In a retro reimagining, ‘Fantastic 4: First Steps' finds new life in the multiverse

Set against the backdrop of a 1950s-inspired Earth, the latest Fantastic Four film delivers emotional depth, visual flair, and a surprising narrative twist. By SHAH SHAMSHIRI 30 Jul 2025 05:46pm This Fantastic Four is also definitely better made compared to the most recent live-action version in 2015 that flopped despite having names like Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller. Photo: Marvel Studios Comic book characters have long reigned the silver screen ever since superheroes found their way into Hollywood. From fictional pages of children's comics, they have successfully broken into our television sets at homes and theatres worldwide, making us crave for more and more. What this writer finds strange, is the repetitive remakes of several comic book characters in movies. We have seen several versions of Spiderman, Batman, Superman and even the X-Men on screen. And now another famous super group from the Marvel universe, known as the Fantastic 4 is back with another movie from a totally different universe and timeline. However to my delight, the movie proved to be a winner. Judging from the set and props used in the film, Fantastic 4: First Steps is aptly named as it depicts the lives of these superheroes during the era of the 1950s or 1960s, making it relevant in portraying their first steps as the planet's protectors and saviours. Vanessa Kirby stars as Sue Storm. Photo: Marvel Studios For those who follow the Marvel universe, you will know that the there are several versions of planet Earth in different realms known as the multiverse and in this edition of Fantastic Four, they are on a different planet Earth but facing a very familiar problem found on the 'other Earths.' Like the second Fantastic Four movie which starred Jessica Alba and Chris Evans a few years ago, the four astronauts turned superheroes face the wrath of Galactus the planet eater and his herald, the Silver Surfer. Only in this universe, the Silver Surfer is a female and she has a liking for the Human Torch. This playbook change makes the movie more interesting as it gives this Human Torch (played by Joseph Quinn) a slightly different personality compared to the arrogant and vain Johnny Storm played by Chris Evans in the previous film franchise. As it is also not an introductory feature of how they received their superpowers, the film takes off from some new developments where the Fantastic Four have gained world recognition and are deemed as the planet's only hope when it comes to supervillains and threats. And this time, not only are Mr Fantastic and the Invisible Woman already married but they are expecting their first child, Franklin Richards! Franklin eventually sees the light of day in the movie, as he is delivered in a spaceship in outer space during mum and dad's mission trying to stop the evil Galactus from devouring planet Earth. Julia Garner plays Silver Surfer, the steely wanderer. Photo: Marvel Studios The plot thickens when Galactus offers to spare Earth if the Richards were to hand over their child (which Galactus believes has the power to take over his hunger for planets) in return for the planet's safety. Naturally refusing the sacrifice, the Fantastic Four then devise a plan to save the planet without having to forego the new superbaby. This interesting narrative gave the movie something extra to play with, making viewers constantly guessing the next moves of the team. It also gave a chance to introduce some other important side characters including Ben Grimm or The Thing's latest love interest, schoolteacher Rachel Rozman. This Fantastic Four is also definitely better made compared to the most recent live-action version in 2015 that flopped despite having names like Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller. Furthermore, the retro-setting in this one definitely gave the film an upper edge. Topped up with the ultra-modern special effects displayed during the movie's action scenes and a stellar cast led by Pedro Pascal as the team's leader, this Fantastic 4 movie is truly an audio-visual triumph. Not only did it deliver the elements of a 'good' superhero flick, it also emits the right amount of emotions and suspense, thanks to the brilliant screenplay and acting. Be sure to stay tuned for the hidden end-credits as they may explain what is coming after this. Fantastic 4: First Steps is currently showing in all cinemas nationwide. More Like This

The ‘Fantastic Four' Are Back—Here's How to Watch Their New Film

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. Marvel's iconic superhero team is getting a fresh start. Fantastic Four: First Steps, in theaters today, introduces a new version of the group: Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (a.k.a. Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (the Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (the Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (the Thing). The film is set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1960s rather than the present-day Marvel universe fans might be used to. It follows the group as they face off against the powerful cosmic villain Galactus and his mysterious messenger, the Silver Surfer (played by Julia Garner). This isn't just a superhero movie—it's also about family, as Reed and Sue are expecting their first child. As Director Matt Shakman (WandaVision) told Variety, 'They are parents first. They are scientists and explorers second. And they're superheroes only when they have to be. I come at this as a dad and as a husband. That's what makes it so special to me.' The cast helped shape their characters in new ways too. Quinn told Entertainment Weekly that his version of Johnny isn't just a cocky playboy. 'He's a man that leads with a lot of bravado, which can be an affront sometimes. But also he's funny,' he said. 'Myself and [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin [Feige] were speaking about previous iterations of him and where we are culturally. He was branded as this womanizing, devil-may-care guy, but is that sexy these days? I don't think so. This version of Johnny is less callous with other people's feelings, and hopefully there's a self-awareness about what's driving that attention-seeking behavior.' Garner described her Silver Surfer to Entertainment Weekly as 'so different than anyone I've ever played.' She added, 'She has this mysterious energy about her, and slowly that mystery will get solved with the audience throughout watching it.' And while this isn't Moss-Bachrach's first time playing a Marvel character (he was also in The Punisher), he told the outlet, 'In my brief two portrayals of Marvel characters, I've hit the two big guys. It's a deep honor that I take to heart.' Not just yet. The movie hits theaters today and is expected to arrive on Disney+, as most Marvel titles do. To refresh your memory before diving into Fantastic Four: First Steps, you can also watch past Fantastic Four movies, including Fantastic Four (1994), Fantastic 4 (2005), Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), and Fant4stic (2015) on Disney+. Fans Are Racing to Try Pepsi's 'Fun' and 'Creative' New Offerings—Here's Where to Find Them

Fans Are Racing to Try Pepsi's 'Fun' and 'Creative' New Offerings—Here's Where to Find Them originally appeared on Parade. The 2025 cinema run should go down in the history books as one of the greatest of all time. We've seen such standouts as Sinners and Tyler Perry's Straw, and even got another installment in the Jurassic Park universe. Superman has officially returned, and we can't wait to see Pedro Pascal star in the new Fantastic 4: First Steps film. While streaming is still most people's preferred method of viewing, the movie theaters are back in a big way, and legacy institutions are finding exciting new ways to reimagine the film-going experience. 😋😋🍳🍔 From buzzy (and slightly suggestive) popcorn buckets to movies shot in multiple formats at once, we're truly witnessing a golden age in motion picture history. Sure, not every movie is a hit, but it's the total experience that matters. You might not need a while you're watching Scarlett Johansson kill it on screen, but it doesn't hurt either. Besides, we're already sneaking full pizzas into the theater anyway, so why not indulge a bit on your in-movie meal?Even if you are the type to sneak in snacks in your boots or stash popcorn in your purse, it's hard to stop by the snack counter just to window shop. Of course, once you're there, you might as well go ahead and make it a large. As if we needed even more temptation, Regal and Pepsi just teamed up with a refreshing-looking drink menu that's got fans buying movie tickets in droves. According to @markie_devo, the iconic brands teamed up to launch new Pepsi Drips, a lineup of three new beverage concoctions exclusive to Regal Cinemas. You can choose between Tropicana Cotton Candy Lemonade, which features Tropicana Lemonade, candy boba, and floating cotton candy; Pepsi Cherry Boba burst, a blend of Pepsi Zero Sugar over cherry boba, finished with sweet cream cold foam and mini marshmallows; or the Starry Dragonfruit Blast, which mixes Starry and watermelon with a dragonfruit garnish. Just go ahead and take my money. As delicious as they sound, though, the only catch is you'll only find them at Regal Pinnacle and Regal Times Square for now. Unsurprisingly, movie fans took to the comments to express their excitement, with most saying, 'Ooo, these look fun.' We think so too! Here's hoping we get a wider rollout Are Racing to Try Pepsi's 'Fun' and 'Creative' New Offerings—Here's Where to Find Them first appeared on Parade on Jul 11, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

'Superman' director reveals reboot will tackle politics and kindness, tells 'jerks' to 'screw' off

Director James Gunn revealed that the upcoming "Superman" movie will be "about politics," saying that the iconic superhero is "an immigrant that came from other places." "Superman is the story of America," Gunn told The Sunday Times in a recent interview. "An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me, it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost." The character, first introduced in 1938, was born from the imagination of writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster in Cleveland, Ohio. In the comics, Superman is the sole survivor of the planet Krypton, sent to Earth by his parents as their world faced destruction. Five For Fighting Reimagines 'Superman' In Powerful Tribute To Israeli Hostages The film, set to hit theaters on July 11, will serve as a reboot of the 2013 film Man of Steel and is intended to launch a new cinematic universe for the DC franchise. Actor David Corenswet stars as the new Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane. When asked whether he considered how the movie's political themes might resonate differently across the country — from "blue state" New York, aka Metropolis, to Superman's rural roots in Kansas — Gunn acknowledged the contrast. Read On The Fox News App "Yes, it plays differently," he said. "It's about human kindness. And obviously, there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them." Actor Knocks 'Fantastic 4' Hero As 'Womanizing' Guy, Says His Portrayal In New Film Will Be Different While Gunn emphasized the film's political and moral undertones, he also noted its sense of fun and fantasy — mentioning a flying dog in a cape as part of the film's lighter elements. "Yes, it's about politics," he said. "But on another level, it's about morality. Do you never kill no matter what — which is what Superman believes — or do you have some balance, as Lois believes? It's really about their relationship and how differing moral perspectives can pull two people apart." Gunn did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for article source: 'Superman' director reveals reboot will tackle politics and kindness, tells 'jerks' to 'screw' off
