Indian medical team departs after completing its mission in Bangladesh
Dhaka: The Indian Medical Team, consisting of specialists from two top hospitals of India, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, returned to India on Monday evening after completing its mission in Bangladesh, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said in a statement. The four-member team came to Bangladesh on 23 July 2025, in pursuance of the assurance of support and assistance extended by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, in the wake of the devastating air crash at the Milestone School and College in Dhaka on 21 July 2025. During its stay in Dhaka, the Indian Medical Team worked alongside their Bangladeshi counterparts at the National Institute of Burn & Plastic Surgery (NIBPS), offering specialised medical advice to support the treatment and recovery of the victims of the Milestone tragedy. "The Indian team expressed satisfaction with the treatment protocol being followed at NIBPS and exchanged expert opinions in dealing with the most critical cases," the statement said. "India remains ready to promptly extend any further support required by Bangladesh with regard to critical medical care and rehabilitation of those injured in the tragic incident, including any need for further advanced treatment in India," it added. "The visit of the Indian medical team in the wake of this national tragedy in Bangladesh is a reflection of the deep-rooted nature of people-to-people relations and the enduring bonds of empathy that connect our two countries," the statement said. Reflecting this commitment, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka noted on July 25 that the visiting Indian medical team had provided critical inputs for the treatment methodology of patients injured in the fighter jet crash in Bangladesh. "The Indian Medical Team currently visiting Bangladesh continued their mission to provide medical support to Bangladesh authorities for treatment of critically injured patients in the aftermath of the plane crash of July 21 at Milestone School and College in Dhaka", said the statement posted on the Facebook page of the Indian High Commission, Dhaka. "Today, the team held the second round of consultations with doctors at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, visited some of the patients and observed their prognosis," it added.

Bangladesh proposes hosting Saudi production hub to expand partnership
DHAKA: Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus has proposed establishing Saudi Arabia's production sector in Bangladesh, his office said, following a meeting with the Kingdom's newly appointed envoy to Dhaka. Dr. Abdullah bin Abiyah presented his credentials as Saudi ambassador to Bangladesh earlier this month. He paid a visit to Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Sunday. Yunus, the Nobel Prize-winning economist who heads Bangladesh's interim government, 'proposed that Saudi Arabia could consider establishing its production sector in Bangladesh by utilizing Bangladesh's geostrategic location, cheap labor, and the country's resources,' the Chief Adviser's Press Wing said in a statement. Azad Majumder, Yunus' deputy press secretary who was present during the meeting, told Arab News that the move would be beneficial for both countries as it would 'create employment opportunities for the Bangladeshi youth and offer Saudi Arabia an opportunity to obtain essential goods at a better price.' The Saudi market is already familiar with Bangladeshi workers as some 3 million of them live in the Kingdom. They are the largest expat group in the Kingdom and the biggest Bangladeshi community outside Bangladesh. Many have been employed in the construction sector but increasingly also in professions requiring high skills. In 2023, Saudi Arabia launched the Workers' Recruitment and Skill Verification Program in Bangladesh, aiming to advance the professional competence of employees in the Kingdom's labor market. Yunus discussed with the Saudi envoy the prospect of increased investment in health education to support skills development in Bangladesh's healthcare sector. 'It would also benefit the Kingdom, given the growing demand for medical professionals in Saudi Arabia. In recent years, Bangladesh has sent a number of healthcare workers there,' Majumder said. 'A number of issues concerning the bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia were discussed during the meeting. Prof. Yunus expressed his hope that the Saudi-Bangladesh relationship will reach new heights during Ambassador Abiyah's tenure and pledged full support from his government to achieve this goal.' The ambassador delivered an invitation letter from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for Yunus to attend the Future Investment Initiative Forum in Riyadh in October. Often dubbed 'Davos in the Desert,' the forum is an annual international investment and innovation conference that gathers global leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, and innovators.

Unknown group tries to seize Bangladesh Awami League headquarters ahead of uprising anniversary
Dhaka: An unidentified group under the banner of the "International Institute on Fascism and Genocide" is trying to seize the headquarters of the Bangladesh Awami League located in the heart of the capital, Dhaka. Every room in the building is being cleaned, but no one can say whose orders it is being done under. Those responsible for supervising the work say the cleanup work will be completed before the anniversary of the fall of Sheikh Hasina in the student-led uprising on August 5. Shkhawat Hossain, who is in charge of supervising the cleaning work, told reporters, "This is an establishment from the era of the fascist Sheikh Hasina. We don't want more fascists to be born here. That's why we are taking it under control. No one's permission is needed for this work". A banner reading "International Institute on Fascism and Genocide" hangs at the Awami League headquarters located at 23, Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka. 10-12 workers clean the building every day. Some say the 10-story building will be used as a rest house for those leading the movement against Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League is a major political party in Bangladesh. Founded in 1949, it is the oldest existing party in the country. It played a vital role in the country's struggle for independence. The interim government has banned the activities of the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina, protesters burned down many of the party's offices, including the Awami League headquarters. Protesters are removing monuments of Sheikh Hasina and her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, one by one. Earlier, Protesters also demolished Sheikh Mujib's 32, Dhanmondi house, which is being used as a Bangabandhu museum. Sheikh Hasina was ousted in a Student-led uprising in August last year. After her fall, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Laureate.

Bangladesh Chief Adviser thanks foreign medical teams, including India for treating plane crash victims
Dhaka: A delegation of 21 physicians and nurses from Singapore, China, and India met with Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Sunday at the State Guest House Jamuna. The international medical teams are currently in Dhaka to provide specialised healthcare services to victims of the recent plane crash at Milestone School and College. During the meeting, Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the rapid response and medical support extended by the healthcare professionals. He commended their dedication and solidarity at a time of national crisis and emphasised the importance of international cooperation in emergency healthcare. "These teams have come not just with their skills, but with their hearts," said Professor Yunus. "Their presence reaffirms our shared humanity and the value of global partnerships in times of tragedy," he added. The medical teams have been working tirelessly alongside local healthcare professionals to ensure critical treatment and trauma care for the injured, many of whom are young children. The Chief Adviser also acknowledged the swift diplomatic coordination that enabled the teams to arrive and begin their work without delay. He assured the visiting professionals of the government's full support in facilitating their mission. The Chief Adviser also urged the physicians to maintain long-term connections with Bangladesh, even virtually, for institutional collaboration, medical education exchange, and sustained engagement in capacity building and innovation in the healthcare sector. He emphasised that such partnerships could lay the foundation for lasting cooperation in public health and emergency preparedness. Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum thanked the physicians and nurses for extending their hand during this difficult time. Professor Sayedur Rahman, special assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Health, said that many lives were saved as the foreign physicians rushed immediately. At the meeting, Prof Dr Md. Nasir Uddin, Director, National Institute of Burn & Plastic Surgery (NIBPS), said that it was proven again that doctors are without borders. Ten members from Singapore, eight from China, and four from India attended the meeting. Among others, the Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka, Yao Wen, and the Singapore Head of Mission in Dhaka were also present at the meeting. On July 21, 2025, a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft, specifically a Chinese-origin F-7 BGI fighter jet, crashed into the Milestone School and College campus in Dhaka's Uttara neighbourhood. The crash resulted in the deaths of at least 27 people and injured over 170 others, mostly students. Bangladesh's interim government declared a national day of mourning on July 22, with flags flown at half-mast in all government offices and educational institutions.

Bangladesh seeks Malaysia's backing for Asean membership during meeting with Nurul Izzah
NEW DELHI, July 28 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar called on Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Sunday. Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean). 'We want to become a part of Asean, and we will need your support,' he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an Asean sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. 'Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies,' he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule. Nurul Izzah spoke at Dhaka University on Sunday at a conference marking the first anniversary of the July Revolution. She also offered her condolences during the meeting with Yunus and at the conference over the loss of lives in the recent fighter jet crash at Milestone School in Dhaka. — Bernama
