Trainspotting cast now from Star Wars to Line of Duty and unrecognisable huge US role
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The revolutionary film is one of the most renowned movies to ever emerge from Scotland, making a significant impact on the cinema scene in 1996. From the memorable 'choose life' slogan to the notorious toilet cubicle scene, the antics of Mark Renton and his group of heroin addicts in Edinburgh have become cinematic legend. However, nearly three decades later, many of the cast members have achieved astronomical success. Since Trainspotting's debut almost 30 years ago, the cast have embarked on major projects. From a short-lived marriage to Angelina Jolie to a role in Harry Potter, and even a standout appearance in Star Wars, the film propelled the group into substantial Hollywood success, reports the Daily Record. Here's what has happened to the Trainspotting cast since the film's release: Mark Renton - Ewan McGregor (Image: Getty Images) The film features Ewan McGregor as the charismatic and conflicted Mark Renton, who struggles with his heroin addiction and multiple attempts at sobriety. Ewan was already a familiar face for British viewers, having starred in the Danny Boyle film Shallow Grave and Channel 4's Lipstick on Your Collar - but after Trainspotting, Ewan would achieve a whole new level of international fame. Continuing his rapid ascent, the Scottish actor landed a massive role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels and also gained an even larger following for his roles in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge!, Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down and Disney's Winnie the Pooh reboot Christopher Robin. Daniel "Spud" Murphy - Ewan Bremner (Image: Christie Goodwin/Redferns) Ewan Bremner, the Edinburgh-native better known as Daniel "Spud" Murphy, had only a few acting gigs before his breakout Trainspotting role. He soared to fame in the early 2000s, starring alongside Ewan McGregor in Black Hawk Down and sharing the screen with Hollywood stars Ben Affleck and Kate Beckinsale in Pearl Harbour. Spud's return in Trainspotting T2 saw Ewan delivering an unforgettable performance, depicting a man still ensnared by heroin addiction. Simon "Sick Boy" Williamson - Jonny Lee Miller (Image: Daily Record) Jonny Lee Miller, who garnered attention as Simon "Sick Boy" Williamson, had already made waves with the film Hackers. His off-screen life was no less dramatic; after a whirlwind romance with Angelina Jolie, sparked on the Hackers set, the couple wed swiftly but parted ways two years later, in September 1997. Beyond the tabloids, Jonny worked with Val Kilmer in Mind Hunters, made regular appearances in the series Dexter, and portrayed Sherlock Holmes in Elementary. The Crown fans might also spot him as John Major, a characterisation the real Major quipped was "a barrel-load of nonsense". Kelly Macdonald captured hearts as Diane Coulston (Image: BBC/World Productions/ Steffan Hill) Kelly Macdonald was a mere 19 when she bagged her first role as Diane, after spotting an audition leaflet while working in a pub. Trainspotting set her on the path to a successful career, including a lead role alongside Billy Connolly as Merida in Pixar's Brave. She also earned credits in the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men and a part in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. More recently, viewers will recognise her as DCI Joanna Davidson from the popular BBC drama Line of Duty. Begbie - Robert Carlyle (Image: PA) Robert Carlyle, known for his role as Begbie in Trainspotting, has become a familiar face on big shows such as Cobra, The War of the Worlds, and Once Upon a Time. He reunited with Danny Boyle for Trainspotting T2 and played John Lennon in Boyle's Beatles film Yesterday. Tommy - Kevin McKidd (Image: Mitch Haaseth/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Image) Kevin McKidd, who portrayed Tommy in Trainspotting and Father Deegan in a Father Ted Christmas special, is now best known for his role as Owen Hunt in Grey's Anatomy. However, he continues to work in films, appearing alongside Kelly Macdonald in Brave and as Poseidon in the Percy Jackson films.

VMware Hacked As $150,000 Zero-Day Exploit Dropped
Pwn2Own hackers use $150,000 exploit on VMware ESXi. The elite hackers attending Pwn2Own in Berlin have made hacking history by successfully deploying a zero-day exploit against VMware ESXi. Having already made the headlines with no less than three zero-days compromising Windows 11 on day one of the hacking competition, day two kept the security surprises well and truly coming. Here's what you need to know. Organizations have had a lot to digest regarding enterprise technology security issues over the last few weeks. What with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency urging them to ensure they are protected against a high-severity Chrome vulnerability already being exploited in the wild, HTTPBot attackers targeting business Windows networks, and Microsoft confirming a critical 10/10 cloud security vulnerability. You might think that the news of VMware ESXi being hacked using a $150,000 zero-day exploit is the icing on the security nightmare cake, but you couldn't be more wrong. Context is everything, and the context here is the environment in which that zero-day was dropped. Pwn2Own is a twice-yearly hackathon where some of the world's leading hackers come together in friendly competition to see who can hack products and services, within strict time limits, using never-before-seen zero-day exploits, and earn the title Master of PWN. The good news is that this is all above board and legal. Remember that hacking is not a crime, folks, and the products and services being hacked have been submitted by the vendors for the purposes of discovering vulnerabilities before cybercriminals do. In the case of the VMware ESXi zero-day exploit, this was the first time in Pwn2Own's history, stretching back to 2007, that the hypervisor has been successfully exploited. The hacker behind the achievement, Nguyen Hoang Thach, who is part of the STARLabs SG team, was able to deploy a single integer overflow exploit. This earned them a not-too-shabby reward of $150,000 on the spot, as well as 15 valuable points towards the coveted Master of PWN title. I have reached out to Broadcom for a statement regarding the VMware ESXi zero-day at Pwn2Own, and will update this article should one be available.

US school districts facing extortion attempt after hack, software provider says
DETROIT, May 7 (Reuters) - Hackers have tried to extort "multiple" school districts in the United States using previously stolen data from education software and cloud provider PowerSchool, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. The California-based provider, which serves more than 60 million students globally, disclosed in December 2024 that personal information from its U.S. student information database had been stolen in a cybersecurity incident. The data stolen varied, the company said at the time, opens new tab, but could have included names, contact information, dates of birth, limited medical alert information, and social security numbers. In an update on Wednesday the company said it was "aware that a threat actor has reached out to multiple school district customers in an attempt to extort them," and for the first time acknowledged that the company paid a ransom for an undisclosed amount to the hackers responsible for the breach. The extortion attempts relied on data stolen as part of that incident, the company said. The company made what it called "the difficult decision" to pay the ransom "because we believed it to be in the best interest of our customers and the students and communities we serve." The company believed the hackers would delete the data, the company said, "based on assurances and evidence provided to us." Reuters could not establish whether the same hackers behind the original attack were behind the extortion tries. A person familiar with the extortion attempts told Reuters four school districts had been contacted. It was not clear where those districts are located. PowerSchool did not respond to a request for comment. Bain Capital took PowerSchool private in a deal worth $5.6 billion in June 2024.

Anonymous Hacks Airline Used In Trump El Salvador Deportations
Anonymous hackers claim attack against GlobalX airlines. NurPhoto via Getty Images Although it has been some years since the infamous hacker collective Anonymous made headlines, its status as a movement rather than an organized group means there is always the potential for it to pop up occasionally. And pop up it has. Under the banner of Operation DreadNought, which I assume is a nod to the battleship rather than the acoustic guitar, Anonymous has laid claim to defacing the website of a charter airline that has been used by the Trump administration to deport people to El Salvador. Beyond the defacement, Anonymous also claims to have stolen flight records and passenger manifests that include details of deportees. Here's what we know so far. Forbes Warning — 19 Billion Compromised Passwords Have Been Published Online By Davey Winder Cybercriminal groups have started to use Trump-related baits, such as fears about tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration, in phishing attacks. But concerted hacking attacks targeting organizations associated with the Trump administration have been few and far between. Password compromise, credit card theft, and retail ransomware attacks dominate the cybercrime news agenda. But what about the political activist hacking agenda? Hackers claiming to represent the Anonymous collective have reached out to a number of journalists with details of a web defacement attack against GlobalX, a charter airline that has been linked to flights to El Salvador as part of President Trump's deportation efforts. The May 5 defacement included the famous V for Vendetta mask, this time wrapped in the colours of the American flag, alongside a statement berating Trump's 'fascist plans.' The defacement can still be seen using the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. Mostly containing words from a recent ruling by U.S. District Judge Fernandez Rodriguez regarding the invocation of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, the statement was topped with a trolling 'You lose again Donnie' and tailed with a 'Made with Love by Anonymous Operations' credit. Anoynmous GlobalX website defacement. Davey Winder However, Anonymous also claims to have stolen flight records and passenger manifests, which include details of the deportation flights and passengers. Investigative journalist, Joseph Cox at 404 Media, said that he 'cross-checked known information about ICE deportation flights that come from official and confirmable sources with information contained on the flight manifests and flight details obtained by the hacker,' and information about the deportation flight of Kilmar Abrego Garcia was confirmed. I have reached out to GlobalX Airlines for a statement. The Operation DreadNought Anonymous campaign has previously claimed responsibility for attacks against Elon Musk's X social network platform. 080 Barcelona Fashion reaffirms its role as Spain's premier international fashion platform
From April 1 to 4, the Recinto Modernista de Sant Pau hosted the 35th edition of the biannual fashion event. This latest spring edition of the runway shows, organized by the 080 Barcelona Fashion platform, was defined by a diverse roster of brands—featuring both established names from the local scene and emerging national talents—as well as the announcement of Barcelona City Council's forthcoming investment in the event. Over four days, more than 3,000 attendees gathered at the iconic Barcelona venue to experience the collections of 24 brands and designers, carefully selected based on their creative vision and commercial potential. The event's goal, as outlined by 080's director Marta Coca in an interview with was clear: to strengthen the platform's international projection and foster an organically built fashion community. This latest spring edition signals a continued effort to position Barcelona as a global hub for cutting-edge, contemporary design—a mission that has guided the organisation over the past few seasons. 'There was a time when many brands left Barcelona to show elsewhere, which meant the city had lost relevance for them,' Coca admitted. 'Now, many have returned, and we hope they stay for the long haul.' The week kicked off with a lineup of more classic, refined proposals, including Simorra's Japanese-inspired silhouettes, The Label Edition's timeless rock attitude, Eikō ai's effortless chic, Escorpion's Scottish-influenced looks, and Lola Casademunt by Maite's nostalgic journey to the beaches of Normandy. Day two focused on bold, creative voices, led by Guillermo Justicia, winner of the top prize at the Rec.0 festival in collaboration with 080. The day continued with Compte Spain's reinterpretations of everyday objects, 404 Studio's capsule inspired by the film Hackers, Custo Barcelona's free-spirited aesthetic, Txell Miras 's sculptural fabric play, and Ernesto Naranjo's take on Ziegfeld Follies through a modern lens. On day three, emerging talent and innovation took center stage. AAA Studio opened with a raw exploration of Gen Z's exhaustion in the face of adulthood, followed by Alvar Merino's functional urbanwear, Doblas's artistic tailoring, Juan Vidal's exploration of vulnerability and duality, and Eñaut's reflection on beauty standards and personal perception. The day culminated with two high-impact shows: María Escoté 's capsule in collaboration with Warner Bros., Discovery Global Consumer Products, featuring playful nods to Superman, and Dominnico's mash-up of Western references and after-dark glamour. A pivotal investment from the city of Barcelona A major announcement came on the third day when Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni and Minister of Business and Employment Miquel Sàmper confirmed the City Council's new financial involvement. Until now, 080 had operated on a €2 million budget supported by the Catalan government and private sponsors. This fresh investment coincides with both institutions—local and regional—being led by the same political party (PSC) for the first time in years. According to Coca, the funding will be 'vital,' particularly for securing a new venue from 2026 onward. The 35th edition concluded with a showcase of more experimental and emotionally charged collections. Kicking off the final day was Anel Yaos, who presented a poignant collection inspired by his sister, followed by Maison Moonsieur's futuristic reinterpretation of 1920s femininity. Rubearth brought a vibrant menswear collection that blended design, art, and technology with an imaginative spirit. The day wrapped with standout presentations from ManéMané, whose defiant collection explored themes of freedom; Habey Club, offering a poetic narrative inspired by the life and work of photographer Vivian Maier; and Acromatyx, which delivered a timeless black capsule evoking the cultural heritage of Extremadura. While the upcoming autumn edition will remain at the UNESCO -listed modernist former hospital, 080 Barcelona Fashion plans to relocate to a new venue starting in 2026. The move responds to the growing space demands brought on by the event's steady expansion in recent seasons and will be made possible thanks to the newly announced investment from the Barcelona City Council. Although the exact location has yet to be revealed, Marta Coca noted that the team is searching for a strategic, iconic space in the city—whether modernist or brutalist in style, with neutral interior spaces—where the event could be held for at least three to four consecutive years.
