James Gunn offers clarity on Robert Pattinson's future in DCU and delays to the Batman Part II

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has addressed speculation surrounding Robert Pattinson's potential inclusion in the main DC Universe and provided an update on the status of The Batman Part II. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Gunn clarified ongoing rumours but left the door slightly ajar, stating, 'I would never say zero, because you just never know. But it's not likely. It's not likely at all.' This suggests that there are no current plans for Pattinson's Batman to join the mainline DCU alongside David Corenswet's Superman, who will debut in Superman this July. Fan hopes for a unified DCU Trinity featuring Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman remain in flux, especially with the DCU's Batman-centric film, The Brave and the Bold, still without a lead actor. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II, a standalone sequel in a separate continuity, continues to face development delays. Originally expected to deliver a script in early 2024, Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin have yet to finalise the screenplay. This has pushed the film's release to October 1, 2027. Amid online speculation that the sequel might be cancelled, Gunn addressed the concerns directly. 'Batman Part II is not canceled. We don't have a script. Matt's slow. Let him take his time,' Gunn stated, dismissing cancellation rumours and encouraging patience from fans. Gunn also disputed recent reports claiming the script was expected by Memorial Day, noting on Threads that such expectations were unfounded. As development continues, it now appears unlikely that production will begin in 2025. Despite growing frustrations over the delay, DC Studios appears committed to allowing Reeves the time he needs to develop the sequel. For now, The Batman Part II remains on track for a 2027 release, albeit with an uncertain production timeline.

James Gunn: ‘I Don't Think Superman Is All Good'

James Gunn says that isn't all good and Lex Luthor isn't all bad in the new DCU movie. Superman arrives in theaters in just one month from Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios. Written and directed by Gunn, the blockbuster movie stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said, 'There are some characters that are really almost saintly, like Superman. There are some characters who are almost pretty terrible, like Lex Luthor. But I don't think Lex is all bad, and I don't think Superman is all good. All those people in between, the Guy Gardners and the Jimmy Olsens of the world, are even more complex in their moralities and what they think is okay.' Green Lantern Guy Gardner is being played by Nathan Fillion in the film, while Skyler Gisondo portrays Jimmy Olsen. The cast further includes Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer, and Alan Tudyk as the voice of Superman Robot #4. 'Superman, DC Studios' first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures,' the official synopsis for the movie reads. 'In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor, and heart, delivering a Superman who's driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.' Superman hits United States theaters and IMAX on July 11, 2025. Originally reported by Brandon Schreur at SuperHeroHype. James Gunn responds to Snyder fan urging spoilers and review bombing of Superman

Since the announcement of James Gunn's DC Universe (DCU) replacing Zack Snyder's DC Extended Universe (DCEU), a segment of devoted Snyder fans has launched a negative campaign against the new direction, including upcoming DCU projects. James Gunn responds to a Snyder fan urging people to spoil and review bomb #Superman "I think we will survive. I'm not sure the eight people that listen to that guy are going to impact the course of events" — Culture Crave 🍿 (@CultureCrave) June 16, 2025 The latest backlash targeted Superman, the first film in Gunn's DCU, set for release on July 11, 2025. A Snyder supporter took to Reddit to encourage users to spoil and review bomb the film. A screenshot of the post caught the attention of James Gunn, who responded directly, writing, 'Lol I think we will survive. I'm not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it's a guy) are going to impact the course of events.' Let's be honest. James and Zack are friends. I loved Zack's movies and I will probably love James Gunn movies! I love both James and Zack. — Alaska (@Alaska0420) June 16, 2025 The comment quickly drew attention online, sparking a variety of fan reactions. Many supported Gunn's stance and condemned the negativity. One user noted, 'Let's be honest. James and Zack are friends. I loved Zack's movies and I will probably love James Gunn's movies too.' Another added, 'As a Snyder fan, that's trash. Let people enjoy the movie… we had a good run with the DCEU.' A third pointed out, 'Funny thing is the majority of Snyder fanboys aren't even CBM fans. They just get annoyed when others like a movie.' James Gunn responds to a Snyder fan urging people to spoil and review bomb #Superman "I think we will survive. I'm not sure the eight people that listen to that guy are going to impact the course of events" — Culture Crave 🍿 (@CultureCrave) June 16, 2025 Despite isolated online campaigns, Superman — starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and others — is tracking to open strongly at the box office. It follows the DCU's animated debut Creature Commandos and precedes titles like Peacemaker season 2, Lanterns, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Clayface. As a Snyder fan, that's trash. Let people enjoy the movie. Absolutely wishing no malice, we had a good run with DCEU — Maxon Unlimited (@MaxonUnlimited) June 16, 2025 Gunn's confident response, paired with the supportive fan reaction, suggests that online trolling may not derail anticipation for the upcoming DCU reboot.

A New Wonder Woman is in Development and Andor's Adria Arjona is at the Top of the Fancasts

Gal Gadot may have appeared in The Flash , but just like with Superman, it does look like DC is ready to reboot Wonder Woman as well. In a recent talk with Entertainment Weekly, DCU co-head James Gunn has confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie 'is being written right now'. We don't have much details, but fans are already calling for a new WW to take Gadot's place. Interestingly enough, one top choice that seems to be championed online is that of Adria Arjona — (@BespinBulletin) June 10, 2025 My choice would be Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman — ໊ (@te_Neil_et) June 10, 2025 Even before the reboot announcement, Arjona has been a fancast that's been going around online. She was particularly popular thanks to the success of Disney+'s Andor where she plays the part of Bix. Of course, there are still other actresses that have been getting fancast online besides Arjona. One other star who may have a good chance is Ana de Armas who recently showed off her action chops in Ballerina . Some have also been pitching May Calamawy from the Moon Knight series. Personally, I was a fan of the Gadot casting for BvS , and Gadot really did bring a unique flavor to her Wonder Woman which really shone in the solo movie. It's just a shame that the sequel wasn't able to capture audiences like expected. I would personally love it if Gadot was able to make a third film, but seeing as how there's a dedicated bash network for her online, maybe DC may want to cast someone else. No release date has been set for the Wonder Woman reboot.

James Gunn says he's working on something that's "in some way" a Superman follow-up, but it's not "a straight-up Superman sequel"

James Gunn says he's working on a follow-up to his upcoming Superman movie – but it's not necessarily a straightforward sequel. "What I'm working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes," Gunn said in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly when asked if a sequel was in the works. "But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily." Intriguing. A follow-up movie that's not a cut and dry sequel could imply a crossover with other characters – maybe one (or more) of the Man of Steel's Justice League counterparts? Gunn dismissed that theory pretty swiftly, telling EW, "There is no Justice League in this world… not yet." But back to Superman. David Corenswet is taking on the titular role in Gunn's new take on Clark Kent, alongside a cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. As for what else is next in the DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock, is currently in the works and set to hit the big screen next June, and Clayface is heading to the big screen next year, too. Gunn also recently revealed that he's working on a new Wonder Woman movie, but that doesn't have a release date yet. Superman flies into theaters on July 11. In the meantime, get up to speed with the rest of this year's biggest movie release dates.
