Deadly building collapse in Karachi kills 15, leaves nine injured

KARACHI — A residential building collapsed in the southeastern Pakistani city of Karachi, killing 15 people and injuring nine others, local media reported on Saturday. The five-story structure, located in Sindh province, came crashing down on Friday afternoon, according to Dawnnewspaper, which cited police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed. Rescue teams worked through the night to search for survivors and recover bodies from the debris. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza said the building had been previously declared uninhabitable by local authorities due to its deteriorating condition. He added that the structure was further weakened by recent heavy rains, ultimately leading to the collapse. Dr. Syed confirmed that no additional injuries were reported after 3 p.m. local time (1000 GMT) on Friday, with the final number of injured holding at nine. — Agencies

Seine reopens to Paris swimmers after century-long ban

PARIS - The River Seine reopened to swimmers on Saturday morning in Paris, allowing people to take a dip in the French capital's iconic waterway for the first time since 1923. Parisians and visitors looking to cool off this summer can dive in -- weather permitting -- at three bathing sites, including one a stone's throw from the Eiffel Tower. A few dozen people arrived ahead of the 8:00 am (0600 GMT) opening on Saturday at the Bras Marie zone in the city's historic centre, diving into the water for the long-awaited moment under the watchful eyes of lifeguards wearing fluorescent yellow T-shirts and carrying whistles. The seasonal opening of the Seine for swimming is seen as a key legacy of the Paris 2024 Olympics, when open water swimmers and triathletes competed in its waters which were specially cleaned for the event. The swimming zones are equipped with changing rooms, showers, and beach-style furniture, offering space for 150 to 300 people to relax, lay out their towels, and unwind from the city's hustle and bustle. Paris officials say they have taken several measures to ensure swimmers can safely enjoy the long-anticipated reopening, including daily water pollution testing and implementing a swim test for bathers. "It's a childhood dream to have people swimming in the Seine," said Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, who visited the bras Marie site on Saturday morning. But officials reminded swimmers of potential dangers, including strong currents, boat traffic, and an average depth of 3.5 metres. "The Seine remains a dangerous environment," said local official Elise Lavielle earlier this week. To mitigate that risk, lifeguards will assess visitors' swimming abilities before allowing independent access, while a decree issued in late June introduced fines for anyone swimming outside designated areas.

One Dead, Six Wounded In Indianapolis Shooting

One person was killed and six others wounded in a shooting in the US city of Indianapolis early Saturday, police said, a day after the country celebrated its independence day. The shooting occurred around 1:27 am (0527 GMT) as officers were investigating disturbances, deputy police operations chief Tanya Terry told a news conference. One was pronounced dead at the scene. Five wounded people were taken from the scene to hospital for treatment, while a sixth walked into a medical facility in a stable condition. Three of the victims were juveniles, including the person who died, Terry said, without providing the ages and conditions of the other victims. Police recovered several firearms at the scene and detained around seven people for questioning. Indianapolis police chief Chris Bailey condemned recurring violence in the city's downtown area, particularly involving young people. "A kid is dead tonight," Bailey told reporters. "It's unacceptable." The police chief said officers made about 20 arrests throughout the night and recovered guns from minors, including "an assault rifle stuffed in the front of his pants." Bailey criticised parents for allowing "hundreds of unsupervised kids" to roam the downtown area at night. "We are not your children's keeper. You are," he said. "Parents and guardians have got to step up." The chief said thousands of people had come downtown for fireworks and left peacefully, but others stayed and "caused trouble." The shooting marked the second weekend of violence in downtown Indianapolis, according to the police chief. Serious gun violence is common across the United States, where many states have few barriers to the purchasing of firearms, despite widespread support for greater gun control. There have been 189 mass shootings in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive -- which it defines as four or more people shot.

Blue Jays designate RHP Jose Urena for assignment

Field Level Media 05 Jul 2025, 09:24 GMT+10 (Photo credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images) The Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday designated right-hander Jose Urena for assignment. The 33-year-old has appeared in 239 MLB games in his career. In 2024, he went 5-8 with a 3.80 ERA in 33 outings for the Texas Rangers. Urena signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets during the offseason. On April 28, he made his season debut, allowing five earned runs in three innings of relief against the Washington Nationals. After only one game, the Mets designated him for assignment, and he elected free agency, signing with the Blue Jays. In Toronto, Urena posted a 3.65 ERA across 12 1/3 innings. In a corresponding move Saturday, the Blue Jays recalled left-hander Easton Lucas from Triple-A Buffalo. The 28-year-old already has thrown 21 2/3 innings for Toronto this season, producing a 2-2 record and a 5.82 ERA. --Field Level Media
