Popular Italian restaurant announces closure - here's what's next

Mediterraneo, in Merchant City, will shut on Monday, May 19. But, another Glasgow favourite, Amore, is set to take over the venue following a four-month refurbishment. Romano Perella, the owner of Amore, bought Mediterraneo last year with the intention of changing it up. Now, he is thrilled to have the chance to create a sister restaurant for the beloved Italian spot. The 30-year-old said: 'It's going to be a completely new concept, I think we can say it is still the very best of Italian food, of course, as that's our key area of expertise. 'We are closing on Monday and we expect the work to take around four months, so we should be opening just after the summer. 'It will look completely different – we have a very strong idea of the concept and how it looks and feels. 'We took Mediterraneo on with an idea of what we wanted to do already - the full concept wasn't set in stone then but we have put a lot of time and energy into it. 'The core idea of what I wanted to create was there but we are now working out the last fine details and it's coming together. 'I think there's a good opportunity and I think people are wanting something new. 'The new idea is very much for people who know food, but will be welcoming to all - we're very excited to bring something totally new to the city.' Once the new spot is open, people will be able to switch between the two restaurants if they don't want to wait too long. He added: 'Of course, there is much, much more to our plans than a second Amore just down the street. 'It's something way, way beyond that. For once, I feel this is a closure story, which is actually a positive thing for the city and for the food scene here. 'Mediterraneo had its time – the new concept we are creating is the future of dining in Glasgow.'

Over the next four months, Amore boss Romano Perella will oversee a programme of work to transform the venue into a new concept. And Romano, 30, says he's keeping the details under wraps to avoid imitations. He said: 'It's going to be a completely new concept, I think we can say it is still the very best of Italian food of course as that's our key area of expertise. Beloved steakhouse chain to shut ALL its restaurants after collapsing into administration with no explanation Romano saw the opportunity when he snapped up Mediterraneo, which occupies a massive site in the middle of the city, between Merchant City and Queen Street, just off George Square. The tired unit will be transformed into a stylish new space. He said: 'We're very fortunate that Amore continues to run at capacity, I think people appreciate the quality and consistency we offer so even in these tough times we can do well. 'We're very busy at weekends and although our concept means you never have to wait long for a table, it makes sense to have another offering close by so people can choose to wait or go to our sister restaurant. HMS Endeavour study entered into RI State Archives

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) unveiled its most recent study on several ancient shipwrecks off the coast of Newport — of which one may be a famous sailing vessel scuttled more than two centuries ago. The Newport Transport Report details RIMAP's latest fieldwork and analysis of a shipwreck site that is believed to be the final resting place of the HMS Endeavour, a British Royal Navy research vessel that sank in the 1778 blockade of Narragansett Bay. RELATED: Researchers say wreck of 'Endeavour' found in Newport Harbor The HMS Endeavour, which was renamed the Lord Sandwich, was one of 13 ships owned by Captain James Cook that were deliberately sunk in the blockade — which was an effort to protect Newport Harbor from the French Army. 'This act clearly demonstrates how important the colony of Rhode Island was, not only to the nation, but to the world,' RIMAP Chairman Joseph McNamara said. RIMAP has conducted several archeological site searches in Newport Harbor, with special interest in the HMS Endeavour. The vast research led to the discovery of artifacts that were suspected to be from the sunken vessel, though it has still yet to be confirmed. The investigation has narrowed down likely candidates that could be the HMS Endeavour with pieces that are consistent with ships from that time period. Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore is thrilled that this extensive research is now available in the State Archives. 'This is another treasure that we have that connects Rhode Island to American history, specifically to the American Revolution,' Amore said. Amore is grateful that this study is now easily accessible, adding that it will give educators and their students the opportunity to learn about the state's strong colonial ties. Jeff Bezos is said to be planning a lavish Venice wedding. But it might not have the best view in town

Venice is set to be the stage for the highly anticipated nuptials between multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos and his bride-to-be Lauren Sanchez, according to multiple media reports, but even one of the world's richest people may face a struggle to access the best views in town. The three-day celebrations are reported to be starting around June 26 and will take place on Bezos' $500-million superyacht, Koru, which will be anchored in the Venice lagoon. While that may sound like a dream wedding location, restrictions on large ships getting too close to Venice's historic St. Mark's square may impede the view. Bezos' yacht, at 3,493 gross tons, is far below the 25,000 gross ton maximum for vessels entering the Venice lagoon, but it's too large to be allowed anywhere near the Grand Canal, the Italian city's most scenic waterway. While no details of the ceremony have been confirmed by Bezos or his fiancée — CNN reached out but didn't get a response — several luxury accommodation venues appear poised for an influx of guests over the purported wedding dates. The city's five major luxury hotels along the Grand Canal, including the Belmond Hotel Cipriani, the St. Regis Venis, the Gritti Palace, the Hotel Danieli and the luxurious Grand Aman Hotel, where George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin celebrated their wedding in 2014, are all almost entirely booked for the last weekend of June, according to calls to the hotels made by CNN. The hotels would not confirm the occasion or if large blocks of rooms had been reserved. Venice's exclusive fleet of private water taxis, including the 'Amore' famously used by Clooney and Alamuddin to leave the wedding venue, have also been tentatively reserved, according to the Venice water taxi cooperative. During the Clooney-Alamuddin wedding, VIP guests were ferried in open-water taxis along the Grand Canal as thousands of well wishers and paparazzi stood on the city's bridges to watch the spectacle yelling 'auguri' or best wishes. It's not clear if there will be the same public viewing opportunities for the Bezos celebrations. Other details are thin on the ground. The Venice gondola association did not report an uptick in June reservations. Harry's Bar, one of the most famous spots in the city, would not comment if it would be a venue for any side events. A spokesperson for the city of Venice could not confirm news of the event, but did say the couple would need to apply for a marriage license well in advance if they were to wed in Italian waters. Some news reports suggest their official ceremony will take place prior to the Venetian event. Bezos popped the question with a 30-karat diamond ring in 2023 and held an engagement party off the Amalfi Coast near Positano on board his yacht, with Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan and Kris Jenner as guests. Bezos' superyacht is a regular feature off Italy's picturesque coast during the summer months. Before marrying the world's third richest man, Sanchez, a journalist and aviation expert, will lead her fiancé's Blue Origin NS-31 space mission with six high-profile women, including herself, Katy Perry and Gayle Young, scheduled for March 31, 2025. Sanchez was so inspired by space flight, she penned a children's book, 'The Fly Who Flew to Space,' in September 2024.
