Surprising Google Chrome bid upends Apple AI rumors

Surprising Google Chrome bid upends Apple AI rumors originally appeared on TheStreet. Alphabet has locked horns with the Justice Department over its dominance in the U.S. search market, with the U.S. Department of Justice courts angling to break the company up to end its monopoly. The stakes are high, given that Google is the largest search engine and Google Chrome is the largest browser, providing Alphabet unparalleled control over how Americans interact with the internet. While Alphabet is appealing a ruling to spin off its Chrome browser, rivals are drooling over the potential to acquire the search engine. 💵💰💰💵 And it's not just established big tech that's eyeballing it. Perplexity, the second-largest AI chatbot by market share, has made an unexpected, unsolicited, and surprising $34.5 billion bid to buy Chrome this week. Alphabet will unlikely agree to sell Chrome to Perplexity, founded by Aravind Srinivas, a former Google DeepMind intern and OpenAI employee. However, the bold move could still upend reports that Apple has been considering acquiring Perplexity to accelerate its AI program. Apple has a Google problem (and an AI problem) The launch of ChatGPT in 2022 kick-started a tsunami of research and development of AI chatbots. These large language models can quickly parse massive amounts of data to create more useful answers to user searches. ChatGPT is the Goliath, with a market share of nearly 80%, but Perplexity, also developed in 2022, is the second-largest player with a 10% market share. Other high-profile AI chatbots include Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, Microsoft's Copilot, Meta Platform's Llama, and DeepSeek — a Chinese chatbot that created a stir earlier this year because it was reportedly developed for just $6 million. Absent from the list? has a long history of secretive development, taking its time to reinvent more user-friendly consumer electronics. Founder Steve Jobs was famous for his "one more thing" reveals at Apple conferences, and under current CEO Tim Cook, Apple has taken a measured approach to new products, preferring tweaks rather than major, revolutionary changes. Perhaps, unsurprisingly, this has led to a lot of criticism over Apple's progress on AI. Many believe Apple Intelligence is lagging severely behind rivals, leaving the company open to missing out on what could be the biggest technology trend since the dawn of the internet. Apple's Cook insists there's an AI plan in motion, but it's not only Apple fans who hope that's true. Investors are also eagerly awaiting a major splash, given that AI could help blunt the potential loss of $20 billion in revenue from Google, which pays Apple to be the default search engine behind its Safari browser. The DOJ says Apple's deal with Google is anticompetitive and a "pay-to-play" agreement that effectively locks out rivals, making it a cornerstone of its argument against Google's monopoly. Perplexity's bid to buy Chrome may squash Apple's M&A interest Rumors have swirled that Apple may accelerate its AI roadmap by acquiring Perplexity. Doing so would solve a few big challenges for Apple, providing it with immediate AI scale and a proven monetization strategy, given Perplexity's size and freemium model. It would also give it an answer engine that could mitigate some risks of losing Google as its search engine. The sheer size of Perplexity's offer may be enough to force Apple away from the table. Perplexity is reportedly valued at $18 billion, a manageable number for Apple given its size, borrowing power, and over $200 billion in short and long-term cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities. More AI Stocks: Jim Cramer drops jaw-dropping price target on Palantir stock post-earnings Morgan Stanley slaps eye-popping price target on Nvidia stock Apple CEO drops bombshell about its future Still, Apple's track record is smaller bolt-on deals, rather than huge splashes. Its largest acquisition was Beats, which cost it only $3 billion. Clearly, it has historically believed its engineers can build better mousetraps than rivals. Yet Tim Cook did leave the door open to larger deals in July. "We've acquired around seven companies this year,' said Cook on Apple's quarterly earnings conference call. 'We're very open to M&A that accelerates our road map… We are not stuck on a certain size company.' Nevertheless, Perplexity's $34.5 billion bid for Chrome, which it claims has venture capital backing, suggests that buying it outright may cost (a lot) more than $18 billion. If the deal goes through, however unlikely that may be, it would likely throw up an anticompetitive regulatory hurdle too large to overcome, given that combined, Safari and Chrome would represent browser market share north of 80%. Either way, Perplexity's unexpected bid for Chrome could mean any deal with Apple is on the back burner, if not off the stove Google Chrome bid upends Apple AI rumors first appeared on TheStreet on Aug 13, 2025 This story was originally reported by TheStreet on Aug 13, 2025, where it first appeared.

The special online sale gets you the M4 MacBook Air for a discounted price of Rs 90,900 which is Rs 9,000 less than its original range. As the name suggests, the MacBook Air model gets the latest M4-series chipset with 16GB RAM as the standard. The new CPU is claimed to be faster in performance and better with efficiency. The RAM upgrade was done to help the new Macs support Apple AI features that are still few in numbers but at least get future-ready. It runs on the macOS Sequoia version out of the box and will be upgrading to the next macOS 26 version later this year. It features a 13-inch liquid Retina display with 60Hz refresh rate and 500 nits of brightness. You get it with dual USB C Thunderbolt ports, support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 standard. Apple Explains How Its AI Models Are Trained And How They Work

Last Updated: Apple AI push has been slow but the company is making sure that its own ambitions do not come at the cost of user privacy and their data being utilised. Apple's AI journey has started on a stuttering note, so much that the company had to delay the Siri AI release until 2026. The company's focus on privacy means it does not have the dataset to train its AI models and it needs external help to push some of the advanced features with the help of its rivals. But now Apple has come out with a detailed report which explains how its AI models are trained and how they are designed to work in the absence of hardcore data which gives privacy of the users heavy importance. The company is even using its own AI servers to power the data centres that enable the Apple AI model to run and do the heavy lifting. Apple AI Models: How Are They Trained? The company has developed two different AI models that are catering to basic on-device processing, while the bigger version runs through Apple's private computing system. The company uses both the models for tasks like giving text interpretations, understanding images and even aid their creation. All these are also done with Apple's privacy ideology at the top of the mind. Apple trains these AI models using synthetic data that is completely devoid of any information coming from user devices. It uses the data generated by the internal models that uses metrics from devices opting for the device analytics feature Apple offers to iPhone and iPad users. The lack of real-world data limits its ability to contextualise the AI model, which explains why Siri or Apple AI has issues in deciphering the exact prompt from the user. Apple's advanced tech allows the company to support a wide range of AI features locally and not needing the cloud compute power for all the tools. This is only applicable when you route the requests through OpenAI or Google servers, which Apple cannot control how your data is processed. The heavy emphasis on privacy for AI is evident all around Apple's architecture, computing tech and even the data it uses to train its models have privacy written all over. These have certainly limited how Apple can process the data, especially compared to the vast trove of dataset available to OpenAI and Google, who may have employed different ways to gather/scrape them. Apple skipped the AI juggle at the WWDC 2025 last month and there is a strong chance that the iPhone 17 series launch also misses out on the AI pitch. The company will need a big 2026 to finally get the AI juggernaut moving before its rivals become hard to catch up. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 11:27 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. iOS 26 Beta 4 Update Released For iPhone Users: Any Big Changes?

Last Updated: iOS 26 developer beta 4 has released for iPhone users this week and Apple could be getting ready to bring the public beta soon The wait for the iOS 26 public beta goes on as Apple comes out with the iOS 26 beta 4 version for iPhone users on Tuesday. The company has worked on some of the features that were available with the beta 3 version after seemingly taking feedback from online viewers in the last few weeks. The presence of a beta 4 update does seem strange as Apple was widely tipped to start the iOS 26 public beta program this week but looks like the wait goes on. iOS 26 Beta 4 Update: What iPhone Users Get The iOS 26 beta 4 version has come out and it does seem loaded, at least with the download package size on offer from the company. The most notable change is linked to the Liquid Glass interface that Apple had tweaked with the beta 3 update but the latest version is back to its default mode. Apple is clearly trying out different tones for the UI and these minor alterations suggest the company is still looking for the best mix of transparency and usability. It does feel like a work in progress and hopefully the public beta will give us the best version of the iOS 26 interface. We'll keep an eye out for more features that the developer beta might bring for the users. Apple did say the public beta will be coming in July 2025, and we've less than a week before the month ends, so the clock is ticking, and hopefully the beta 4 version means the iOS 26 public beta is imminent. iOS 26 update will only run on iPhone 11 or higher models this year. Those using the iPhone XS or Xr will get security updates from the company but new feature roll outs are done. If you want the Apple AI features, you need the iPhone 15 Pro or later models to try out Siri AI and other tools that come out next year. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 10:32 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
