Orlando Pirates reload, Durban City rise: Two clubs, one ambitious season

Abdeslam Ouaddou steps into the hot seat at Orlando Pirates, tasked with delivering silverware in a high-pressure season. Photo: Backpageix Image: Backpageix A new Betway Premiership season kicks off with two very different missions in focus — Orlando Pirates chasing long-awaited glory, and Durban City FC stepping into the spotlight for the first time. The Buccaneers are armed with fresh talent and a new coach as they look to finally end their league title drought. Durban City, under the wily Gavin Hunt, are here to survive — and maybe surprise a few along the way. One aims to conquer, the other to belong. But both will help shape a season where youth leads the charge, pressure mounts early, and every game could tip the scales. Video Player is loading. Last season's title push faltered under the weight of fixture congestion and fatigue, revealing the need for better rotation. The Buccaneers have responded by strengthening their squad with key signings, notably Sinoxolo Kwayiba and Oswin Appollis, whose attacking flair and creativity will ease the burden on rising star Relebohile Mofokeng. The appointment of Abdeslam Ouaddou, the former Marumo Gallants coach, signals a new era following Jose Riveiro's departure. Ouaddou inherits a team that reached two domestic cup finals last season—winning one—and made the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League. Maintaining that level of performance will be the expectation. Ouaddou's challenge will be twofold: adapting quickly to a high-pressure environment and ensuring the new arrivals settle into the squad. If he succeeds in imposing his style without disrupting momentum, Pirates could finally end their 13-year wait for a league title. Backed by club owner Farook Kadodia and the experienced Gavin Hunt, the side are building a foundation based on discipline, pragmatism, and belief. Without the benefit of a Diski Challenge structure, City have assembled a squad of promising youngsters and seasoned professionals. Hunt, a proven tactician with multiple league titles to his name, has quietly instilled a competitive edge into the team. One to watch is Trevor Mokwena, a tricky winger whose low centre of gravity and quick feet make him a potential game-changer. In midfield, Haashim Domingo brings poise and control, while Samkelo Maseko could emerge as the breakout star—offering energy, vision, and fearlessness in tight matches. Silverware may be a stretch, but City could pose a real threat in knockout competitions. Their focus, however, remains on consolidating their top-flight status and making their home ground a tough place to visit. Winger Trevor Mokwena is tipped to be Durban City's attacking spark in their debut Premiership campaign. 'Shah Rukh Khan Said Sabse Bakwas Hai': When Sanjay Leela Bhansali Slammed Devdas BGM Composer

Composer Monty Sharma reveals he postponed his wedding five times while working on Devdas with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, calling the filmmaker short-tempered. Devdas background score composer Monty Sharma has worked closely with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on several iconic projects, but behind the scenes, it hasn't always been smooth sailing. In a new interview, the musician opened up about what it's really like to collaborate with Bhansali – calling him demanding, sharp, and at times, unpredictable. Sharma, who worked on the background score of Devdas and composed music for films like Black and Saawariya, said that while Bhansali gave him creative freedom, he also pushed him to the edge more than once. Recalling the intense pressure during the making of Devdas, Sharma revealed, 'I had postponed my wedding 5 times for Devdas." Things got so hectic that he hadn't even locked in a venue with just two days left until his wedding. That's when he got a call from Bhansali, who was unhappy with the music. 'He called and said, 'Shah Rukh saw the thing and he said 'sabse bakwas background hai (it's the worst background).' What have you done Monty?' I was shocked. I said, 'Sanjay ji, you have listened to the whole thing. How can you say that?'" When Sharma rushed to the studio, he realised the issue wasn't the score, but the mix. 'I told him, 'Sanjay ji, you don't do all of this, this is not your cup of tea.' That entire thing was redone then," he said. Describing Bhansali's temperament, Sharma called him 'short-tempered" and said that even when he wasn't directly shouting, everyone around could feel the heat. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for being strict and intense on set, something Ranbir Kapoor experienced early in his career. While assisting Bhansali on Black and later acting in Saawariya, Ranbir said the director could be tough and demanding. He once shared that Bhansali made him kneel for hours and even hit him at times. Though it was a tough experience, Ranbir admitted it helped shape him as an actor and taught him discipline from the start. About Devdas Devdas (2002), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is considered o ne of the most visually grand and emotionally intense films in Indian cinema. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit, the film was based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic Bengali novel. Known for its opulent sets, elaborate costumes, and powerful performances, Devdas received critical acclaim and became a cultural landmark. Trump Approval Rating 46%: Less Than Half The Country Approves Of President's Handling Of Economy, Cryptocurrency

President Donald Trump's approval rating continues to trend below 50% with voters unsure about several key items such as tariffs, the economy and the recent passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill. Here's a look at where voters stand on certain key issues. What Happened: The recent passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill and ongoing negotiations with countries over tariffs has voters reconsidering whether they approve of the current president's first six months in office. A new Emerson College poll shows Trump with a 46% approval rating and 47% disapproval rating for his first six months in office. The approval rating was up one percentage point from June with the disapproval rating also up one percentage point from June. Trending: Be part of the breakthrough that could replace plastic as we know it— Trump's approval rating rose slightly from June, marking the first increase after seeing the president's approval rating go from 49% in January to 48% in February and March, to 45% in April and June. "About six months into the second Trump administration, the president's approval rating has stabilized in the mid-40s, while his disapproval has steadily increased about a point each month since the inauguration and now stands at 47%," Emerson College Polling Executive Director Spencer Kimball said. Among voters, Trump's approval rating was highest among the demographics of men (53%), white voters (52%) and voters over 70 (53%). Trump's approval rating was lowest among independent voters (38%), women (40%), Hispanics (38%) and Black voters (25%). By category, Trump scored a 51% disapproval rating on his handling of the economy, with a 41% approval rating. While Trump's approval rating was up from 37% in the 100-day poll for handling the economy, his disapproval rating was also up two percentage points. Voters also showed only a 25% approval for Trump's handling of cryptocurrency, with a 39% disapproval rating. Both figures were up four percentage points from a previous poll. On tariffs, 50% of voters said they disapproved of Trump's handling, while 36% said they It's Important: The latest poll shows that Trump scores below average marks for the handling of the economy and cryptocurrency, which might be impacting his overall approval rating. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act could also be weighing on the overall approval rating for Trump. Thirty-nine percent of voters said they think the One Big Beautiful Bill will have a negative impact on their lives, compared to 33% who think it will have a positive effect. Nine percent said they think it will have no impact on their life. The economy is the top issue for voters at 31% of the vote, outranking democracy (23%), immigration (15%) and health care (9%). The latest poll comes with Trump recently praising "crypto week" as members of Congress took up several bills to advance the sector. The price of Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) has hit several all-time highs since Trump won the 2024 election and took office. The low approval rating for his handling of cryptocurrency could be related to the lack of an official Bitcoin purchase for the strategic reserve he promised earlier this year. Crypto investors also want more regulation passed and more support from the U.S. government on items like no taxes on capital gains. Trump's latest approval ratings came shortly before the S&P 500, which is tracked by the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:SPY), hit new all-time highs on Monday. The poll serves as a reminder that even with the stock market and Bitcoin at all-time highs, many voters are unhappy with the way Trump is handling the economy and cryptocurrency sector, as there could be trouble ahead. Trump says he may skip G-20 summit in South Africa, cites policy disapproval

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump said on July 29 he might skip the upcoming Group of 20 (G-20) leaders' summit in South Africa in November and send someone else to represent the United States, citing his disapproval of South African policies. "I think maybe I'll send somebody else because I've had a lot of problems with South Africa. They have some very bad policies," Mr Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. Mr Trump has taken issue with South African domestic and foreign policies - ranging from its land policy to its case accusing Israel of genocide in the US ally's war in Gaza. Mr Trump signed an executive order in February to cut US financial assistance to South Africa. In May, Mr Trump confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa with false claims of white genocide and land seizures during a White House meeting. Earlier in 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio also boycotted a G-20 foreign ministers' meeting in South Africa, which has the G-20 presidency from December 2024 to November 2025. Washington, both under Mr Trump and former President Joe Biden, has complained about the case brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice, where it accused Israel of genocide over its military assault in Gaza. Israel's assault has killed tens of thousands, caused a hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza's entire population and also led to accusations of war crimes at the International Criminal Court. Israel denies the accusations and casts its Gaza offensive as self-defence after a deadly October 2023 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 people and in which over 250 were taken hostage. Diplomatic relations between the US and South Africa have also been strained under Mr Trump due to South Africa's Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policies to address the legacy of centuries of racial inequality. Mr Ramaphosa, who has urged Mr Trump to attend the G-20 summit, rejects Washington's claims that South Africa will use its land policy to arbitrarily confiscate white-owned land. REUTERS
