Naga organisations in Manipur urge PM, HM to halt fencing of India-Myanmar border

Naga organisations in Manipur urge PM, HM to halt fencing of India-Myanmar border (file photo) Imphal, Several Naga organisations in Manipur on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to immediately halt the fencing of India-Myanmar border and to restore the Free Movement Regime (FMR) within 20 days. The Naga organisations, which included the United Naga Council, All Naga Students' Association, Manipur, Naga Women's Union and Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights South submitted the petition through Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The Raj Bhavan in an official statement said that representatives of UNC, ANSAM, NWU, and NPMHR-S met Governor Bhalla on Tuesday. "During the meeting, the representatives expressed concerns over ongoing developments impacting the hill areas, particularly in relation to the Free Movement Regime and border fencing," it said, adding that the "governor acknowledged the grievances raised and said that the matter would be looked into." Expressing strong resentment against abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the accelerated ongoing border fencing construction along the India-Myanmar border, the Naga civil organisations said several forms of protests, including "picketing of government offices in Naga inhabited areas have been undertaken along with protest rallies in Naga inhabited hill districts." Serving a twenty-day ultimatum, the Naga organisations said "the government of India must revoke the notification/order related to the abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) immediately." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The government's revised border guidelines issued in December 2024 limit cross-border movement under FMR to just 10 km from the border and impose a "border pass" system. Under the earlier FMR, every member of the hill tribes, who is either a citizen of India or a citizen of Myanmar and who is resident of any area within 16 km on either side of the border, can cross over on production of a border pass with one year's validity and can stay up to two weeks per visit.

J&K Police Seize Properties Belonging To Pakistan-Based Kashmiri Terrorist In Kupwara

Jammu and Kashmir Police have seized properties belonging to a Pakistan-based Kashmiri terrorist handler and top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (JUM) in Kupwara's Sogam area. The action was taken against Ghulam Rasool Shah, alias Rafia Rasool Shah, son of Abdul Jabbar Shah. As part of the government's ongoing crackdown on individuals involved in militancy and anti-national activities, a total of five kanals and three marlas of land were attached under Section 25 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Shah, who is currently operating from across the border, has been accused of orchestrating and facilitating terror activities in the region for several years. The property was seized in connection with FIR No. 276/2022, registered at Kupwara Police Station under sections 120B, 121A, 122, 123 of the IPC and sections 17, 18, 18A, 18B, 20, 38, 39, and 40 of the UAPA. This move is seen as part of broader efforts to dismantle the logistical, financial, and operational networks of terrorists and their handlers. The Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), continue their crackdown on anti-national elements and the support structures of terrorist organisations in the region. Earlier on June 21, Jammu and Kashmir's Handwara Police attached immovable properties belonging to two individuals from Monbal, Handwara, who stand accused in a long-pending terrorism case. The accused individuals whose properties have been attached have been identified as Mohd Shafi Bara and Mustafa. The attachment has been executed in connection with FIR No. 198/2003 registered at Police Station Handwara under stringent provisions of law including Sections 13 & 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Sections 2/3 & 3/4 of the Explosives Substances Act, and Sections 120B, 121A, 302, 307 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC). Both individuals had exfiltrated to Pakistan and have since been actively involved in promoting terrorism, coordinating terror-related activities from across the border, and orchestrating multiple terror incidents in the region.

Channel crossings continue amid crunch talks over migrant deal

Migrants are making the journey across the English Channel as Sir Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are in crunch talks over a deal to curb the crossings. Pictures show people wearing life jackets arriving in Dover, Kent disembarking from a Border Force boat amid sunny weather on Thursday. Border Force vessels have been sent as part of the response to multiple boats on Thursday morning, according to HM coastguard. A spokesman said: 'HM Coastguard has been co-ordinating a response to multiple incidents involving small boats in the Channel this morning, 10 July. 'UK Border Force vessels have been sent as part of this response.' Reform UK leader Nigel Farage posted on X that he was also in the Channel and saw 78 migrants, including four women and children. Speaking to GB News from a boat in the Channel, he said: 'This is a classic day in the English Channel over the last five years when the weather's calm, or a red day, as they call it. 'You've got a migrant boat and we've seen it through the binoculars. 'There's about 70 people on board, being escorted, all the way over by the French Navy and behind us, we have Border Force sitting on the 12-mile line, waiting for the handover.' It comes as the Prime Minister and French president said a 'new deterrent' was needed to stop small boats crossing the English Channel. Sir Keir hopes President Macron will sign up to a 'one in, one out' deal on Thursday, the last day of Mr Macron's state visit to the UK. There are 78 illegal migrants on board this boat in the English Channel. Only 4 of them are women and children. Are you watching @DarrenPJones? — Nigel Farage MP (@Nigel_Farage) July 10, 2025 Under the terms of the deal, Britain would accept migrants with links to the country in exchange for sending others back across the Channel. More than 21,000 people have arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel so far this year, which is a record for this point in the year since data collection began in 2018. But ahead of the agreement, Asylum Matters executive director Louise Calvey said: 'Another grubby trade in human lives will do nothing more than remove people from this country back into the hands of people smugglers, back to French shores where they'll face the escalating police violence that has been agreed alongside this deal- violence that will cost people their lives. 'The only way to stop people from making dangerous journeys is to give them safe routes to seek sanctuary.' Speaking in Parliament as part of his state visit to the UK on Tuesday, Mr Macron said France and the UK have a 'shared responsibility to address irregular migration with humanity, solidarity and fairness.' A Home Office spokesperson said the Government has a 'serious plan' to crack down on people smuggling gangs.
