Millions of Brits have a smart meter display in their home, which should allow them to track how much they're spending on gas and electricity. But it turns out that many may not be working correctly Millions now have smart meter displays in their homes, which should enable them to monitor how much they're spending on our gas and electricity. ‌ For many it provides reassurance and enables them to identify where they can cut costs on gas and electricity bills. We ought to be able to rely on the readings on our displays but this isn't always the situation. ‌ However, around four million smart meters may not be functioning properly, meaning they aren't transmitting accurate information to suppliers as they should be. This leaves households potentially paying more than they ought to for energy as suppliers are left to estimate how much they are consuming. This comes after news that UK homes are taking steps not seen for two years amid Rachel Reeves tax rise fears. ‌ If energy companies don't receive smart meter readings, they will calculate bills based on estimates. Households with trees in their home face risk of £20,000 fine this summer

There are strict laws in place surrounding the cutting down or trimming of trees in your garden - and many people could be falling foul of the rules without even realising it UK households with trees in their gardens could be slapped with a hefty £20,000 fine this August. This comes after Martin Fielding from Stockport, who believed he was simply trimming a "regular tree", received a shocking letter from the council. ‌ Experts are now warning that many UK households may not realise that trees in residential gardens can be protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). This means that if you cut down, lop, damage or destroy a protected tree without permission, you could face criminal prosecution and a fine of up to £20,000 in a magistrates' court. ‌ Mr Fielding, 51, said: "It was blocking the light in the conservatory and leaning over the fence. So I gave it a proper cut. I didn't even know such a thing existed. I thought trees in your own garden were your responsibility," Mr Fielding continued. "I was shocked to learn I could be fined thousands." ‌ Sophie Willoughby, a gardening expert who was contacted by My Home Improvements, explained: "The trouble is, most homeowners have no idea their tree is protected. It's easy to think you're just doing routine garden work, but one snip too many and you could face a hefty fine. "Councils take it very seriously and so they should, because mature trees are crucial for wildlife and air quality," she added. So, check with your council - before cutting or trimming any large trees, contact your local authority to find out if there's a TPO in place. ‌ Don't take it for granted that it's alright just because it's in your garden and get written permission – if a tree is protected, you must apply for permission to do any work on it, reports Birmingham Mail. A spokesperson from My Home Improvements, advised: "Before you pick up the saw or shears, take a moment to check your tree isn't protected. Councils don't issue TPOs lightly and breaching one can land you in legal trouble." They added: "Whether you're trimming, pruning or removing, always ask first, as it's a simple step that could save you £20,000 and a trip to court." Gardening during the summer months is an important task. If left on the side, the more it accumulates, the more time it will take from your busy schedules to clear up. Still, it's important to double-check with your local council before undertaking any job that may require more than just chopping a few leaves.

Divorced parents could be stopping from flying without six important documents

Separated parents going abroad with their children have been warned about six crucial documents they need to bring with them this summer, or they may be denied travel. Divorced parents face the prospect of being refused entry at airports without the proper paperwork, experts have cautioned. Separated mums and dads have been alerted about six essential documents required for summer travel. Travelling without the consent of the other parent could be considered child abduction under UK law. Therefore, it's essential to carry a signed consent letter and supporting documents whenever travelling abroad to avoid problems. Ann Owens, a consultant solicitor specialising in divorce law at Richard Nelson LLP, explained that estranged and divorced parents must obtain a consent letter from the parent staying behind, a birth certificate, a divorce certificate, a marriage certificate, the child's passport and a court order (where relevant)." As reported by Birmingham Mail, Ann said that a consent letter from the non-travelling parent is very important. She said: "A signed letter provides proof that your ex-partner has agreed to you holidaying abroad should you ever be challenged while travelling." Exceptions may apply in different cases. As explained by if the person has a Child Arrangement Order stating that the child lives with them, then they can travel up to 28 days without the other parent's consent, unless the court has said otherwise. Ann added: "The letter will need the other parent's contact details as well as the details of your holiday, such as where you're going to be staying. As well as carrying the passport, you must also ensure it's valid for the specific country you're travelling to. "In the majority of instances your passport will need to be valid for at least three months after your intended return date but for countries like Dubai, Thailand and Australia it must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry into the country." Ann warned: "If you're relying on a court order to take your child abroad it's imperative to allow as much time as possible for the case to be heard. While you can request an urgent court order these can take more than a week to go through the courts. "For those who have been successful in gaining permission this way then you must travel with a sealed copy of the Court Order with you. Border officials may ask for proof of your legal right to take the child abroad at the airport, and if you can't provide it, you may be turned away at customs." But most importantly, besides having all the paperwork in order, parents are responsible for ensuring that their child's passport is valid and accessible.

Son of British mum on death row in India says 'I want to watch her hanged'

Ramandeep Kaur Mann faces the death penalty in India for murdering her husband Sukhjit Singh while he slept. The son of a British mum facing the death penalty in India has said he wants to watch her hanged. ‌ Ramandeep Kaur Mann was convicted after trial of killing husband Sukhjit Singh, with the help of her secret lover Gurpreet Singh while on a family trip to India in 2017. ‌ Ramandeep laced her husband's biryani with sedatives before smothering him with a pillow as he slept. Gurpreet then bashed childhood friend Sukhjit over the head with a hammer, with Ramandeep finally slitting his throat, reports the the Birmingham Mail. ‌ The brutal murder in Banda, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, was said to be over Sukhjit's £2 million life insurance policy. Ramandeep's eldest son Arjun, who was nine at the time, helped secure his mother's conviction. He woke up and witnessed the horrific killing. He even gave evidence against his mum in court, Daily Mail reports. ‌ Ramandeep's legal team has since claimed Arjun was was 'tutored' to provide false and that relatives fabricated the case against her. They are now appealing her conviction. But Arjun - whose family is from from Littleover, Derby - has said that he does not regret giving evidence in court and wants to watch his mum being hanged. He said: "There are not many children who watch their mother kill their father and then give evidence about it. ‌ "How do you try and get on with your life after something like this? "I've had to be very brave and I'm proud of what I've done because I've got justice for my father. "My brother and me don't think of this woman as my mother anymore, she's evil. ‌ "We want nothing to do with her. As far as I'm concerned, she stopped being a mother to us the moment she murdered our father." Commenting on her death sentence, he said: "I would like to be there when it happens. "It doesn't fill me with fear, in fact, it would give me a lot of satisfaction and relief and I look forward to that day. ‌ "I would like all my family to be there with me. I would like to see with my own eyes that justice for my father has been served. "She deserves to hang because she did such an evil thing she did." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
