UP inaugurates First Green Hydrogen Plant, highlights potential for clean energy

Uttar Pradesh inaugurated its first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur on Sunday, positioning the state to explore new avenues in renewable energy production. The facility, developed by Torrent Group at Khanimpur, is only the second of its kind in India and aims to contribute to cleaner energy solutions and reduced carbon emissions. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, speaking at the inauguration, described green hydrogen as 'energy of the future' and emphasised its potential to supplement traditional renewable sources such as solar and hydropower. He noted that Uttar Pradesh's abundant water resources provide favourable conditions for hydrogen production, which involves splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. The new plant will initially focus on blending green hydrogen with compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) to provide cleaner fuel for household and industrial use. Torrent Group already operates a CNG facility in Gorakhpur and supplies PNG in 16 districts. Officials highlighted that the project aligns with India's broader clean energy goals, including the government's target of 22,000 MW of renewable energy in Uttar Pradesh, of which 6,000 MW has already been achieved. Hydrogen energy, while currently expensive, is expected to become more affordable with technological advancements and economies of scale. During his address, the Chief Minister called for minimising carbon emissions from everyday activities, citing examples such as the adoption of LED street lighting to cut energy use and the shift away from traditional biomass cooking fuels. He also linked environmental degradation and climate change to delayed rainfall, deforestation, and the overuse of chemical fertilisers. Representatives from Torrent Group described Uttar Pradesh as a favourable destination for investment due to policy reforms and improved business conditions. They called the Gorakhpur facility the country's largest city gas distribution project involving green hydrogen integration. The event was attended by public representatives, officials, and industry leaders. On the occasion, a Rudraksha sapling was planted to promote environmental awareness alongside the push for clean energy development.

Logistics chaos in China shrinks Dangote's 4,000-truck rollout to just 450

The highly anticipated deployment of 4,000 trucks fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery was derailed on Friday due to glitches with Chinese logistics that affected supply schedules. The Dangote Petroleum Refinery plans to deploy a fleet of 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks to enhance its supply chain efficiency. Delays in logistics from China have caused setbacks in receiving the vehicles, with only 450 trucks delivered so far. Efforts are underway to mitigate concerns over job losses in Nigeria's fuel distribution sector due to the new CNG truck deployment. The refinery has only received 450 vehicles thus far, rather than the entire fleet. Its initial goal of 600 will be greatly surpassed by the 150 more that are expected to arrive next week. This new development was verified by a top Dangote Group official who spoke to Punch under anonymity. A lack of ships that can carry the cars from China to Nigeria is the reason for the delay, the official disclosed. 'There are not enough ships coming from China to handle 4,000 trucks and 4,000 tankers,' he relayed during the interview. '200 arrived in the first ship. Another 250 have been offloaded now. We are expecting 150 on the vessel next week,' he added. This setback comes amidst reports that indicated that the plan would be initiated on the 15th of August 2025. Thus far, within the last couple of weeks, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced that it had begun receiving its fleet of 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks. 'The first consignment of trucks recently departed Apapa Port and was formally received at the refinery site in Ibeju-Lekki by the Vice-President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Ltd, Devakumar Edwin,' the refinery revealed via a statement on the 10th of August. 'The fleet of fuel tankers, being imported through Apapa Port, represents a significant capital investment estimated at N720bn,' the refinery noted. Last week, the Dangote Group held a high-level meeting with major industry players, including the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria. The meeting was intended to quell concerns of job losses, as industry players have long sounded the alarm that the refinery's plans could disrupt the current fuel distribution network in Nigeria. The meeting revealed plans by the refinery to protect the roles of marketers and tanker drivers, reducing concerns of widespread displacement in the industry. Dangote refinery cost reduction plan Despite the setback, the company seems to be dedicated to its ambitious plan, announced in June, to deploy 4,000 CNG-powered vehicles throughout Nigeria. The plan intends to reduce yearly gasoline distribution expenditures by about ₦1.7 trillion and improve petroleum supply chain efficiency. The refinery, which is already running at around 85% of its 650,000 barrels-per-day capacity, sees the CNG-powered fleet as a cost-effective and ecologically benign alternative. Compared to typical diesel trucks, the CNG vehicles are estimated to save distribution costs by roughly 40% while simultaneously cutting carbon emissions, aligning the corporation with global energy transition trends. The adoption of CNG vehicles marks a significant milestone for Nigeria's downstream economy.

‘Big step taken today': Yogi Adityanath inaugurates UP's first green hydrogen project

Claiming that 'a big step has been taken today', Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated the state's first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur, with the project aiming to produce 72,000 tonnes of green fuel in a year. The plant launched by Torrent Group will blend hydrogen with natural gas for distribution, and is being touted as 'a significant step in India's energy transition'. 'This is the first such plant in Uttar Pradesh and only second in the country. A big step has been taken today as this plant would ensure blending of green hydrogen with CNG (compressed natural gas) and PNG (piped natural gas),' the Chief Minister said. As a pilot project, the plant will mix 2% green hydrogen with natural gas (both CNG and PNG) for city gas distribution systems. 'The solar power is available only till there is sunlight. But this is the future source of energy. Research is going on to ensure that electricity is generated from hydrogen for round-the-clock supply. This new energy might be costly for the time being but just like mobile tariffs, it would become cheaper in the future,' said Adityanath. Speaking on the issue of climate change, he said, 'The rainfall, which is taking place now, should have occurred in July itself. It is all because of the climate change which is affecting the crops and how humans are playing not just with the environment but also lives.' But this can be changed with the use of organic farming and the use of alternative sources of energy, he added. 'Uttar Pradesh has a great potential in green hydrogen energy because of its water resources when compared to other states,' the CM said. Green hydrogen is hydrogen gas produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity produced through renewable energy sources. The green here doesn't mean that the produced hydrogen gas is of green colour; it is a reference to zero usage of fossil fuels in the production of hydrogen gas. Officials informed that the 2 MW renewable energy plant will generate hydrogen through electrolysis, reducing carbon emissions by around 500 tonnes. The state came up with its Green Hydrogen Policy last year, wherein the government will provide incentives and rebates for setting up of green hydrogen and green ammonia production facilities. The policy offers a 30% capital subsidy which will be up to 40 per cent for the first four projects in the state. Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan, who also attended the programme, termed the project a 'game-changer' that would script a new energy revolution in the district, while Sahjanwa MLA Pradeep Shukla said such projects were steering UP towards becoming a developed state by 2047. The CM also planted a Rudraksha sapling at the site, symbolising the state's commitment to environmental protection. — PTI inputs

CM Adityanath inaugurates Torrent Group's green hydrogen plant in UP

Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group's green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh was on Sunday inaugurated by state chief minister Yogi Adityanath. The project, jointly developed by Torrent Group entities Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, will have an annual production capacity of 72,000 tonnes per annum, the group said in a statement. "The Green Hydrogen produced at the plant will be blended with natural gas in Torrent Gas' City Gas Distribution infrastructure in Gorakhpur, maintaining its concentration up to 2 per cent," it said. The green hydrogen blended with natural gas will be further supplied to domestic households, CNG stations and industries in the region through the already laid network of natural gas pipelines. "Torrent's green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur is the first Green Hydrogen plant in Uttar Pradesh and is also the largest Green Hydrogen and Natural Gas blending project in the City Gas Distribution sector in the country," the statement said. Torrent Gas has licence to provide Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar and Kushinagar districts. Torrent has already set up 32 CNG stations and supplies gas to 12,000+ domestic households and 73 industries and commercial establishments in the region and intends to grow its gas distribution infrastructure in the region significantly. Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced via electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources like solar, wind or hydropower. Unlike hydrogen made from fossil fuels, green hydrogen has no direct carbon emissions, making it a cleaner energy carrier. Blending it with natural gas reduces carbon footprint, utilises the already laid natural gas infrastructure and helps to ramp up early demand for hydrogen. Speaking on the occasion, Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh has a target of 1 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production, for which it has set up a specific policy that will support potential investments. With the inauguration of this plant, green hydrogen has become a part of the life of common people as it will directly reach their kitchens and vehicles. the statement quoted him as saying. He also mentioned that availability of PNG has brought great relief to the people of Gorakhpur, especially the housewives due to the convenience, safety and savings it offers. Increasing use of CNG as transportation fuel has helped battle pollution and save costs for the masses. Various industries and commercial establishments in Gorakhpur are also now using piped natural gas and reaping the benefits of cheaper and economical fuel. Jinal Mehta, Director, Torrent Group, said, "Torrent Group is committed to making a significant contribution in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for India's Energy Transition and National Green Hydrogen Mission. The commissioning of Torrent Power's Green Hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur and its integration into Torrent Gas' City Gas Distribution infrastructure in Gorakhpur, is a milestone in this endeavour. It marks the culmination of the first initiative in our long-term vision of setting up large scale green hydrogen plants in the country for various use cases including for blending with natural gas in the CGD network." Blending Green Hydrogen into Gorakhpur's gas grid is a step in achieving practical, scalable pathway to net-zero target of the country. It lowers emissions, builds demand for green molecules, and creates a platform for deeper de-carbonisation in transport and industry, he said.
