Google's versatile Keep app gets a colorful new look on Android thanks to a Material 3 redesign

Google's Keep app can do many things. It can help you create a shopping list and allow you to add a check box that you mark when a product has been shopped for. You can use Keep to take quick notes when an idea pops into your head. If you meet someone and want to keep their phone or other contact info handy, the Keep app is the perfect place to save it. Using the cloud to sync the content of the app, what you type on your phone can be saved on your laptop and accessed via the app whenever you need the data. Even though it seemed that Google was ready to give up on the app at one point, it has recently pushed out an update for the smartphone version of the app based on a Material 3 redesign. This will be version 5.25.252.00.90 for the Android variant of the Keep app with Material 3 Expressive design elements. In one change, the account switcher and the three line hamburger icon menu are no longer contained inside the app's search bar. On the screen used for taking notes, the buttons now have rounded corners and the background features contrasting colors. Dynamic Theming, used on most apps with a Material 3 design, pulls the most prominent colors found on your wallpaper and applies it to the app. Google also enlarged the toolbox icons found near the top of the app, and now they are seen with contrasting background colors and rounded corners. While the new UI look for the Keep app appears to be rolling out in line with the latest version of the app in the Google Play Store, some say that this is a server-side update. I can tell you that it has not yet hit the Keep app on my Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.1. Personally, I have found Google Keep to be a versatile app that you can use to create lists, notes, and more. What is great is that I can share my notes and lists between different devices, and know that when I add a note to my Keep app using my Pixel 6 Pro , it will show up on the iOS Keep app installed on my iPhone. Google kills its Keep app on Apple Watch

The Google graveyard has claimed another victim: the company has killed the Apple Watch version of its Keep app. While the note-taking app is still available for iPhone and iPad, the 2.2025.26200 Google Keep App Store update released on Monday has removed watchOS support, bringing the total number of Google apps for Apple Watch back down to three. This sours some hope that Google would expand its watchOS app offerings after quietly rolling out a new native Google Calendar app for Apple Watch yesterday, having initially pulled several Google apps from the platform in 2017. The Google Keep app was introduced to watchOS in 2019 but has largely been neglected since, lacking any meaningful updates. Now, Google Calendar, Maps, and YouTube Music are all that remain, with the latter two also in need of modernization. While outdated, Keep was still functional on Apple Watch, providing a convenient way for users to quickly create lists or jot down information on the go. There doesn't appear to be a notable third-party alternative on watchOS to replace it. Its removal confirms several reports made by Keep users on Reddit last month, who said Google had notified them that 'the watch app would be deprecated soon.' We have reached out to Google to clarify why the app was removed. Keep is still available for smartwatches running on Google's own Wear OS platform. That's unlikely to be of any comfort to Apple Watch users who are disrupted by the removal, however; they will need to wait until Apple brings a native version of the Notes app to watchOS 26 this fall.

Google Keep's Material 3 Expressive makeover is starting to roll out

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google Keep's Material 3 Expressive makeover has started rolling out to users. It brings visual changes for several UI elements, including the search bar, toolbar, and search filters. The redesign is not widely available at the moment, but it should reach more users in the coming days. Google is steadily updating its apps in line with Android's new Material 3 Expressive design language, and Google Keep is the latest to receive an expressive makeover. As spotted in a teardown earlier this year, the update brings changes for the app's search bar and other UI elements, giving the app a fresh look. Google Keep's Material 3 Expressive redesign is rolling out to some users on version 5.25.252.00.90, but it's not widely available yet. According to user reports on Telegram, it includes a slightly taller but narrower search bar that no longer houses the account switcher and hamburger menu buttons. Google has also updated the text inside the search bar, which now states 'Search Keep' instead of 'Search your notes,' and the shape of the search filter chips. The redesign brings visual changes to the toolbar as well, which now features larger icons with rounded backgrounds. The buttons at the top of the edit screen have received similar rounded backgrounds, and image previews within notes now feature margins to the left and right and rounded corners. Although minimal, these changes give Google Keep a more modern look that closely aligns with Android's new design language. Other Google apps, including Gmail, Google Wallet, and Google Phone, have received similar changes in the last few weeks, and it shouldn't be long before Google releases the expressive redesign for the rest of the apps in its portfolio. Google just killed one of my favorite Apple Watch apps — at the same time as introducing another one

Interacting with Google's services can be something of a poisoned chalice — just ask anyone who got on board with Google Stadia. But the company is doing some funny things with Apple's watchOS platform right now, including killing off one of my most-used apps. Generally speaking, I need cross-platform functionality from life-organising apps like note taking, reminders or calendars. Which is why Google Keep has been a go-to of mine for years as one of the best note taking apps. Alas, Google has decided that Google Keep for the Apple Watch has served its time. As noted by 9to5 Google, the app is no longer available on Apple's wearable after being largely ignored since it was launched in 2019 anyway. Google Keep was as barebones as it got — no complications or any support for some of the newer watchOS features that Apple added. But the fact it synced with the Google Keep apps I have installed on all my other devices — Android, iOS or Windows — made it phenomenally useful to be able to glance at on my wrist. Even if I couldn't actually interact with it in any meaningful way. Google's approach to watchOS in general could be described as lackadaisical. YouTube Music for watchOS has been as neglected as Google Keep and Google Maps just gives you the basics: travel time and information on your current trip. Contrast the functionality of Google's family of WatchOS apps with their Wear OS counterparts and you'll understand that Google wants to prioritize its own platform. Google Maps on something like the Pixel Watch 3 lets you search and browse right from your wrist. What makes this whole thing especially puzzling is that Google has also decided now is the time to launch its Calendar app for the Apple Watch. Google Calendar for the Apple Watch is a very simple extension to the iOS that shows you the events in your week and any Google Tasks you've added. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. You can tap on each task to see more details and there's the option to color-code cards. Unlike Google Keep, there are also a couple of home screen complications to use. Either the circular Today or the What's Next complication that can be circular, rectangular or sit as a Smart Stack widget. The former shows the abbreviated day of the week alongside the date while the later gives you your next event. It's simple stuff and you're probably sensing a theme here. Despite being the most popular wearable by a long shot, Google just isn't that interested doing more than the bare minimum for the Apple Watch. The good news for note-taking Apple Watch wearers is the upcoming watchOS 26 release in the fall is scheduled to bring a full Notes app to the best Apple Watches.

One of Google's most useful Apple Watch apps is suddenly gone

But even those are showing signs of neglect — YouTube Music still lacks offline downloads, and Maps hasn't seen a major update since 2020. A one-step-forward, one-step-back strategy? The removal of Keep, coupled with the barebones launch of Calendar, highlights Google's inconsistent strategy on Apple Watch. For a company with so many user-facing services, its watchOS footprint remains surprisingly thin and often feels like an afterthought. Meanwhile, yesterday's surprise debut of a new Google Calendar app on watchOS offered a rare sign of engagement from the Google Workspace team on Apple's smartwatch platform. That app, like Keep, is stripped down in functionality — offering only a week's worth of events and tasks in a read-only list format — but it does include complications and Smart Stack support, helping it blend more seamlessly with modern Keep now gone, Google's active watchOS lineup is back down to just three apps: Maps, YouTube Music, and Calendar.
