'You have to be authentic': Meghan Markle responds to criticism of her viral hospital dance video
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Image: Bang Showbiz Meghan Markle has addressed the recent backlash surrounding a viral video in which she and Prince Harry are seen dancing in a hospital room moments before the birth of their daughter, Lilibet. Earlier this month, the Duchess of Sussex posted the joyful clip on Instagram to mark Lilibet's fourth birthday. The video, set to the song 'Baby Momma,' features Meghan and Harry showing off their dance moves. At one point, she is even seen playfully twerking as she holds her baby bump. The lighthearted moment sparked mixed reactions online, which has prompted Meghan to speak out during a candid conversation with British businesswoman Emma Grede in an episode of her 'Aspire' podcast titled "Meghan, Duchess of Sussex: Why Ambition Is Her Jam." "You have to be authentic," Meghan said, after Grede admitted she had watched the video '20 times.' 'Did you see my 'Baby Momma' dance?' Meghan asked with a laugh. Grede replied, 'Is that Prince Harry there with the fingers? I was like, OK… good on Harry, let's go. But that's you, right? Like that's you in a way we haven't really seen before.' In the video caption, posted on June 4, Meghan reflected on the moments leading up to Lilibet's birth. 'Four years ago today, this also happened. Both of our children were a week past their due dates… so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work, there was only one thing left to do!' she wrote alongside the clip. Speaking on the podcast, the duchess explained the importance of sharing real, personal moments despite public scrutiny. 'That was four years ago, so it's also a really great reminder that with all the noise, or whatever people do, there's still a whole life, a real, authentic, fun life, that's happening behind the scenes.' She also expressed gratitude for having a platform where she can share on her own terms. 'I'm just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms.' Since rejoining Instagram in January, Meghan has offered rare glimpses into her family life. On Sunday, she marked Father's Day with a heartfelt video tribute to Prince Harry. The short montage featured tender moments of Harry teaching their son Archie to ride a bike, beach walks with their children, and sweet family snapshots. 'Happy Father's Day to our favorite guy,' she wrote alongside the video, celebrating Harry's role as a father to Archie and Lilibet. Meghan married Harry in 2018 and performed her royal duties until the couple stepped back in 2020 and moved to the United States. Since they stepped back, both Harry and Meghan have talked about the mistreatment they received while doing their royal duties and how the palace didn't protect them. In 2021, the couple shared their story in a CBS interview. They also revealed a lot more in their 2022 docuseries 'Harry & Meghan' on Netflix. Meghan also spoke with Grede about a video she recently posted on Instagram that has gone viral. The 'baby mama dance' video was a throwback that she posted for her daughter, Princess Lilibet's, birthday. Grede told Meghan that she did a 'little secret cheer' when she saw the video that Meghan had filmed in the delivery room before Lilibet was born. Meghan explained that the clip 'was four years ago.' She also told Grede, 'So it's also a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there's still a whole life — a real, authentic, fun life — that's happening behind the scenes.' Watch Meghan Markle take ‘subtle swipe' at Royal Family as she reveals how she'd ‘rewrite public narrative' on podcast
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MEGHAN Markle has taken a "subtle swipe" at the Royal Family as she reveals how she'd change the public narrative on her podcast. The Duchess of Sussex appeared on her podcast alongside friend Emma Grede, CEO of Good American and founding partner of Kim Kardashian's Skims line, where she seemed to take several digs at the Royal Family. The Duchess went on to share advice that she had receieved from Serana Williams regarding how she was viewed in the public after falling love with Prince Harry. "My dear friend Serena, she told me years ago: 'A lie can't live forever,'" said Meghan. She added: "Eight years is a long time, but not forever." The former Suits star also revealed she didn't feel her voice was truly empowered during her time as a royal — and said it only returned after stepping back and reclaiming her Instagram account. Meghan added: "It was a great way to get my voice back." It comes after the Duchess broke her silence on her cringey twerking video after it sparked wild conspiracy theories. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, posted the footage earlier this month showing her and Prince Harry dancing in a hospital room as she tried to induce daughter Lilibet's birth in 2021. But conspiracy theorists bizarrely claimed that Meghan's bump was not real, suggesting she was wearing a prosthetic pregnant belly in the clip. Now, almost a fortnight after sharing the 80-second video with her three million followers on Instagram, the ex-Suits actress has defended her decision to post the personal footage. Meghan's twerking video was so cringey it was like parody, but it did exactly what she wanted She called on people to "tell the truth" about her and claimed that the video was a chance for her to share behind the scenes of her "authentic" life. Speaking on Dragon's Den star Emma Grede on the entrepreneur's Aspire podcast, she said: "You have to be authentic. "Did you see my "Baby Momma" dance? That wasn't yesterday, that was four years ago. "It's a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there's still a whole life - a real, authentic, fun life - that's happening behind the scenes. "I'm just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms." The footage - released to celebrate Lilibet's fourth birthday on June 3 - showed heavily pregnant Meghan making rowing movements and shimmying her shoulders beside the hospital bed. But it was slammed by royal experts as cringey and "hard to watch". Commmentator Ingrid Seward accused The Sussexes of invading their own privacy. She told The Sun: 'They can do what they like but why put it online? "Does Meghan have no boundaries? I think it's vulgar, unnecessary, attention-seeking. 'They make such a point about privacy and security and then they put stuff out there. Meghan can't resist putting it out there. 'I think it's completely hypocritical for everything she stands for. It's very embarrassing.' It comes after Meghan Markle shared a rare video showing Archie and Lilibet to wish Harry a Happy Father's day. And Price Louis stole the show today as he joined members of the Royal Family to mark the King's official birthday.
