27-year-old U.S. hiker found dead in Spain nearly month after going missing: Authorities

Authorities have reportedly found the body of an American hiker who'd been missing in the mountains along the Spain-France border since July 14. Guilford Cole Henderson, 27, appeared to have fallen about 650 feet down a mountain in Spain's remote Ordesa y Monte Pardido National Park in the Pyrenees mountains, according to both digital newspaper El Español and the newspaper El Diario De Huesca. Authorities are transporting the recovered body to a forensic medicine institute to "confirm his identity," El Español reported. The search for the Rhodes College alumnus has drawn international media attention since his friends posted pleas for help on social media in finding him. Several of his friends had hiked with him in Spain's remote Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. According to friends on Facebook, Henderson decided to hike alone after putting his cell phone on airplane mode to save battery power. The friends said they became concerned when Henderson didn't show for a June 14 flight from Spain to Amsterdam, where Henderson was living. Parents informed about body discovery Spanish authorities have told Henderson's parents, Trevania and John Henderson, that they believe they've recovered their son's body, according to loved ones in Nashville who spoke to The Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network. Henderson's parents, who now live in New England, traveled to Spain for at least a week to help with daily search efforts. His mother, who grew up in Nashville, still has connections to the area and visits Tennessee often, loved ones said. The US Embassy in Spain and the Spanish Civil Guard both declined to comment in an email to The Tennessean, requesting further information. Who was Cole Henderson? Henderson was a 27-year-old who attended high school in Delaware and graduated from Rhodes College in Memphis in 2020 with honors with a degree in computer science. He is the grandson of the late Guilford Dudley Jr., who founded Nashville's annual white-tie gala, known as the Swan Ball, and the former US Ambassador to Denmark under the Nixon administration, according to The Tennessean. His former employers include software companies in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and San Francisco, as shown on his social media profiles. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was living in Amsterdam while working as an engineer for the software company Dexter Energy. A self-described avid packer, social media posts show that he has traveled across the world, from skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado, to hiking in South Dakota's Badlands National Park, and from volunteering in Costa Rica to trekking along the famed Tour du Mont Blanc through Switzerland, Italy and France. "Cole is an experienced traveler, a kind and curious soul, and someone who means the world to me," friend Eric Simon said in a July 15 Facebook post asking for help finding Henderson. Where was Cole Henderson hiking? Henderson was set to hike through the Ordesa Valley in the Pyrenees Mountains to a mountain hut known as Refugio de Pineta. He parked his car in the Spanish village of Torla and his friends believed he was going to catch a ride back to his vehicle. Friends also said he planned on camping while in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, located in the mountains on the border between northern Spain and France. Officials do not know how long Henderson planned on hiking or whether he would attempt any of the peaks along the way. On July 10, hikers reported rain and severe thunder, the day after Henderson began his hike. They also mentioned that there was limited to no cell service on the route Henderson was possibly using. Mystery over death of Ukrainian anti-organised crime chief in Benidorm pool

A former official at Ukraine's Interior Ministry has been found dead at the very same Spanish resort where a Russian military defector was murdered. Ihor Hrushevskyi, the ex-head of the anti-crime police unit, was discovered in the town of Villajoyosa, a few miles from the resort popular with British tourists for its packaged holidays. The 61-year-old was floating face-down in the communal pool – no deeper than 1.5 metres – of the Cala Alta house complex, El Español reported. Neighbours pulled him out, performing CPR, but they were unable to save him and when paramedics arrived at the scene, he was pronounced dead. While there were no obvious signs of violence, blood was coming from one ear, so foul play has not been ruled out. The incident happened in the morning of June 29, but the identity of the man was only revealed this week. It was just a few months ago that Hrushevskyi had purchased a flat in one of the blocks and he was still renovating. His death comes a little more than a year after Maksim Kuzinovm – an ex-Russian helicopter pilot, who had deserted to Ukraine – was killed there. Police found his bullet-riddled body in the underground parking garage of that same resort. A burnt-out car apparently used by his attackers was found near the scene of the crime. The 28-year-old fled Russian and landed a Mi-8 helicopter in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv in August, 2023, while flying between two Russian bases. He had reportedly contacted the Ukrainian secret service to inform them of his decision to defect and they had promised him £397,000, protection for his family and new documents. More Trending A state TV report from October, in which Russian propagandists branded Kuzminov 'a traitor to the motherland', claimed that Russian intelligence operatives had received orders to assassinate him. Sergei Naryshkin, Russia's foreign intelligence chief, said at the time: 'In Russia it is customary to speak either good of the dead or nothing at all. 'This traitor and criminal became a moral corpse at the very moment when he planned his dirty and terrible crime.' Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on Hrushevskyi's death. 55% of Survey Respondents View Morocco as External Threat to Spain

Rabat – A new survey by Spain's Elcano Royal Institute shows that 55% of Spanish people view Morocco as a main external threat to their country. The number marks a six-point increase from a similar survey that the institute carried out last year. Conducted between May 19-29 this year, the survey featured responses from 1,000 participants. The findings ranked Morocco higher than Russia in terms of how much the North African country is perceived as a threat among Spaniards. Russia comes next with 33% of votes and the US with 19% – the latter marking a surge from 5% in 2024. According to the survey, the perception of Morocco as an external threat is stronger among right-wing respondents. Over 60% of the respondents, meanwhile, see Spain as safe from immediate threat from other countries, while 40% of others disagree. The perception of Morocco as a threat is fueled by different factors, including narratives in the Spanish media, which closely monitor the country's development across multiple sectors, particularly the military. In November, Spanish media were concerned about US President Donald Trump's re-election as well as the strengthened ties between Rabat and Washington, with local analysts warning of the potential implications for Spain's interests and influence in the Mediterranean. Spanish newspaper El Confidencial quoted Jose Antonio Gurpegui claiming that the strong ties between Morocco and the US will influence any future disputes between Rabat and Madrid. A few months ago, Spanish media also warned of growing threats to the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Several publications expressed alarm over potential shifts in the enclaves' status under Donald Trump's second US presidency. 'In the realm of security, there is concern that Trump could make an announcement about Ceuta and Melilla similar to what he did about Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara,' El Español reported in an analysis published in February. Spanish media outlets are also concerned about Morocco's robust and growing military, viewing it as a threat rather than a sovereign strategic choice. El Independiente claimed in March that Morocco's advancement in aviation 'poses a challenge to neighboring armies, including Spain,' adding that 'the Spanish case is particularly striking,' Spanish media are also alarmed by Morocco's infrastructure and economic development, with many reports highlighting the country's performance in terms of port activities, among others. Notably, Spanish media are concerned about the good performance that Morocco's Tangier Med Port has been achieving in the past years, drawing comparisons between the Moroccan hub and Algeciras and other central Spanish ports. British woman killed in gas explosion at bar in Spanish holiday hotspot

A British woman has died in a gas explosion at a bar in southern Spain. The 56-year-old was one of two women killed when a butane canister ignited at the Casa Javi bar in San Pedro del Pinatar in Murcia last Thursday. She is believed to have been heading to the weekly market when she was caught in the blast. Another 17 people were injured. Her death was confirmed today in a social media post from the local council. The other victim was the bar owner, a Moroccan woman so far only named as Hind, who was said to have suffered severe burns, El Español reported. Police, ambulances and fire engines rushed to the bar shortly after midday on June 19 following the powerful explosion. Photos taken at the scene show what appears to have been a window which is blown out and debris strewn across the pavement outside. The owner of a shop nearby said: 'My entire business shook, the windows and everything.' No cause has yet been officially determined, but a Judicial Police inspection ruled the gas cylinder's seal had been 'sabotaged', according to reports. More Trending The local council wrote on X: 'From the San Pedro del Pinatar local council we want to express our most sincere condolences over the deaths of two people who were seriously injured in an explosion in Lo Pagan on June 19.' She was reportedly visiting the weekly market when she was caught in the horror explosion. Her death was confirmed today by the local town hall in a post on X. The second victim, named Hind, was a 38-year-old Moroccan woman and the bar's owner, El Español reported. She suffered severe burns and died after being hospitalised for a week. Both women had been battling for their lives in hospital alongside others injured in the explosion, which went off around 12.15pm, sending the area into chaos. Shocking new details have emerged suggesting the blast may not have been an accident. A Judicial Police inspection concluded the gas cylinder's seal had been 'sabotaged', according to reports. Locals have claimed the bar had long been a source of trouble in the neighbourhood. 'There were a lot of fights outside,' one resident told 20Minutos, adding: 'Girls were often seen in the area,' sparking speculation it may have been run as a brothel. The cause of the deadly blast is still officially unknown. Police investigations are ongoing. More to follow...
