Tirupati EMC to host Rs. 468-crore chip unit

TIRUPATI: The Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) shaping up near the Tirupati Airport has got a major boost with the Union Cabinet approving the establishment of a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh. The state government has proposed to set up the project at the Tirupati EMC, cementing the region's status as a hub for high-value electronics manufacturing. The semiconductor unit will be established by Advanced System in Package Technologies (ASIP) with an initial investment of Rs 468 crore. ASIP's facility will have initial capacity to produce 9.6 crore chips annually, catering to applications in mobile devices, set-top boxes, automotive electronic control units, and household electronics items. The Andhra Pradesh government, in a letter sent to ASIP on Monday, formally invited the company to set up its operations in the state and outlined a package of incentives for the firm. According to official sources, ASIP has given its consent and has plans to scale its investment over time to Rs 1,500 crore. To attract the project, the state government has offered a 25 per cent capital subsidy, land at nominal cost, a Rs 1.50 per unit electricity subsidy for five years, electricity duty exemption for the same period, a five-year interest subsidy on term loans, and full State GST reimbursement for five years. ASIP's consent was subsequently communicated to the Centre, which granted its approval, clearing the way for the unit's establishment at the Tirupati EMC. The venture marks a significant push in the state's strategy to balance its tech footprint—focusing on software investments in Visakhapatnam as well as Amaravati and positioning Rayalaseema as an electronics manufacturing hub. Tirupati was declared an electronics cluster between 2014 and 2019, and the new semiconductor unit is expected to accelerate investments in this sector. ASIP Technologies, partnered with South Korea's Apact Company Limited, will be the latest high-profile occupant of the EMC. The cluster, developed under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's (MeitY) EMC scheme, already hosts major players like Dixon Technologies and Celkon in EMC-1, while EMC-2 has attracted investments from companies such as TCL and Sunny Opotech. The arrival of the semiconductor unit is expected to strengthen the electronics ecosystem in Tirupati, drawing in both domestic and foreign investors and leveling up India's position in the global semiconductor supply chain.

Common pill taken by millions already ‘slashes risk of killer cancer by 69%'

While the new finding is an important consideration for patients and doctors, researchers also warn of the side effects PILL POPPER Common pill taken by millions already 'slashes risk of killer cancer by 69%' WOMEN who use oral contraceptives for a decade or more can reduce their risk of developing womb cancer by as much as 69 per cent, say scientists. Shorter use is still linked to a significant reduction in the likelihood of developing the disease, new research found. 1 Researchers found oral contraceptives can reduce the risk of womb cancer up to 69 per cent Credit: Getty Oral contraceptives (OC) offer several benefits beyond preventing pregnancy. They're known to regulate menstrual cycles, reduce menstrual pain and bleeding, and improve acne. Previous studies have linked OC with reduced risk of ovarian cancer. Now, new research published in Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, confirms a clear association between OC use and the risk of womb cancer. Researchers found the protective association between the use of OCs and the risk of womb cancer, also known as endometrial cancer, is stronger with duration of use. Women using OCs for less than five years had a 34 per cent lower risk, those using them for five or more years had a 61 per cent lower risk, and the strongest benefit – a 69 per cent reduction – was observed in women who used OCs for at least 10 years. When the analysis was restricted to users of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) - hormonal birth control that contains both estrogen and progestogen - the protective association was even more pronounced, with a 54 per cent reduction in the odds of womb cancer compared to non-users. 'The use of oral contraceptives, which regulate hormone levels, appears to reduce the proliferation of endometrial cells, potentially lowering mutation rates and long-term cancer risk,' said Dr András Harajka, a PhD student at Semmelweis University's Centre for Translational Medicine, and the first author of the study. Womb cancer is now the most common gynaecological malignancy in high-income countries, with more than 417,000 new cases reported globally in 2020 alone, the research warns. The World Health Organisation (WHO) projects a 49 per cent increase in EMC cases by 2050. What is womb cancer and what are the symptoms? These rising trends have been linked to factors such as ageing, obesity, and hormonal influences. Earlier studies have shown hormonal factors – particularly the roles of oestrogen and progesterone – play a central role in womb cancer risk. Co-author Dr Nándor Ács, also head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Semmelweis University, added: 'Our findings provide robust and up-to-date evidence that oral contraceptive use is significantly associated with lower risk of endometrial cancer, particularly with longer use. "This is an important consideration for patients and clinicians when discussing contraceptive options.' But the researchers caution while OCs used by more than 150 million worldwide offer significant protective benefits, they can also carry side effects including mood changes, nausea, and, in rare cases, an increased risk of blood clots or stroke. The NHS says you may have some side effects when you first start taking the combined contraceptive pill, including bleeding between periods (breakthrough bleeding) or changes to your periods. Taking the pill can also cause high blood pressure in a small number of people. The NHS advises: "If you still have side effects after three months and they're a problem for you, speak to a pharmacist or doctor. "It may help to change to a different pill, or to have a shorter pill-free break or no break between pills (a tailored regime)." It adds the risk of getting a blood clot is very small and affects up to one in 1,000 people.

Yeida begins development of Electronics Manufacturing Cluster

The Yamuna Expressway industrial development authority on Friday said that it has finalised Design Associates Incorporation as the contractor responsible for all internal development work within the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster. Yeida begins development of Electronics Manufacturing Cluster The project under the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) 2.0 project in Sector 10 spread on 206 acres aims to lure investments from domestic and global electronics and allied companies, trying to develop the area as a national hub for high-tech manufacturing. The internal infrastructure is expected to be completed by January 31, 2028. 'The EMC project is strategically planned to cater to a wide range of sectors, including automotive electronics, industrial and consumer electronics, computer hardware, communication systems, and components for e-mobility,' said Shailendra Bhati, officer on special duty of the Yeida. The estimated cost of the project is ₹ 485 crore, of which ₹144 crore will be provided as central financial assistance by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The remaining amount will be borne by YEIDA, said officials. Of the total area, 122 acres have been marked as saleable area, including those for industries, ready-built factory (RBF) sheds, and a flatted factory complex. The complex will feature two multi-storey RCC buildings, offering 176 factory units of varying sizes—34 units of 120 square metres, 48 units of 90 square metres, and 94 units of 60 square metres. Yeida said the infrastructure development and construction by various industries will go hand in hand, enabling a comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem. 'Havells India Ltd has been selected as the anchor unit and will develop its facility over 50 acres. The company will produce fans, air coolers, lights, cables, switchgear, and other appliances. It has committed to invest ₹800 crore and generate employment for 1,000 people. Commercial production is expected to begin in 2026,' said Bhatia. Four other companies have also received Letters of Intent. Dixon Technologies will take up 22.5 acres, while Ascent-K Circuit will get 16 acres to manufacture high-end PCBs. Aurionpro ToshiAutomatic Systems has been allotted 5 acres, and Neenjas Electric has been issued an LOI for a 10,000-square-metre plot. Approval for these proposals is currently pending with the state government.
