Benjamin Nygren Ajax clue accelerates Celtic transfer need as Adam Idah 'reality' made crystal clear
Brendan Rodgers is desperate to add to his champions and Charlie Mulgrew has backed call for wingers and another striker Benjamin Nygren's position against Ajax caught Charlie Mulgrew off guard as he admitted Celtic need TWO wingers if that is the role he will play under Brendan Rodgers. The Hoops boss has been vocal once more in his need to add reinforcements with fans desperate for key additions. The Premiership gets up and running this coming weekend while a huge Champions League two-legged play-off showdown is on the horizon as Celtic bid to dine at Europe's top table once again. Nygren has been one of the summer additions to date alongside Kieran Tierney, Ross Doohan, Shin Yamada, Hayato Inamura and Callum Osmand. The Sweden attacker was used in a No8 role rather than wide during the Como Cup and with a lack of depth in the winger position, Mulgrew understands why Yang has to remain at the club - despite interest - and they must add more reinforcements. Speaking on Go Radio, Mulgrew explained: "I said last week they need a winger. "After playing Ajax you seen Nygren playing as a kind of No8 midfielder. So you are thinking is that where he is going to play? So then you would think they need two wingers. "So I can understand why they wouldn't let Yang go. You can't let a winger go when you've not got any in the building or wingers ready to start and make an impact. "If Nygren is going to play as a No8 in the midfield area - I thought he came as a winger - then you need another two wingers. "So you need to keep a hold of Yang until you get replacements." Adam Idah has received the backing of the former Celtic stopper to hit the ground running this year but has told him he must improve key aspects of his game. He admits the reality of him being the main man weekly is something that only Rodgers and his staff will know and reckons pressure will come from the top due to his high price tag. Shin Yamada has arrived and looked lively against Al Ahli. He netted the winning penalty and had a goal ruled out for offside but as a 25-year-old, he won't be a development player and will play some role. But Mulgrew reckons another striker has to come through the door between now and the window slamming shut. He said: "He's [Yamada] a bit old for a development player so you would imagine he would come in and play some sort of role. "I didn't realise he was that old [25]. So he needs to come in and make a sort of impact. Maybe off the bench at the moment. "I have said it before - £9million for Adam Idah. "He will be the main striker for me this year. Then get another to back him up and see where they go from there." A caller then put the question about how much time you give the Republic of Ireland international. He continued: "I think Idah's hold up play needs a lot of improvement. "The reality is, I don't know how long they give him and how well he does in pre-season. "But you'd think they will give him the start of the season to see what he does. There is a lot of things to his game he needs to improve on. "The reality is when a club spend £9million on a striker, there is pressure from the board and people to play him. "But that only does last so long. Like you say, who knows? Only Brendan Rodgers and the staff in there would know."

The slight mistake Celtic made for first time in two years
The Premiership champions had the worst defeat of their pre-season with a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of the Dutch giants, before going on to improve with a victory over Al-Ahli to finish third in the Como Cup. It followed impressive victories over teams of a similar stature - Sporting Lisbon and Newcastle. But the main concern would be the goals against tally reading five. Rodgers detailed the slight error his players made in conceding one of the goals. He likes his side to go man-for-man to begin with from goal kicks before dropping into a zonal system. However, in this instance, they stayed man-to-man for too long. Read more: He told Celtic TV: 'What we tend to do is we will, in some games, go in a static position from a goal kick, man-to-man. 'But while we are in the game, we will then go more to a zonal. We made a little mistake in the last game, where we stayed in our man-to-man for too long, which opened up a little bit too much space, especially towards the end of the game. 'We lost a game in our build-up phase, the third goal, which I said to the players, 'listen, that's the first goal we have conceded in build-up in over two years that I have been here, so to do that with the risk we put in the game to play our football, it's really good, so let us learn from it.' 'It isn't a structural thing. It's about positioning, getting there early, and we will be fine.'

Celtic bid for transfer target ‘laughingly rejected'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CELTIC's opening bid for one of their latest transfer targets was "laughingly rejected" by the player's club, it's been reported. So far this summer the Hoops have welcomed in six new signings but Brendan Rodgers has been vocal in wanting more. After seeing his side lose 5-1 to Ajax in a pre-season friendly last week, the Celtic boss called on the board to show ambition in the remainder of the transfer window. But according to reports in the Netherlands, the Parkhead club's starting offer for winger Jakob Breum fell well below the asking price. Voetbal International is reporting that Go Ahead Eagles knocked back a bid of £1.3million for the 21-year-old earlier this summer - with the Hoops' offer described as being "laughingly rejected" by the club. Breum, a Danish under-21 international, has two years remaining on his contract and Go Ahead Eagles are in no rush to sell the wide man. Particularly not when Rangers are rumoured to be interested in their other star winger, Oliver Antman. Voetbal Interntional claim that Celtic have since returned with two improved offers but that they still haven't met Go Ahead's valuation. Attacking midfielder Breum joined the Dutch club two years ago from Odense in his homeland. He can operate as a left or right winger or a number ten, indeed flourishing in the latter role last season. After scoring three goals and providing three assists in his debut season in the Eredivisie, Breum switched to playing more centrally last year and the decision by then-boss Paul Simonis. Shock scenes as Celtic and Ajax fans clash during Como Cup friendly tournament in Italy He responded with 11 goals and six assists across all competitions, despite playing in six fewer games. Breum's valuation according to various sources online fluctuates between £4.3m (transfermarkt) and £6.5m (FotMob). It's believed Go Ahead want closer to the latter figure for the youngster. 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Celtic transfer bid 'laughingly rejected' as Kyogo suffers teething problems
The Hoops have been frustrated in their attempts to get more signings over the line Celtic have had THREE offers turfed out for winger Jakob Breum as Go Ahead Eagles stand firm. Danish star Breum, 21, has emerged as the Hoops' latest signing target as Brendan Rodgers seeks more firepower. Breum is one of the most exciting talents in the Eredivisie and lit up the Dutch top-flight with 11 goals and provided five assists. That's caught the attention of Parkhead scouts, and the Scottish champions kicked off negotiations earlier this month. But, as has been widely reported, the opening £1.5million offer was instantly snubbed, with Dutch magazine Voetbal International going as far as to say it was "laughingly rejected". It's believed Celts returned to the table with two improved offers, but the latest of £3m was also booted out by the Dutch Cup holders. Go Ahead have slapped a £6m price tag on the wide man's head and are in no rush to sell, with the player still under contract for another two years. Meanwhile ex- Celtic hero Kyogo is still finding his feet at Birmingham City following his quick-fire £10million exit from Rennes. The Japanese striker linked up with former teammate and compatriot Tomoki Iwata at St Andrew's in a bumper summer switch. Kyogo was given another runout in the penultimate pre-season friendly at Port Vale as the Blues coasted to a 2-0 victory. But the 30-year-old endured a frustrating 65 minutes as he struggled to test home goalkeeper Marko Marosi - despite making "some decisive movements". Reflecting on Kyogo's afternoon, Birmingham Live reporter Alex Dicken wrote that Birmingham's players "aren't quite on the same wavelength as Kyogo just yet." He added: "The question is are they just not finding him, or is he not making the right runs. That is an issue [Chris] Davies will hope to iron out over the next two weeks." Meanwhile Nicolas Kuhn lifted his first piece of silverware in Italy as his new side were crowned Como Cup winners. The £17m attacker made a second-half cameo as Como 1907 secured the first-ever Como Cup title with a 3–0 victory over Ajax.
