Google Search announces Gemini 2.5 Pro integration, agentic calling feature
Google is expanding the capabilities of its AI-powered Search with the rollout of Gemini 2.5 Pro and a new agentic feature that can place calls to local businesses on your behalf. The update is rolling out now in the US for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. At the moment, it is unclear whether the same will be rolled out to India any time soon. Gemini 2.5 Pro and Deep Search come to AI Mode in Google Search Google, in a blog post while announcing this, said that the most powerful version of Gemini is now available directly within Search's AI Mode. Designed to handle complex queries involving math, reasoning, and code, Gemini 2.5 Pro can be selected from a dropdown menu for more advanced assistance. It includes link references for deeper exploration and is available to Pro and Ultra tier users who've opted into the Labs experiment. Another addition is Deep Search — a research-focused feature that issues hundreds of searches in the background and compiles fully-cited summaries across scattered sources. Google says it's useful for deep dives on topics like academic work, financial planning, or big life decisions like home buying. Deep Search is powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro and is also rolling out to Labs users on the Pro and Ultra plans. AI-powered calls to check prices and appointments Search is also getting a practical upgrade with AI-powered calling. When looking up services like 'pet groomers near me,' users will see a new 'Have AI check pricing' option. Google will then automatically contact businesses, gather pricing and availability details, and present results — saving users from having to call around. This feature is rolling out to all users in the US, with higher usage limits for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google says more advanced features will continue to arrive first for paying subscribers as part of its broader push to make Search more intelligent and proactive. In related news, Google has confirmed that the Made by Google 2025 event will be held on August 20. The US technology company is going to expand its Pixel product portfolio at this event. As per the annual tradition, the next generation of Pixel smartphones, alongside Pixel Watch, and more, is expected to be unveiled at the event.

Google expands AI Mode with extra features for search
Google is continuing to double down on its AI Mode, bringing more features to its dedicated Search chatbot. Today, the company is adding the Gemini 2.5 Pro model and the Deep Search capability to AI Mode. These features will be available to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers. Although both of these tools can still be accessed through other means, Google's move to incorporate them into the chatbot points to an end goal of AI Mode being the primary form of engagement with the company's signature search service. These developments are follow-ups to announcements made during Google's I/O conference this spring. AI Mode began rolling out to all Google users in May, and Deep Think was also announced as an option for the Gemini 2.5 Pro model at that time. Another AI tool teased at I/O was the ability for Gemini to place phone calls with Project Astra. This agentic option is also coming in a limited form to AI Mode. For starters, it will only be able to contact local businesses and its topics will be limited to inquiring about availability and pricing. When a person searches for companies or services, they may see an option such as "Have AI check prices" that will initiate a call to that business. These AI phone calls are rolling out today to all Search users, but Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will have higher limits.

Google's new AI tools in Search can now call businesses and do deep research for you
Google is rolling out new AI-powered features to make Search more helpful, especially for users subscribed to its premium tiers. These include Gemini 2.5 Pro support in AI Mode, access to Deep Search, and a new tool that lets Search call local businesses on your behalf. The biggest update is the arrival of the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in AI Mode. While the regular AI Mode already provides useful responses for most everyday queries, the Pro option adds support for more complex tasks like reasoning, math problems, and coding help. Users can now choose between the default assistant and Gemini 2.5 Pro using a new drop-down menu in Search. When enabled, Deep Search works in the background to issue hundreds of related searches, scan across the web, and produce a detailed, well-sourced summary based on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model. This tool is meant for deeper research on topics like job planning, financial analysis, or big life decisions. It's currently available for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers who have joined the AI Mode Labs experiment in the U.S. Video credit — Google Another new capability now rolling out is AI-powered business calling. If you search for something like 'dry cleaners near me' or 'pet groomers in my area,' Google may offer a 'Have AI check pricing' option in the search results. When selected, Search will contact businesses on your behalf to collect pricing and availability info, then summarize the results for you. Video credit — Google This feature aims to save time by removing the need to make calls yourself, and could help businesses get more bookings through Google. It's available to all users in the U.S., but higher usage limits apply for Pro and Ultra subscribers. Businesses still control how they are contacted through their Business Profile updates are part of Google's broader push to bring more advanced AI tools directly into Search. While many of the newest features are launching first for paid subscribers, the company says it plans to expand access over time. For now, AI Mode continues to evolve as a testing ground for Google's latest capabilities, powered by its Gemini models. As AI continues to reshape how we use search engines, tools like Deep Search and AI-powered calls hint at a future where Search can act more like a personal assistant than just a web index. Elon Musk Unveils Custom AI Companions for Grok, Featuring Goth Anime Girl ‘Ani' and Red Panda ‘Rudy'
Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok is stepping into the world of digital companionship. In a fresh move to expand user interaction, Grok has introduced customisable AI companions — the first of which are a goth-themed anime character named Ani and a red panda named Rudy. These AI avatars are currently being rolled out as part of a soft launch available to subscribers of Super Grok, a $30/month tier under the broader X Premium+ offering. This premium subscription gives users access to advanced AI features including DeepSearch, image generation, real-time data capabilities, and a complex reasoning mode. Musk shared the update through a post on X, saying, 'This is pretty cool,' along with an image of Ani — a character designed with a distinct goth anime aesthetic. Ani is shown as a blonde girl with pigtails, dressed in a black corset, short skirt, and thigh-high fishnet stockings. The avatar can be activated by adjusting settings within the Grok app, according to early user reports. Rudy, on the other hand, is a red panda-inspired companion, bringing a more playful and whimsical design to the mix. Both Ani and Rudy are designed to engage users through interactive conversations typical of the Grok experience. While xAI has not officially published comprehensive documentation about these AI avatars, testers confirm that the companions are interactive and have a human-like conversational style. The move seems to signal a larger strategy by xAI to create more engaging and persona-driven experiences for its user base. Interestingly, a third character named Chad has also been spotted in the app interface, hinting that more AI companions may soon join the lineup. Grok's existing voice chat functionality may also get integrated with these avatars, enabling even more immersive, spoken interactions. However, the launch hasn't been without controversy. Reports suggest that Ani includes an optional not-safe-for-work (NSFW) mode, altering her appearance to include more suggestive visuals. The Verge has noted that NSFW content associated with Ani has already appeared on X, sparking debate over content moderation. xAI has yet to release an official statement on the matter. This development also adds to the ongoing conversation about the psychological effects of emotionally engaging AI avatars. While these companions are not being officially marketed as romantic or emotional partners, their design and the ability to personalise them suggest a deliberate lean into emotionally resonant interactions. Experts warn that this could blur the lines between utility and intimacy in AI relationships. Grok's AI companions are designed to enhance personalisation and boost user engagement within the paid tiers of Musk's X ecosystem. As xAI continues to refine and expand these features, it's clear the future of AI chat is becoming more character-driven and emotionally interactive.
