Samsung's New ‘Fan Edition' Earbuds Beat the Pricier Buds 3 Pro in One Key Way

After some major leaks earlier this month, Samsung's Galaxy Buds 3 FE are finally here, and on paper, they look like a pretty good deal. While the 'FE' moniker, short for Fan Edition, often signifies a lower price point in exchange for some compromises on features, the new Galaxy Buds 3 FE actually beats Samsung's Galaxy Buds 3 Pro in a couple of key areas, and one of those battlegrounds is battery life. According to Samsung, the $150 Buds 3 FE offer 6 hours of battery with active noise cancellation (ANC) activated and 8.5 hours with ANC off. That's compared to the $190 Buds 3 Pro battery life, which clocks in at 6 hours and 7 hours with ANC on and off, respectively. I would have liked to see the ANC battery life get a bump here too, but it's nice to know that if you need to, you can get an extra hour and a half for less money. Those battery life numbers aren't mind-blowing in the general field of wireless earbuds, but they do put the Galaxy Buds 3 FE on par with comparably priced buds from OnePlus. The other category that the Galaxy Buds FE 3 excel in is weight. These wireless earbuds are actually 5 grams lighter than the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, which isn't an enormous difference but is enough to give the FE a slight edge if you're comparing the two against each other. It's also worth noting that Samsung managed to decrease the weight while upgrading the battery life, which is always a feat worth mentioning when it comes to any gadget, earbuds included. The next biggest selling point is the fact that the Galaxy Buds FE 3 match a lot of the Pro features while keeping the starting price lower. The first thing you'll probably notice is that the new Buds FE 3 borrow the same AirPods-like design as the Buds 3 Pro, which is nice if you like Apple's white earbuds but maybe not so nice if you're looking for something different. There is a slight difference here in that the Galaxy Buds FE 3 come with a matte finish as opposed to the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro's glossy one, though, and they don't have any LED lights on the stems—sorry, blades—themselves. On top of a similar design, the Galaxy Buds FE 3 also come equipped with real-time AI translation features (only if you have a Samsung phone) and hands-free Gemini compatibility so you can activate and use your voice assistant without unlocking your phone. AI features probably won't be make-or-break for most people, but it's nice to know that they'll be there if you should need/want them. As is the case with any pair of wireless earbuds, the biggest question will be in the sound. One notable difference between the Buds 3 Pro and Buds 3 FE is that the former has a dual-driver design while the latter has just one driver. It's hard to say what kind of difference that will make without hearing them back-to-back, but I'm guessing the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro will have an edge when it comes to fidelity and dynamic range. Even with that difference, however, the Buds 3 FE feel like a good deal for the price, and if you're looking to save a little bit of money but not make any major compromises, this could be the pair of Samsung wireless earbuds you're looking for.

Samsung's budget Galaxy Buds 3 FE give you AirPods-like design and a battery bonus

Samsung has expanded its Galaxy Buds lineup with the 'Fan Edition' Galaxy Buds 3 FE, finally delivering a more affordable earbud alongside the existing Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro models it released in July 2024. Like its family members, the Galaxy Buds 3 FE commit to the move away from the circular earbud shape of Samsung earbuds of old to the familiar, AirPods-like 'stem' one, which Samsung calls its 'Blade' design. This can be pinched to make playback selections or swiped to adjust the volume. Recommended Videos Alternatively, you can go hands-free courtesy of Google Gemini integration – saying phrases like 'Hey Google' when you're wearing the earbuds can initiate voice playback controls, and when paired with a Galaxy phone there's the option of sending messages and checking emails via voice activation. Using the Galaxy AI Interpreter app, real-time translation can also be fed to the earbuds to facilitate conversations with someone speaking in another language. Neat. The Blade design isn't the only notable aspect of the new Samsung buds' physical design, either; the Buds3 FE have been blessed with an IP54 waterproof rating, making them suitable for wearing during sweaty workouts or out in rainy weather. Promising performance upgrades Like their 2023-released Galaxy Buds FE predecessor, the new Samsung budget earbuds have active noise cancellation onboard, only this time it has been improved to reduce ambient noise and therefore increase its effectiveness to isolate you and your music or voice calls. They also sport a larger driver than the previous-gen buds for supposedly 'rich, powerful sound with deep bass and clear treble', which bodes well for the new FEs considering we called the originals 'clear, full-frequency sound signature, with a generous soundstage'. Perhaps unsurprisingly considering their modest price point, the Galaxy Buds 3 FE settle for Samsung's SSC Bluetooth codec alongside the 'vanilla' AAC and SBC. While the higher-quality aptX and LDAC codec can be found in similarly affordable wireless earbuds such as our favorites, the Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC, which supports the latter codec, their absence is hardly a deal-breaker at this price. One thing that does thoroughly impress at this price level is the Galaxy Buds 3 FE's battery life – you get 8.5 hours in the buds (or 6 hours with ANC on) and an extra 24 hours of juice in the charging case (or 30 hours with ANC on). Plenty of much pricier earbuds don't manage those numbers (as you can see in our best wireless earbuds guide) – including Samsung's flagship Buds 3 Pro, which have a maximum on-bud battery life of seven hours. Available in black or gray, the Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 FE will become available in the US on September 4, priced at $150, with availability in other territories to follow.

Samsung's New Galaxy Buds 3 FE Cost $100 Less Than the Flagship Galaxy Buds 3 Pro

Samsung's $250 flagship Galaxy Buds 3 Pro are among the top noise-canceling earbuds. Now Samsung has launched the more affordable "fan edition"Galaxy Buds 3 FE that look nearly identical to the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro but are missing those buds' LED lighting element, have a single-driver design instead of a dual-driver design and leave off a few other features. They're available on Sept. 4 in black or gray. Read more: Best wireless earbuds of 2025 Like the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, the Galaxy Buds 3 FE have a noise-isolating design with silicone ear tips, and they feature noise-canceling as well as a transparency mode. Samsung is touting their AI features, which include "accessing Gemini for conversational AI assistance and Galaxy AI Interpreter app to use Real-Time Interpreter or Live Translate to translate phone calls." The Galaxy Buds 3 FE's "blade" design is a departure from the early Galaxy Buds FE ($70), which have a stemless design with wing tips that help lock the buds in your ears. Enlarge Image The buds in gray. Screenshot by David Carnoy/CNET Since I haven't tried the Galaxy Buds 3 FE yet I can't tell you how much their performance differs from the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro's, but I suspect there will be a slight drop off in sound quality due to the fact that the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro have a planar driver alongside a dynamic driver that helps improve clarity and treble performance. The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro are regularly on sale (you can get the Latin American version for $125 on Amazon) and Samsung says you can trade-in any wired or wireless headset and receive up to $30 off the Galaxy Buds 3 FE. So they, too should be regularly discounted and perhaps dip to around $100 during the holiday buying season. I'll let you know how they compare to the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and other earbuds in their price range as soon as I get my hands on a review sample. For now, here are the Galaxy Buds3 FE's key specs: Samsung Galaxy Buds3 FE key specs
