Geely adds a feature almost every new car in Australia already has
The Geely EX5 is one of a handful of new cars on sale without smartphone mirroring, but it's now getting it… with a catch. From today, Geely Auto Australia is rolling out an over-the-air (OTA) software update that adds wired and wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity. This is in line with a promise it made earlier this year to roll out the smartphone mirroring system during the third quarter of this year. However, Android Auto connectivity, which was previously set to be rolled out later this year, is now not set to become available until the first quarter of 2026. It, too, will be available as an OTA update. Apple CarPlay is displayed on the EX5's 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Fortunately, Geely has ensured the climate controls remain visible on the screen while you're using Apple CarPlay. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new Geely. Click here to get a great deal. Supplied Credit: CarExpert In some other Chinese vehicles that lack physical climate controls like the EX5, you have to exit out of Apple CarPlay to be able to adjust climate settings, or rely on voice assistants which aren't always reliable. Geely has also confirmed the EX5 is gaining support for the below display languages: Chinese (Simplified) Chinese (Traditional) French Indonesian Norwegian Polish Portuguese Russian Spanish Thai Turkish While the EX5 was one of a handful of vehicles on sale in Australia without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, Tesla's popular Model 3 sedan and Model Y mid-size SUV famously don't offer these features. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Despite arriving here a few months prior to the Geely, the rival Leapmotor C10 still does without either system, though unlike Tesla the Chinese brand has plans to add both. It's understood the C10's internal processors lack the required chips to run smartphone mirroring software, which means Apple CarPlay and Android Auto won't be available to existing owners via an OTR update. Fellow Chinese brand LDV has traditionally only offered Apple CarPlay, something it has been changing with recent updates to the T60 ute and D90 large SUV. However, some LDV models like the MIFA people mover still lack Android Auto. The Geely EX5 has gotten off to a strong start in Australia, even without Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. To the end of July, Geely has delivered 2335 EX5 vehicles in Australia this year, leaving the Leapmotor C10 (352) and Deepal S07 (139) in the dust, and even pushing past the pioneering BYD Atto 3 (2130). Holden Commodore hoon in the US lucky to be uninjured, still have pants after silly stunt
The Holden Commodore attracts its share of reckless hoons in Australia, and it evidently does the same in the US. Footage shared by ATL Muscle shows three examples of the Pontiac G8 – the short-lived rebadged version of the Holden VE Commodore sold in North America – at an Alabama venue called H-Town, advertised as America's biggest burnout/slide pit. While it's good to see hoons not clogging up streets, as they do with the all too common street takeovers in the US, this venue doesn't appear to enforce any safety standards. The video shows all three G8s sliding around as onlookers stand dangerously close to them. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new car. Click here to get a great deal. Passengers are also hanging out of the windows of all three sedans, in some cases with a leg swinging by the side of the car. One of these passengers can be seen putting too much of his body out of the car, to the point where he's hanging onto the inside of the G8 by his feet. He's also seen dropping what appears to be a camera. After another slide around the pit, he can be seen tumbling out of the car and then rolling on the ground. To add insult to injury, his pants also slid down, leaving him presumably embarrassed and a little bit bruised while sitting on the pavement in his underwear in front of a crowd of onlookers. Given he can be seen sitting up without difficulty, it appears he didn't sustain any serious injuries… except to his pride, and possibly some of the property he dropped out of the window. The Pontiac G8 was the second of four attempts by Holden to sell vehicles in the US via one of General Motors' other brands. Sold from model years 2008 to 2009, until bankruptcy proceedings forced GM to shutter the Pontiac division, the G8 came after the Pontiac GTO. This was a rebadged Holden Monaro, sold during model years 2004 to 2006. After the G8's demise, Holden exported the WM Caprice to the US, where it was sold as the Caprice PPV for law enforcement agencies from 2011 to 2017. The VF Commodore was also exported to the US, exclusively with V8 power, as the Chevrolet SS for model years 2014 to 2017. 2026 Volkswagen T-Roc: Toyota-fighting hybrid SUV teased
The second-generation Volkswagen T-Roc small SUV – with new hybrid tech – has been teased by the German automaker ahead of its official reveal, with its Australian arrival expected in the second half of 2026. A single image of the new five-door, five-seat T-Roc – a rival to the Toyota Corolla Cross and C-HR, Hyundai Kona and Nissan Qashqai, among others – was published by Volkswagen, the vehicle covered in yellow and black graphics to leave some powder in the keg for its imminent full reveal. The automaker is expected to complete the picture ahead of September's IAA Mobility Show in Munich, Germany – where a raft of new models is expected to debut, including the Volkswagen ID.2X small SUV. The new generation will replace the current T-Roc, which was revealed in 2017 but didn't arrive in Australia until 2020. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new Volkswagen. Click here to get a great deal. Volkswagen Australia is yet to confirm timing and details of the new T-Roc's local launch. Like the first generation, the new version will be related to the Golf but will use newer MQB Evo underpinnings used in the current Mk8.5 Golf. Taking on the Toyota Corolla Cross and C-HR, the new T-Roc will be the first to use a new hybrid powertrain set to be offered in the Golf and the larger Tiguan SUV before spreading to other models throughout the broader Volkswagen Group. It will operate in the same way as Toyota's hybrid set-up, where both a petrol engine and an electric motor will have the ability to drive the wheels. Reports suggest the new Volkswagen hybrid system will use a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, with power and torque outputs set to range from 150kW/350Nm through to 200kW/400Nm. The current T-Roc in Australian has outputs ranging from 110kW/250Nm from the 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine in the entry level Life and Style model grades. A larger 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine in the R-Line makes 140kW/320Nm, and the flagship R tops the range with a turbo 2.0-litre producing 221kW and 400Nm. Volkswagen has confirmed a new T-Roc R is launching in 2027. The new T-Roc will be the start of Volkswagen's revised strategy after betting large on electric vehicles (EVs), only to see the rise of hybrids in key markets, including the United States (US), as well as Australia. Hybrid sales in the US increased 36.7 per cent in 2024. A total of 1.9 million hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles were sold there last year and further hybrid growth is expected this year, according to the US Energy Information Administration. In Australia, hybrid sales grew 76 per cent last year, with sales up a further 14.9 per cent in the first half of 2025. Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer told British publication Autocar earlier this year the T-Roc's hybrid powertrain was an important step to global sales. "HEV has also become a big theme in the US specifically. It's a technology that everybody said was not necessary anymore, but now with the BEV slowdown in the US, the balance is [moving towards] HEVs." "We needed to do it anyway, because South America has a need for an HEV drivetrain – and the T-Roc is built in South America for South America, and also in China." Australian T-Rocs are currently made in Lisbon, Portugal, where the automaker has confirmed it will manufacture the ID.1 city-sized electric car from 2027. MG's first ute to feature independent coil-spring rear suspension
MG Motor Australia has confirmed its first ute, the MG U9, will bring independent multi-link coil-sprung rear suspension when it's launched here next month, giving it a key point of difference to other dual-cab utes including its recently launched twin, the LDV Terron 9. Indeed, independent rear suspension (IRS) will be the only major mechanical difference between the Terron 9 and U9, which will also come with an MG-exclusive grille, U9 badging, body-coloured lower front bumper, new wheels and a slightly revised interior including a traditional console-mounted gear selector instead of a steering column-mounted stalk shifter. However, the battery-electric version of the MG's sister model, the eTerron 9, will also bring independent multi-link rear suspension when it goes on sale here, which CarExpert understands won't happen before the U9's launch. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new MG. Click here to get a great deal. Despite the fitment of IRS, Australian government homologation documents confirm the MG U9 will still offer towing and payload capabilities to match its key rivals including the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, as promised by MG. Designed to improve ride comfort and road holding, IRS is commonly seen in passenger cars but is rare in the ute world, where rear leaf springs are employed almost exclusively to handle heavy loads in the tub. That said, there are several utes available with coil-sprung rear-ends, including the Ranger Raptor, Nissan Navara, GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV, and certain versions of the LDV T60 and KGM Musso, but all of them have solid or 'live' rear axles that lack independent rear wheel control. The BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is one of the few exceptions to this rule in the mid-size ute segment, by featuring independent multi-link rear coil suspension. MG says the U9's multi-link IRS system was designed specifically for Australian conditions, tested on urban and rural roads as well as highways and trails, and will provide "exceptional comfort, grip, and handling for versatile performance across a range of on and off-road conditions". "We researched the Australian market significantly for our MG U9 product, and we share Australia's love for the outdoor, sport and adventure lifestyle, but often the utes they drive just don't offer the comfort they want or deserve," said MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO, Peter Ciao. "I wanted to offer a ute with no compromise on driving comfort or capability. And we've done this by engineering our multi-link rear suspension platform specifically for the demands of our local drivers". MG says the U9's IRS was benchmarked against its competitors by local engineering development teams and will be unique to Australian-delivered examples of the Chinese brand's first ute, which will be a key model in its previously stated plan to become a top-three auto brand Down Under by 2030. "The MG U9 meets our desire to offer top quality, excellent comfort and performance, rewarding Australian customers for their trust in the MG Motor brand. It underpins our strategy to become one of Australia's top five automotive brands in the near term," said Mr Ciao. MG claims multi-link rear suspension transforms the U9 into a ute that delivers more stability when carrying loads, as well as a smoother, more composed ride for all occupants in all driving situations. Specifically, it says key benefits of the U9's multi-link rear suspension include: MG has received Australian Design Rule certification for two versions of the U9 dual-cab, both powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 160kW of power (peak torque isn't in approval documents, but Chinese data suggests it will be 520Nm). Both will come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and what's referred to as an automatic all-wheel drive system. One has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 3500kg and a tare mass of 2398kg, from which we can calculate a payload figure of 1102kg. The other variant has a GVM of 3320kg and a tare mass of 2498kg, resulting in a payload figure of 822kg. The MG U9 measures a sizeable 5500mm long, 1997mm wide and 1860mm tall on a 3300mm wheelbase, while an optional luggage rack bumps height up to 1874mm. That makes it significantly longer and wider than the top-selling Ranger 4×4 dual-cab, which measures 5403mm long, 1918mm wide and 1886mm tall on a 3270mm wheelbase. Dual-cab Rangers also offer a payload figure of between 929kg and 1018kg depending on the variant. Ground clearance for the MG is 220mm, and the U9 will ride on either 18- or optional 20-inch wheels. Other previously confirmed available features for the MG U9 include a flip-down rear tailgate step, massaging driver's seat, "flexible seat functionality", a JBL sound system, and even walkthrough cab/tub capability. Unlike its LDV Terron 9 twin, an electric vehicle (EV) powertrain won't become available for the MG U9 in the short-term. Instead, MG is understood to be planning a plug-in hybrid powertrain to match the Shark, Cannon Alpha and Ranger. Pricing is yet to be announced, but MG has confirmed the U9 will be backed by a shorter warranty than the rest of its range, and it's now taking expressions of interest ahead of first customer deliveries around November, following its official launch in September. Mahindra builds a Batmobile, and it's not just for Bruce Wayne
We may be between Batman films, but Mahindra has gone ahead and launched a special Batman edition of one of its models. Fortunately, Mahindra didn't use a frumpy Pik-Up as the basis for its Batman-themed special-edition model, instead using the angular, ultra-modern BE 6 electric SUV. "The BE 6 has always been about boldness and forward thinking. With the Batman Edition, we wanted to go further — to create something so personal, so visually arresting, that owning it feels like owning a piece of cinematic history," said Pratap Bose, chief design and creative officer for the automotive and farm sectors of Mahindra & Mahindra. "We've obsessed over even the smallest detail, so that every time you look at it, you discover something new." CarExpert can save you thousands on a new Mahindra Click here to get a great deal. And indeed, there's a bevy of little details once you get past the obvious changes like those enormous Batman decals on the front doors. Externally, there are Bat emblems on the wheels, rear bumper, quarter panels and windows. Even the puddle lights show the Bat Signal… on the ground, of course, where the Caped Crusader would probably miss it. There's also a giant Bat emblem on the glass 'Infinity Roof', which he would most certainly see from any Gotham City rooftop. Then there are the non-Batman-specific details, like suspension and brake calipers finished in Alchemy Gold. This contrasts with the exterior paint, which is a custom Satin Black finish, as well as the exclusive black 20-inch wheels. Inside, there's a brushed gold 'halo' around the driver's cockpit, contrasting with the Charcoal leather instrument panel, and "race car inspired" door straps with Batman Edition branding. Gold accents can also be found on the steering wheel, infotainment controller, and electronic parking brake, with the suede and leather upholstery featuring gold sepia stitching. A brushed Alchemy Gold special-edition numbered plaque sits on the centre console. Of course, there's a bevy of Bat emblems inside too, including on the seats. Finally, Gothamites will hear you coming thanks to "Custom Batman inspired exterior engine sounds". Mahindra will build just 300 examples of the Batman Edition, which is based on the range-topping Pack Three. This features the larger 79kWh (instead of 59kWh) battery, and a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 210kW of power and 380Nm of torque. The BE 6 rides on MacPherson strut front and five-link rear suspension, with the Pack Three featuring adaptive dampers. Deliveries begin in India on September 20, 2025, which, in case you didn't know, is International Batman Day. That means Indian buyers can get their hands on one well before the next Batman film is released in 2027. Of course, that film – like The Batman, which premiered in 2022 – will star Robert Pattinson. Mahindra makes clear, however, that the BE 6 Batman Edition is inspired by Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy starring Christian Bale. The BE 6 is part of the Electric Origin series of Mahindra SUVs, which also includes the XEV 9e, and the brand confirmed late last year it plans a "phased, calibrated international rollout of the Electric Origin series, starting with right-hand drive markets". The Batman Edition isn't the first superhero-themed special-edition vehicle. Hyundai offered an Iron Man version of its Kona, introduced here in 2019, which featured an extensive array of changes to make it look like something the superhero would drive. That included a matte grey and red exterior, unique wheels and bonnet, and even details like Iron Man emblems on the puddle lights, Stark Industries logos on the seats, and custom graphics for the screens and head-up display. In 2018, Renault also offered a Super Hero Edition of its Kwid in India. This came in two versions, inspired by Iron Man and Captain America respectively. Click an image to view the full gallery.
