Shakira and The Weeknd to rock for a cause

New York – Get ready for a star-studded spectacle in New York's Central Park this September as The Weeknd and Shakira gear up to headline this year's Global Citizen Festival — and they're bringing the big beats for an even bigger cause. Set for September 27, the festival promises more than just a night of chart-toppers. While Blinding Lights and Hips Don't Lie are sure to get the crowds moving, the event's spotlight is firmly on action — from expanding energy access in Africa to defending the Amazon rainforest and boosting education for children worldwide. The all-star lineup also features rising talents Tyla, Ayra Starr, and Mariah the Scientist, with Hugh Jackman hosting the evening. And unlike your average concert, this one's free — but with a twist. Fans earn their tickets by taking action through the Global Citizen app. Think recording videos calling on world leaders or mentoring youth — activism with a playlist. Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans says the artists' connection to communities overcoming poverty adds weight to the mission. 'They bring perspective into Central Park at a moment when the world needs unity now more than ever,' he told AP. So, what's on the festival's to-do list? Deliver clean energy to a million people in Africa. Raise $200mn to help indigenous leaders protect a stretch of the Amazon the size of Italy. And secure $30mn to support literacy programmes for kids. Big goals — but with big names behind them. This isn't The Weeknd's first philanthropic tour stop — he's donating $1 from every concert ticket to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. Shakira, meanwhile, is no stranger to using her voice offstage. 'Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world,' she said. 'I can't wait to perform, unite, and inspire action.'

Tyla joins The Weeknd and Shakira at the 2025 Global Citizen Festival

Global star Tyla Seethal is set to light up the 2025 Global Citizen Festival alongside international icons The Weeknd and Shakira. Scheduled for September 27, 2025 on the iconic Great Lawn of Central Park, this year's festival promises a lineup filled with electrifying performances, including contributions from Ayra Starr and Mariah the Scientist. Just days after delivering the inaugural halftime show for the FIFA Club World Cup, Global Citizen unveiled this star-studded lineup. The festival is more than just a celebration of music; it aims to tackle pressing global issues through concerted efforts from artists, advocates, and the public alike. Hosted by esteemed Global Citizen ambassador Hugh Jackman, the event will once again draw attention to pivotal humanitarian campaigns. The 2025 festival will focus on four key initiatives: providing energy access for one million people across Africa, ensuring 30 000 children worldwide gain access to quality education, mobilising $200 million to protect 30 million hectares of the Amazon rainforest, and registering 40 000 New Yorkers for community volunteering efforts. 'I'm honoured to headline the incredible Global Citizen Festival in Central Park this September. Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world. I can't wait to perform, unite, and inspire action,' expressed Shakira, underlining her fervour for music as a catalyst for change. This will mark Hugh Jackman's eleventh year as host. 'I'm thrilled by the progress we've made over the years,' he remarked. 'The growing impact of the Global Citizen movement touches every corner of the world, and I'm eager to advocate alongside my fellow ambassadors, performers, world leaders, and private sector executives to leave the world better than we found it.' The festival is backed by numerous major partners, including Cisco, Authentic Brands Group, Bridgewater Associates, Delta Air Lines, PayPal, Venmo, and Procter & Gamble. The production is spearheaded by Emmy Award-winning companies Done+Dusted and Diversified Production Services, ensuring a world-class experience. Hugh Evans, Co-Founder and CEO of Global Citizen, stressed the urgency of the festival's mission: 'Ending extreme poverty is within our reach — but only if we come together to ensure governments and corporations deliver on their promises.' He highlighted the importance of renewable energy, Amazon protection, and investment in future education as critical areas for action. Cisco's Fran Katsoudas, EVP and Chief People, Policy and Purpose Officer, echoed commitment to these goals: 'Solving the complex problems of our world requires bold partners, daily action, and the influence of young innovators and activators. We're proud to support Global Citizen's international movement and flagship festivals to accelerate our impact while inspiring new generations to lead.' Saturday Star

The Weeknd and Shakira will headline Global Citizen Festival supporting energy access and the Amazon

By JAMES POLLARD The Weeknd and Shakira — two of the world's biggest touring artists — will headline this fall's Global Citizen Festival in New York's Central Park, supporting campaigns to improve energy access across Africa and defend the Amazon against deforestation. Global Citizen announced Tuesday that the pop stars behind such hits as 'Blinding Lights' and 'Hips Don't Lie" will be joined by Tyla, Ayra Starr and Mariah the Scientist at the concert on Sept. 27. Hosted by actor Hugh Jackman, the annual event highlights the anti-poverty nonprofit's selected humanitarian priorities and urges attendees to collectively tackle those issues through direct support. 'The fact that these artists have immediate proximity to communities that have either recently emerged out of extreme poverty, or are emerging out of extreme poverty, gives them amazing perspective,' Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans told The Associated Press. 'And they bring that perspective into Central Park at this moment where I think the world needs a moment of unity now more than ever.' The festival's goals involve securing commitments to bring clean, reliable energy to 1 million people in Africa; mobilizing $200 million for indigenous and local entrepreneurs to protect an Italy-sized chunk of the Amazon rainforest; and raising at least $30 million to help community-based education programs improve children's literacy. Tickets to the festival are free, but fans must earn them by taking actions through the Global Citizen app. Opportunities include uploading videos calling on German and French leaders to back the Amazon protection plan and volunteering to mentor young people worldwide in career development. This year's calls to action reflect the changing nature of online advocacy campaigns. Organizers find that social media posts and email-driven appeals don't carry the same weight as they did when Global Citizen first started rallying concertgoers. Evans said user-generated content such as a self-recorded clip creates "quality engagement" and makes it almost impossible to game the system. In The Weeknd and Shakira, Global Citizen is reuniting with previous artistic supporters at a time when they are packing stadiums. The Weeknd, who this month wrapped a four-night run of sold-out performances at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium, is donating $1 from every ticket sale to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. Shakira, who recently completed seven consecutive sold-out shows in Mexico City, joined Coldplay onstage during a 2017 edition of the festival in Germany. "Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world," Shakira said in a statement. 'I can't wait to perform, unite, and inspire action.' © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Tyla and Ayra Starr to headline a fest in New York

The 2025 Global Citizen Festival is set to return to New York City's Central Park on September 27. A pair of Africa's brightest will take centre stage with Nigeria's Ayra Starr and South Africa's Tyla to share top billing alongside an array of global heavy hitters. A few tried and tested acts when it comes to large arenas will be joining these African giants. Namely, The Weeknd, Shakira and Mariah the Scientist. 'I'm honoured to headline the incredible Global Citizen Festival in Central Park this September. Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world. I can't wait to perform, unite, and inspire action,' said Colombian popstar Shakira. Tyla and Ayra will lend their celebrity and talents to this spectacle as ambassadors of the resurgence of African pride and preference as it pertains to the sonics of the continent. Australian native and a Hollywood favourite in Hugh Jackman who will handle the hosting duties for the eleventh time. The aim remains the same, with the idea being to cultivate unity and emphasise activism through music and the arts. Hosted for the eleventh time by Hugh Jackman who is best known for playing Wolverine in the X-Men movie franchise. The long-standing Global Citizen Ambassador highlighted how this event has a mechanism attached to it in which fans can earn tickets. This can be done by showing an interest in pertinent global issues via the Global Citizen application. 'The growing impact of Global Citizen touches every corner of the world. I'm eager to advocate alongside ambassadors, performers, and world leaders,'' Jackman intimated. The 2025 agenda for this festival is looking to target three pressing outcomes. The overarching entity hopes to provide energy access for one million people in Africa. They're also looking to funnel $200 million (3.58 billion ZAR) to conserve and protect 30 million hectares of the Amazon rainforest. The idea is to protect 20 billion trees in this crucial area of the planet. Funding quality education for roughly 30 000 children worldwide will also be a matter of concern for Global Citizen. Festival organisers are going all out with their social investment initiatives, with 1.5 billion dollars (26 billion ZAR) being invested towards training 50 000 young Africans in renewable energy strategies. The European Commission and the governments of Denmark, Australia, and the UK have committed to infrastructure initiatives that could provide power to homes, schools, and hospitals for over a million people. Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), will also be involved in this event. The FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund is hoping to provide children with reading and writing tools. This will be funded through ticket sales from large global gatherings and tapping philanthropists for donations and the like. This is a lot on offer, especially for the African continent, and so naturally, we will be keeping a keen eye on all these initiatives and promises. These charitable draw cards will garner the attention of the masses along with the talent on offer, but will this translate to funding reaching the areas it is meant to, is the question on many people's minds.
