Google's Pixel 10 may get magnetic Qi2 charging after all

Google's upcoming Pixel 10 may support wireless Qi2 charging natively (without a case), which would make it the first Pixel model and one of the few Android phones to do so. A new image from mega-leaker Evan Blass shows a Qi2 charger attached to the back of a naked Pixel 10 device, meaning it likely has the magnets required to support the fast-charging system. Rumors bubbled up last month that Google was working on a new lineup of "Pixelsnap" Qi2 accessories, leading to speculation that the Pixel 10 may debut that much-requested feature. Another rumor suggested that a case may be required for Qi2 charging after all, but the image of a Pixel 10 with a Qi2 charger appears to confirm that Qi2 will be native after all. On top of faster charging speeds up to 15 watts or higher in later revisions, Qi2 requires smartphones to have embedded magnets for easy alignment of peripherals. So far, though, only recent iPhone models and just one smartphone, the HMD Skyline, have said magnets and thus offer native Qi2 support. Other popular phones like the Galaxy S25 are only "Qi2 ready," meaning they can charge wirelessly at up to 15 watts, but don't have the required magnets inside. Instead, you have to purchase a compatible case with a built-in magnetic mounting system. The same applies to OnePlus's latest phone. If the Pixel 10 does support Qi2 directly and Google introduces a new lineup of Qi2 charging accessories, that will provide a big boost to the ecosystem. The news also provides a nearly complete picture of the Pixel 10 launch, on top of information we already knew: Up to a 6.8-inch Super Actua display, Google Tensor G5 chip, a triple rear camera system, 8K video recording and up to a 100-hour battery life on the Pixel 10 Pro XL. All we need now is confirmation of all that from Google, which will likely announce that device (including a Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Fold) along with the Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Buds Pro 2 and other accessories at its Made by Google event on August 20.

UK-India FTA to boost medical device trade amid country of origin concerns

Bilateral trade in pharmaceuticals and medical devices is set to receive a boost post the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), according to industry veterans. India's imports of medical devices from the UK grew by 36 percent to Rs 2,295 crore in FY24, while exports to the UK increased by 13 percent to Rs 1,015 crore. Rajiv Nath, Chairman and MD of Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices (HMD)—one of the top three disposable syringe makers in the world—and the forum coordinator of the medical devices industry body Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AiMeD), believes that bilateral trade will rise on both sides post the FTA. "Our top exports to the UK were contact lenses, diagnostic reagents, surgical instruments, and PPE kits, while our major imports were oxygen therapy equipment like ventilators, X-ray equipment, diagnostic testing reagents, and IVD analysis instruments. Mostly, small and mid-sized manufacturers export through distributors in niche markets," Nath said. 'Previously, medical devices imported into the UK were duty-free, so tariff restrictions were not an issue, but regulatory approval costs and time were a challenge. We sought recognition of Indian CDSCO regulatory approval or QCI's voluntary Indian certification for medical devices to fast-track regulatory approval by the UK MHRA and address non-tariff barriers faced by Indian exporters, and we look forward to an update on this,' Nath added. Regarding imports into India, AiMeD has emphasized the need for strict monitoring and verification of Rules of Origin to prevent misuse of the FTA through the potential routing of third-country products as purportedly UK-made goods. 'We welcome UK-made medical products into India via this FTA,' he added. Import duties levied by India were mostly at 7.5 percent, which, post-FTA, are expected to come down in a phased manner. The industry is, however, awaiting the fine print. As part of this agreement, import duties on MedTech products will be reduced from approximately 15 percent to around 3 percent, significantly lowering costs and improving access to advanced medical technologies, said Pavan Choudary, Chairman of the Medical Technology Association of India (MTaI). For pharmaceutical exports, the UK is already an important and growing market. Companies like Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, and Aurobindo have a presence in the UK. 'With India's pharmaceutical exports to the UK reaching $914 million in FY24, the agreement strengthens supply chains, enhances access to affordable medicines, and drives Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). This partnership paves the way for collaborations in bulk drug imports, CDMO, and joint research, empowering India's competitive edge and promoting global partnerships,' said Namit Joshi, Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Exports Promotion Council. Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, noted that the pharma sector will have opportunities to supply affordable and quality-assured medicine, contributing to better patient care in the UK. 'We are awaiting further details to identify specific areas where these opportunities can be effectively leveraged,' Jain said.

HMD to foray in India's sub-₹10,000 5G smartphone segment: Ravi Kunwar

NEW DELHI: HMD said India remains a key market for the brand from a revenue contribution and manufacturing perspective, and it is working with both mainline and digital commerce platforms to sell handsets. 'For us, India remains a key focus market as a brand. To meet the specific needs of Indian consumers, we have introduced several devices tailored for this market, including HMD-branded and Nokia devices. We are also preparing to launch a new 5G smartphone priced under ₹10,000, targeting the high demand for affordable devices in India,' Ravi Kunwar, vice-president (VP) & CEO, HMD India and APAC, told ETTelecom . 'India remains our largest market by resources and financial contribution, and we are committed to expanding our operations, partnerships, and product offerings to strengthen our market position in both feature phones and smartphones,' he added. ETTelecom in its February 7, 2025, edition, reported that the sub-₹10,000 5G smartphone shipments may contribute to the overall industry's volumes despite multiple challenges, albeit in single digits. The brand is present in more than 1 lakh traditional or mainline retail stores in India, but it is now 'significantly working' with both e-commerce platforms, such as Amazon, and quick-commerce channels, including Blinkit, Kunwar said. HMD's brand e-store, according to him, is expanding and strengthening in terms of product availability and distribution channels. 'Our strategy involves working closely with distributors and retailers, offering comprehensive support and incentives, as well as engaging in robust marketing activities to optimize reach and execution, especially ahead of major sales cycles,' he said. The top executive's comments come at a time when HMD is scaling back its operations in the USA amid a 'challenging geopolitical and economic environment', the international media reported recently. HMD, in 2016, had bought the Nokia feature phone business from Microsoft and had also secured a license to sell Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets, particularly in the mid-range segment. However, HMD Global is now focused on selling smartphones under its own brand and exploring white-label manufacturing opportunities. This followed after HMD signed an agreement with Finnish Nokia in 2023 to ramp down the smartphone business, with which it had forayed into the market in 2016. Over the past couple of years, we've also started exporting these 'Made in India' devices to other countries,' Kunwar said. 'India is not only our manufacturing hub but also the most important market for us from both a business perspective and a growth opportunity standpoint,' he added. Prachir Singh, a senior analyst with Counterpoint Research, told ETTelecom that HMD, including its Nokia-branded smartphones, has maintained a low market share in India, primarily due to a limited product lineup, weak channel engagement, and declining consumer recall. 'The brand hit a peak in Q2 2023. However, its share remained below 1%. HMD officially entered the Indian smartphone market under its own branding in Q3 2024 with the Crest and Crest Max series. However, these models struggled to gain traction amid intense competition and a crowded value segment,' Singh said. As a result, HMD presently has a marginal presence in India, with the brand 'significantly outpaced by more aggressive and better-positioned rivals', he added. Kunwar said that in the feature phone segment, the brand is currently 'number one in value and a close number two in volume', making this category a strong performer for the company in India.

Nokia hasn't made phones for years, but it isn't finished milking its name yet

Robert Triggs / Android Authority TL;DR Nokia has confirmed via Reddit that it's looking to team up with phone makers for licensing opportunities. The company was answering a question regarding future licensing deals for mobile phones. This also comes as HMD and Nokia's partnership draws to an end. HMD and Nokia have been winding down their brand licensing partnership in recent years. This deal saw HMD releasing smartphones and feature phones under the Finnish brand's name. Nokia has now taken to an unlikely avenue to confirm that it's still looking for new partners. The official Nokia Community Manager account confirmed on Reddit (via Mobilissimo) that the company is looking for a 'large scale mobile manufacturer' who wants to explore 'collaboration opportunities.' Check out the screenshot below. This is an interesting way for Nokia to reveal that it wants to license the Nokia brand to another phone maker. To be fair, the company was responding to a user query regarding brand licensing. This answer nevertheless suggests that Nokia hasn't found a new partner as the HMD deal winds down. Is it even worth licensing the Nokia name anymore? This news comes almost two years after HMD announced that it would make smartphones under its own name. However, the company still offers Nokia-branded feature phones. It's believed HMD's licensing deal with Nokia will expire in 2026. Do you think a new phone maker should license the Nokia name? 0 votes Yes, absolutely NaN % Maybe, it depends on the company NaN % No, this ship sailed a long time ago NaN % HMD acquired many Nokia-related patents as part of the deal, had many ex-Nokia employees, and released numerous modern takes on classic devices. The upstart company also released the ambitious but flawed Nokia 9 PureView flagship phone, but failed to follow up with more flagship phones. Instead, the company switched to mid-tier releases and repairable phones. More recently, the company announced it will exit the US, citing the 'challenging geopolitical and economic environment.' Despite HMD's challenges, I'm not sure any other brand can do much better with the Nokia name. A larger company might be able to release more cutting-edge Nokia-branded flagships and offer more marketing and R&D resources. However, HMD still fell short despite its unique aforementioned advantages. Furthermore, I'm guessing the Nokia brand has significantly waned among younger users. That means you probably shouldn't hold your breath for the Nokia name to challenge Samsung, Apple, and others again. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ .
