Dodgers put Tanner Scott on IL, but hopeful he returns this season
The Dodgers still want, and need, to acquire a reliever in the next nine days. But, at some point after July 31 trade deadline, they are hopeful of adding Tanner Scott back into the bullpen mix too. In what could be the latest bullet the Dodgers have dodged on the injury front recently, Scott was put on the injured list Tuesday with what was initially described as 'elbow inflammation' — preserving hope that his season might not be over after exiting Monday's game with a 'stinging sensation' in his forearm. As of Tuesday afternoon, manager Dave Roberts and general manager Brandon Gomes said the club was awaiting its medical staff to fully review the results of an MRI exam that Scott had earlier in the day. But both noted that Scott, who turned 31 on Tuesday, reported improvement in his elbow compared to how he felt Monday, when he walked off the mound flexing his throwing arm after spiking a slider in the dirt during the ninth inning of the Dodgers' series-opening win over the Minnesota Twins. 'I'm still hopeful that we'll get Tanner back at some point,' Roberts added. Scott has underwhelmed in the first season of his four-year, $72-million contract with the team, posting a 4.14 ERA in 47 outings with only 19 saves in 26 opportunities. However, losing him for the season would have been a significant blow to a Dodgers team that has already seen key reliever Evan Phillips undergo Tommy John surgery, and navigated around long-term injuries to Blake Treinen (who is nearing the completion of a rehab assignment), Michael Kopech (who is hopeful of returning from the 60-day IL when eligible in late August) and Brusdar Graterol (who is still expected back from an offseason shoulder surgery that has sidelined him all year). 'He's not throwing the baseball as well as he's gonna be throwing the baseball,' Roberts said, maintaining hope not only that Scott will return but also flash improved form down the stretch this year. 'But just to have somebody that's there, that takes the baseball, has been huge.' Of course, Scott's troubles (along with similar scuffles from fellow offseason signing Kirby Yates) have highlighted the need for the Dodgers to target another high-leverage reliever at this year's deadline and bolster a bullpen that ranks 24th in ERA and a far-and-away first in innings pitched. Before Scott's injury Monday, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said 'any time a needle-moving player is available, we're gonna get involved,' when asked how aggressive the team will be in addressing its bullpen need. To that end, there should be no shortage of attractive options, with as many as nine top relievers expected to be available to some degree — from Minnesota Twins flamethrower Jhoan Durán, to multi-time All-Stars such as Emmanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians and David Bednar of the Pittsburgh Pirates, to established veteran closers such as the Tampa Bay Rays' Pete Fairbanks and Baltimore Orioles' Félix Bautista, and maybe even young Athletics star Mason Miller. Outside of St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Ryan Helsley, however, almost all of this year's biggest relief targets are under team control beyond this season. "The prices are always crazy come the deadline,' Gomes said. 'That's why we did everything we could this offseason to not have to be in the position to buy.' The Dodgers do have internal depth they like. This week, the team called up Edgardo Henriquez, a hard-throwing right-hander who missed the start of the year with a broken foot, and Alexis Diaz, the former All-Star closer for the Cincinnati Reds. Friedman also suggested that, with Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki working toward returns from injury, there could be surplus starting pitchers who eventually get moved into the bullpen later this year. 'We feel like we're gonna get to a place where we're not gonna have enough starting pitcher spots for our starting pitching,' Friedman said. 'So there could be some spillover of that into the bullpen.' However, adding another high-leverage arm to the back end of the group remains a priority. Had Scott been lost for the year, that burden only would've grown. 'Once we get Dr. [Neal] ElAttrache's take on it, we'll obviously have more clarity,' said Roberts, who plans to go closer-by-committee in Scott's absence. Felon who allegedly barreled car through LA nightclub crowd faces 37 attempted murder charges
A convicted felon who allegedly drove his car through a crowd of people outside a Los Angeles nightclub over the weekend has been indicted. Fernando Ramirez, 29, of San Clemente, faces 37 charges of attempted murder and 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, all felonies, from a crash that left 37 injured outside the Vermont Hollywood nightclub Saturday night. "We understand that this brazen act has shaken the community and, but for the good grace of God, this could have been a mass casualty incident," LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said, according to WPLG. Hochman said eight people suffered "great bodily injury." "When he drove that car onto that sidewalk, he aimed it at a whole sea of pedestrians that were in front of him on the sidewalk at 2 a.m.," Hochman said. The victims were mostly women waiting to enter the Hollywood nightclub when Ramirez allegedly ran them down in his Nissan Versa. The vehicle also traveled over a food vending cart and a valet stand. Adding to the chaos, bystanders reportedly pulled Ramirez from his disabled vehicle and assaulted him. During the altercation, a man pulled a gun and shot Ramirez. Police are still searching for that suspect. Ramirez has a lengthy criminal history and was out of prison on parole at the time of the crash. KNBC reported he was convicted of felony battery from an attack on a man outside a Whole Foods in 2019 and sentenced to prison the following year. It is unclear whether his parole release was related to that conviction. The report said Ramirez has at least "11 criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to felonies" since 2014, citing the Orange County District Attorney's Office. The 2014 charge was gang-related, and Ramirez has a pending 2024 drunk driving case and a pending 2022 domestic violence case that are both unresolved. He faces life in prison if convicted on the charges related to the car ramming.

Veteran G Marcus Smart signs with Lakers following buyout
July 23 - The Los Angeles Lakers officially signed veteran point guard Marcus Smart on Tuesday, three days after it was reported he agreed to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards. The former NBA Defensive Player of the Year signed a two-year, $11 million deal with Los Angeles after clearing waivers, ESPN reported. The Lakers did not confirm the financial terms. "Adding a player like Marcus Smart to our roster allows us to compete at the highest level," Lakers president of basketball operations and GM Rob Pelinka said in a statement. "Marcus epitomizes what it means to prioritize winning above all else -- whether that's making huge plays on the defensive end or hitting critical shots in key moments of the most intense games. He knows and understands playoff winning and will be a key leadership voice in our group. Surrounding our stars with two-way players like Marcus is critical to our overall vision of how we want to play and win next season. This is an exciting player acquisition, for sure." At an introductory press conference Tuesday, Smart said Lakers star Luka Doncic helped recruit him to Los Angeles. "When you get a guy like Luka calling ... checking on you, trying to see where you're at, to see if you want to come join something special that he's trying to cook up over here," Smart said. "For him to say that he can really use my help, that meant a lot." Smart was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies prior to the 2023-24 season and played in 19 games before he was again dealt to the Wizards (15 games) this past February. He averaged 9.0 points and 3.2 assists overall. But he's best known for his first nine NBA seasons in Boston, during which he helped the Celtics reach the postseason every year. He was a three-time First-Team All-Defense selection and won the Defensive Player of the Year Award for the 2021-22 campaign. In 635 career games with the Celtics (2014-23), Grizzlies (2023-25) and Wizards, Smart has averaged 10.6 points, 4.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. --Field Level Media

Dodgers' Tanner Scott (elbow) placed on IL; Alexis Diaz recalled
July 23 - For the first time since 2021, reliever Tanner Scott will be spending time on the injured list. The Los Angeles Dodgers placed him on the 15-day IL on Tuesday with left elbow inflammation. The Dodgers recalled reliever Alexis Diaz from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move. Scott suffered the injury Monday evening in a closing opportunity vs. the Minnesota Twins. After missing with a slider in the dirt, the lefty reliever looked uncomfortable. Manager Dave Roberts visited the mound and pulled Scott in favor of Kirby Yates. Yates earned his third save of the year in a 5-2 Dodgers victory. It has been an inconsistent first season in LA for Scott, a 9-year veteran. He has 19 saves, but he leads the majors with seven blown saves, and his 4.14 ERA is the highest since his first season in Miami (2022, 4.31). Scott did not allow an earned run in five postseason appearances for San Diego last season and signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Dodgers in the offseason. Diaz, a former closer in Cincinnati, was acquired by the Dodgers in late May. He spent one day with the major league club in July but was sent back to Triple-A when Tyler Glasnow came off the injured list on July 9. --Field Level Media

Convicted felon arrested in Hemet for impersonating police officer
A convicted felon impersonating a police officer was arrested in Hemet on Monday. Police said that the man, Marshal Goodnight, was riding a motorcycle when he was pulled over after he was seen activating emergency lights and committing several vehicle code violations, said a post on Facebook from the Hemet Police Department. Officers made contact with Goodnight, who they said was "wearing a uniform closely resembling a local law enforcement agency, along with a duty belt and what appeared to be a Glock-style pistol." Goodnight was taken into custody, and officers found that the weapon was actually carrying two fully-functional taser electronic control devices, an ASP baton and a container of OC spray, more commonly known as pepper spray. The uniform, outfitted with patches similar to those seen on Riverside County Sheriff's Department uniforms, displayed badges that read "traffic" and "traffic control." He also had a hat that said "traffic unit" and carried a notepad that said "sheriff" on the front. Officers also found handcuffs and other items that a law enforcement officer would typically carry. His motorcycle, which had flashing emergency lights, was also adorned with "traffic" and "public safety" stickers, and is black-and-white, similar to a traditional law enforcement vehicle. Police found that the suspect is a convicted felon who is prohibited from possessing a firearm or related weapons, and that he is not licensed to provide security services through California's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the Facebook post said. He was booked on several charges including unlawful taser use and possession, unlawful possession of a leaded cane or baton, unlawful use of tear gas and impersonating a police officer, police said. Locals have expressed some concern over the matter, including what they're supposed to do if the person who they're interacting with isn't actually an officer of the law. "He's wearing a belt with an actual firearm and a taser, so I mean, you would think this guy's legit," said David Luna. "He could have been robbing, he could have been pulling people over unlawfully, and God only knows." Police say that if someone is concerned that they're not speaking to an actual officer, they can call dispatch to verify whether or not they are. People are also advised to pull over in well-lit, highly populated and safe areas and to ask for identification.
