Google's AI Overviews have 2B monthly users, AI Mode 100M in the US and India

Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared an update on the adoption of consumer-facing AI apps and features, including Google Search's AI Overviews, Gemini, and AI Mode. On the company's Q2 2025 call with investors, Pichai shared that AI Overviews — a Google Search feature offering an AI summary of search results available in 200 countries and territories — now has 2 billion monthly users, up from 1.5 billion in May 2025. In addition, Google's Gemini app has grown to 450 million monthly active users. 'We continue to see strong growth and engagement with daily requests growing over 50% from Q1,' Pichai said of the app. Meanwhile, AI Mode — a way to use Google Search via an AI chat experience to get more in-depth answers — has 100 million monthly active users. The service is available in the U.S. and, more recently, India, but is still rolling out. On the developer front, Google said more than 9 million have built with Gemini and over 70 million videos have been produced with the Veo 3 AI model since May. Google Vids, a Veo-powered feature for text-to-video AI generation in Google Workspace, now has nearly 1 million monthly active users. In Google Meet, over 50 million people used AI-powered meeting notes in Google Meet, the company also said. The stats are meant to illustrate consumer demand for AI features, though it's arguably difficult to determine how many people have truly and willingly turned to AI in Search, when the feature has been thrust upon them as aggressively as it has been. Across Google's platform and products, Google quantified its growth by monthly tokens processed, saying that it had announced at its developer conference in May that it had processed 480 trillion monthly tokens, and that figure has now doubled to 980 trillion monthly tokens. 'We are seeing significant demand for our comprehensive AI product portfolio,' Pichai told investors. 'Of course, this is all possible because of the long-term investments we have made in our differentiated, full-stack approach to AI.' Investors, however, reacted negatively to Google's plans to increase its capital expenditure spending to keep up with the AI race, which sent the stock slipping shortly after earnings were announced.

Google's CEO says ‘AI is positively impacting every part of the business'

Google is all-in on AI, and based on the company's latest quarterly earnings, AI has been good for its bottom line. In a press release for Alphabet's Q2 2025 earnings, CEO Sundar Pichai says that 'AI is positively impacting every part of the business' and that features like AI Overviews and AI Mode are 'performing well.' The company is also planning to increase its planned capital expenditures for the year up to $85 billion, according to Pichai. That's an increase of $10 billion, and could be a sign that Alphabet wants to keep pace with massive data center buildouts from companies like OpenAI and Meta. For the quarter, Alphabet reported revenue of $96.4 billion, up 14 percent year over year, with revenues for its 'Google Search' segment reaching $54.1 billion. Pichai's comments on AI align with recent findings from Pew, which suggested that AI Overviews appear to be successful at getting people answers but at the expense of clicks through to the websites that would otherwise offer them. During the second quarter, Google hosted its annual I/O developer conference, which was jam-packed with AI-focused announcements like the rollout of AI Mode for Search (which news publishers have called 'theft'), upgrades to its video and image generation models, Gemini AI in Chrome, and much more powerful smart replies in Gmail. (Based on that event, Google's future is Google googling.) And just ahead of I/O, Google hosted an Android-focused show where it revealed the youthful new design language for Android 16. At the same time, Google is anticipating the ruling from the remedy phase of the Department of Justice's lawsuit, which took place during the second quarter as well. Last August, a judge ruled that Google 'is a monopolist' in that antitrust case, and remedies could include Google getting broken up. (A lot of companies have expressed interest in buying Chrome.) The company also changed its 'G' logo for the first time in nearly a decade. Alphabet will be hosting its earnings webcast beginning at 4:30PM ET. ChatGPT Surpasses 2.5 Billion Daily Requests: A Threat to Google's Throne? - Jordan News

In a clear indication of the explosive growth in generative artificial intelligence, OpenAI has announced that its chatbot, ChatGPT, now handles over 2.5 billion requests per day. This staggering number translates to more than 912.5 billion requests annually, underscoring the rapid global adoption of the tool. اضافة اعلان While Google Search still maintains a significant lead with around 5 trillion searches per year, the accelerating growth of ChatGPT poses a direct challenge to Google's dominance, particularly to its advertising-driven business model. Recent data highlights a sharp increase in ChatGPT's user base, with weekly active users jumping from 300 million in December to over 500 million by March 2025. This surge reflects the expanding reliance on generative AI for various daily applications by users around the world. Amid this intensifying competition, OpenAI is preparing to launch a new AI-powered web browser in the coming weeks, according to Reuters. This move aims to directly compete with Google Chrome and follows the recent release of the ChatGPT Agent tool, which allows users to automate tasks on their devices. It's also worth noting that other AI tools are seeing significant user growth as well. This includes xAI's Grok chatbot, integrated into the X platform (formerly Twitter), Meta AI embedded within Meta's platforms, and the AI search engine Perplexity—all of which signal that the generative AI landscape is becoming more competitive by the day.

Google wants Search Live to feel like a phone call (APK teardown)

Lanh Nguyen / Android Authority TL;DR An Android Authority teardown has revealed some UI tweaks potentially coming to Google's Search Live feature. The Search Live notification could get interface changes to make your session feel more like a phone call. This change comes as Google brings visual tweaks to its other Android apps. Google announced a new Search Live feature at its I/O event earlier this year. This lets you have a natural conversation with Google Search, akin to Gemini Live. Now, it looks like this feature is getting some handy UI tweaks. Authority Insights story on Android Authority. Discover You're reading anstory on Android Authority. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. We conducted a teardown of the Google app (version beta) and discovered that Search Live could get UI tweaks similar to a phone call interface. More specifically, the Search Live notification could have call-related chips. Check out this change in the second image below. Current New The change could result in a red Hang up button and a green Turn off microphone button in the Search Live notification. By contrast, Search Live currently offers simple text-based options for Turn off microphone and End session. This isn't a massive change, but it suggests that Google wants Search Live to feel like a phone call. The overhauled Search Live notification even describes your session as an 'ongoing call.' I'm guessing Google is leaning on these phone call trappings to make for a more familiar-feeling experience. These UI tweaks also come as Google brings Material 3 Expressive changes to more apps. These tweaks have come to Google TV on Android, Google Keep, Google Wallet, and plenty more apps. We expect even more Google apps to be overhauled ahead of Android 16's Expressive update. Got a tip? OpenAI lifts the lid on ChatGPT's daily prompt count — and it's big

Since its debut in November 2022, OpenAI's ChatGPT has rapidly become one of the fastest-growing consumer apps, and is up there with the likes of Instagram and Threads when it comes to records in user growth. The first public release of the company's AI-powered chatbot stirred global interest in generative AI, and since then the tool has only gained more momentum. OpenAI recently revealed to Axios that its AI chatbot now handles more than 2.5 billion user prompts per day worldwide, a remarkable leap from just 1 billion daily queries in December 2024. And of that figure, around 330 million prompts come from U.S.-based users alone. Recommended Videos To put that in perspective, it means ChatGPT is processing more than 1.7 million prompts every minute, or 29,000 every second. While ChatGPT's 2.5 billion daily prompts are far fewer than the 14 billion or so queries that Google Search handles on a daily basis, the usage of ChatGPT is fundamentally different in that it doesn't just serve up web links, but actively helps users carry out tasks, automate workflows, conduct deep research, provide tutoring, and a whole lot more besides. This important difference means that ChatGPT acts not just as an information finder, but also as a collaborative productivity tool. The rapid adoption of ChatGPT highlights its growing presence in our digital lives, and it's clear that the technology is reshaping the way we interact with information online. In just a short time, ChatGPT has gone from a curious new tool to an integral part of the online experience, and is now a key example of how AI is transforming our digital lives. But of course, ChatGPT is not the only generative-AI tool out there, with OpenAI facing tough competition from a growing field of rivals, including tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Meta, as well as a slew of startups, all of them investing huge sums of money in AI productivity tools in a bid to get ahead. Indeed, the eagerness to dominate the sector has prompted some pushback, with generative-AI firms known to train their AI models on the work of creatives without permission and payment, though recently some have begun inking licensing deals with publishers, artists, and rights holders in a bid to address copyright concerns.
