations for a comprehensive package, which includes the release of all prisoners held by the resistance and an agreed number of Palestinian prisoners in occupation jails,' Hayya said. In return, Israel will have to permanently halt the war and fully withdraw from Gaza, allowing reconstruction to start and lifting the blockade, he added. Additional reporting by Amr Mohamed Kandil
